THE DIVORCE DECISION
SCENE 1 — BETHANY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — EVENING
The house is unusually quiet.
Warm evening light filters through the windows, but the atmosphere feels cold.
BETHANY’S DAD sits on the couch, looking worried. He notices the sound of the front door opening.
LARRY walks inside.
His face is serious.
He slowly approaches the living room.
Bethany’s dad looks up.
BETHANY’S DAD
Larry… what happened?
Larry remains silent for a moment.
He looks down, struggling to find the right words.
Finally, he takes a deep breath.
LARRY
I came here because I need to talk to you about Bethany.
Bethany’s dad immediately becomes concerned.
BETHANY’S DAD
Is Bethany okay?
Larry shakes his head slightly.
LARRY
I don’t know how to say this.
He pauses.
His eyes become emotional.
LARRY
Your daughter can’t become a mother.
Bethany’s dad stares at him in shock.
The words hit him hard.
BETHANY’S DAD
What are you saying?
Larry takes a step closer.
LARRY
I’m saying that Bethany can’t give me the family I wanted.
Bethany’s dad slowly stands.
His expression changes from confusion to anger and sadness.
BETHANY’S DAD
Larry, Bethany is my daughter.
LARRY
I know.
BETHANY’S DAD
Then don’t talk about her like she’s something you can simply throw away.
Larry looks away.
For a moment, neither man speaks.
SCENE 2 — THE PAINFUL CONFESSION
Larry walks toward the window.
He stares outside.
His voice becomes quieter.
LARRY
I never imagined my marriage would end like this.
Bethany’s dad watches him carefully.
BETHANY’S DAD
Then don’t let it end.
Larry turns around.
LARRY
I’ve made my decision.
Bethany’s dad freezes.
BETHANY’S DAD
What decision?
Larry looks directly at him.
LARRY
I’m going to divorce Bethany.
Silence fills the room.
Bethany’s dad slowly sits back down.
His hands tremble.
BETHANY’S DAD

Larry doesn’t respond.
BETHANY’S DAD
Please don’t do this to my daughter.
Larry looks uncomfortable.
BETHANY’S DAD
She loves you.
LARRY
Love isn’t fixing everything anymore.
Bethany’s dad wipes his eyes.
He struggles to remain composed.
BETHANY’S DAD
I know things haven’t been easy between you two.
He takes a breath.
BETHANY’S DAD
But Bethany is still your wife.
Larry looks down.
LARRY
And I’m tired of pretending everything is okay.
SCENE 3 — A FATHER’S PLEA
Bethany’s dad stands and walks toward Larry.
His anger has disappeared.
Now there is only desperation.
BETHANY’S DAD
Larry, I’m asking you as her father.
Larry looks at him.
BETHANY’S DAD
Please don’t leave her.
Larry remains silent.
Bethany’s dad lowers his voice.
BETHANY’S DAD
If I have done something wrong, forgive me.
Larry shakes his head.
LARRY
This isn’t about you.
BETHANY’S DAD
Then what can I do?
Larry doesn’t answer.
Bethany’s dad takes another step toward him.
BETHANY’S DAD
Tell me what you want.
Larry looks surprised.
BETHANY’S DAD
Whatever you ask for, I’m willing to do it.
Larry stares at him.
LARRY
You can’t buy your daughter’s marriage back.
BETHANY’S DAD
I’m not trying to buy anything.
His voice cracks.
BETHANY’S DAD
I’m trying to save my daughter from losing the person she loves.
Larry looks away.
SCENE 4 — LARRY’S ANGER
Larry’s frustration begins to rise.
LARRY
You don’t understand what I’ve been dealing with.
Bethany’s dad remains calm.
BETHANY’S DAD
Then tell me.
LARRY
I’ve tried.
BETHANY’S DAD
Try again.
Larry shakes his head.
LARRY
Every time I try to talk to Bethany, we end up fighting.
BETHANY’S DAD
Marriage has difficult moments.
LARRY
This is more than a difficult moment.
Larry’s voice becomes emotional.
LARRY
I’ve been carrying this pain for a long time.
Bethany’s dad looks at him with sympathy.
BETHANY’S DAD
And you think divorce will make that pain disappear?
Larry doesn’t answer.
BETHANY’S DAD
It won’t.
Larry looks back at him.
BETHANY’S DAD
You’ll still remember her.
Larry’s expression softens.
SCENE 5 — THE OFFER
Bethany’s dad takes a deep breath.
He looks Larry directly in the eyes.
BETHANY’S DAD
Listen to me.
Larry waits.
BETHANY’S DAD
I’m sorry.
Larry looks surprised by the apology.
LARRY
You don’t have to apologize.
BETHANY’S DAD
Yes, I do.
He pauses.
BETHANY’S DAD
If I ever made you feel like you weren’t good enough for my daughter, I’m sorry.
Larry says nothing.
BETHANY’S DAD
If I ever judged you, I’m sorry for that too.
A tear rolls down his cheek.
BETHANY’S DAD
Just don’t punish Bethany for everything that happened between you and me.
Larry looks deeply conflicted.
LARRY
I never wanted to hurt her.
BETHANY’S DAD
Then don’t.
SCENE 6 — ONE LAST CHANCE
Bethany’s dad sits down again.
He looks exhausted.
BETHANY’S DAD
Give her one more chance.
Larry remains standing.
LARRY
And if nothing changes?
BETHANY’S DAD
Then you’ll make your own decision.
Larry considers his words.
BETHANY’S DAD
But don’t walk away today.
Larry slowly sits across from him.
For the first time, his anger begins to disappear.
LARRY
I don’t know if I can stay.
BETHANY’S DAD
You don’t have to promise forever.
He looks at Larry.
BETHANY’S DAD
Just promise you won’t make a decision while you’re angry.
Larry looks down.
The room becomes silent again.
SCENE 7 — THE FINAL QUESTION
Larry finally looks up.
LARRY
You really mean it?
BETHANY’S DAD
Yes.
LARRY
You’d really do whatever you can to help?
Bethany’s dad nods.
BETHANY’S DAD
For my daughter, yes.
Larry takes a slow breath.
LARRY
I don’t want money.
Bethany’s dad looks confused.
LARRY
I don’t want anything from you.
He pauses.
LARRY
I just want Bethany to understand how much this marriage has hurt me.
Bethany’s dad nods slowly.
BETHANY’S DAD
Then talk to her.
LARRY
What if she doesn’t listen?
BETHANY’S DAD
Then keep trying until she does.
Larry looks toward the hallway.
His expression is filled with uncertainty.
SCENE 8 — BETHANY OVERHEARS
Neither man notices BETHANY standing quietly near the hallway.
She has heard everything.
Her eyes fill with tears.
Larry turns toward the hallway.
He suddenly notices her.
Their eyes meet.
Bethany doesn’t say a word.
Larry stands.
LARRY
Bethany…
She wipes away a tear.
BETHANY
You came here to divorce me?
Larry struggles to answer.
LARRY
I was angry.
Bethany looks at her father.
Then back at Larry.
BETHANY
And Dad had to beg you to stay?
Bethany’s dad stands.
BETHANY’S DAD
Bethany, please—
She raises her hand gently.
BETHANY
No, Dad.
She looks at Larry.
BETHANY
I need to hear what he has to say.
Larry takes a step toward her.
The room falls silent.
For the first time, all three realize that the decision about their marriage cannot be made by anger, money, or desperation.
It has to be made by the two people who are still standing in the middle of it.
