Bethany Demanded Counseling, But Larry Said NO
It was already late at night. Most of the lights in the house were off, but the light in Larry and Bethany’s room was still on.
Larry sat quietly in the corner of the couch. His exhausted expression made it obvious that he was mentally drained. Bethany had been watching him for a while, waiting for the right moment to speak.
Finally, she took a deep breath.
“Larry, I’ve made a decision.”
Larry looked up.
“What decision?”
Bethany confidently replied, “We’re going to marriage counseling.”
Larry remained silent for a few seconds before slowly shaking his head.
“No.”
Bethany could hardly believe it.
“What do you mean, no?”
“I mean exactly that. I’m not going to counseling.”
Larry Reminded Her About The Divorce Warning
Bethany immediately argued that they needed to do something to save their marriage.
Larry calmly told her that he had already explained that he did not want counseling at this point.
“Then what do you want?” Bethany asked.
Larry took a long breath.
“I’ve already given you my answer.”
Bethany disagreed, reminding him that whenever she asked for a decision, he always said, “I’ll think about it.”
Larry looked directly at her.
“And have you ever considered that maybe ‘I’ll think about it’ is an answer too?”
Bethany suddenly remembered Larry’s previous warnings. He had told her that he had endured too much and had even mentioned that he might seriously consider divorce if things continued the same way.
Bethany had always assumed those words were spoken out of anger.
But tonight, Larry wasn’t angry.
He was simply exhausted.
The Argument They Never Really Solved
Bethany asked why Larry kept bringing up divorce.
Larry explained that he had tried many times to make her understand how he felt.
He reminded her that after every argument, they would wake up the next morning and act as if nothing had happened.
“We argue at night. We get upset with each other. Then the next morning, we act like nothing happened. But the problem is still there.”
Bethany quietly asked what he wanted her to do.
Larry gave her a simple answer.
“First, I want you to listen to me.”
The room fell silent again.
The Next Morning Looked Completely Normal
The next morning, sunlight filled the house. Everything appeared strangely peaceful, almost as if the previous night’s argument had never happened.
Bethany prepared breakfast while Larry came downstairs.
They looked at each other, but neither said much.
Bethany eventually asked, “Want some coffee?”
Larry nodded.
“Yeah.”
There was no argument and no complaint. Yet both of them were still thinking about everything that had happened the night before.
Bethany eventually brought up counseling again.
“Larry… think about the counseling again.”
Larry placed his cup on the table.
“Bethany, I’ve already given you my answer.”
This time, Bethany wasn’t angry.
She looked afraid.
For the first time, she was beginning to realize that Larry’s silence wasn’t simply temporary frustration.
One Phone Call Made Everything More Serious
Suddenly, Larry’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen, and his expression immediately changed.
Bethany asked, “Who is it?”
Larry answered, “It’s my attorney.”
Bethany became serious.
“Your attorney? This early?”
Larry didn’t answer. He stepped outside the room to take the call.
Bethany stood there, wondering what the call could mean.
Was Larry really about to take the next step toward divorce?
A few minutes later, Larry returned.
Bethany immediately asked, “What did they say?”
Larry looked at her.
“There are some things I need to make a decision about.”
“About what?”
Larry remained silent for a moment.
Then he finally said,
“Our marriage.”
Bethany’s eyes widened.
Suddenly, everything from the previous night came rushing back.
Larry had never clearly told her that he had divorce papers in his hands.
But perhaps he had been giving her warning signs for a long time.
And Bethany simply hadn’t wanted to hear them.
Larry turned toward the door.
Bethany called after him.
“Larry!”
He stopped.
She quietly asked,
“Have we really come this far apart?”
Larry stood silently for a few moments before answering.
“Maybe we got here a long time ago… We just never wanted to admit it.”
He walked away.
Bethany remained standing there.
The house looked exactly the same as before, but something had changed.
For the first time, Bethany realized that the argument from the previous night wasn’t really over.
It was only waiting for the next chapter.
And this time, the decision might not be about counseling at all…
It might be about the future of their entire marriage.
