WHEN AMBER FINDS DAVE WITH EVELYN
SCENE 1 — EXT. CITY CAFÉ — LATE AFTERNOON
The sun hangs low over the busy street.
Outside a stylish café, people move along the sidewalk as cars pass in the distance.
Inside the café, Dave sits across from Evelyn at a quiet table near the window.
Neither of them notices Amber walking down the street.
DAVE
I’m glad we finally had a chance to sit down and talk.
Evelyn smiles politely.
EVELYN
Me too. It feels like we haven’t had a real conversation in a long time.
Dave nods. He seems completely relaxed.
DAVE
There’s been a lot going on lately. Sometimes you just need to step away from everything.
Evelyn looks toward the window.
EVELYN
That’s exactly what I was thinking.
Dave reaches for his coffee.
DAVE
Actually, I wanted to ask you something.
Evelyn looks back at him.
EVELYN
What?
Dave smiles.
DAVE
Would you like to go out with me sometime? Just dinner. Somewhere nice where we can actually talk.
Evelyn pauses for a moment.
EVELYN
A date?
Dave nods.
DAVE
Yeah. A date.
Evelyn smiles.
EVELYN
Okay. I’d like that.
Dave smiles back.
Neither of them realizes that someone has stopped outside the café.
SCENE 2 — EXT. CITY CAFÉ — CONTINUOUS
Amber stands across the street.
She freezes when she sees Dave sitting with Evelyn.
Her expression immediately changes.
The surprise on her face turns into jealousy and anger.
Amber watches through the café window.
Dave and Evelyn continue talking.
Amber clenches her hands.
AMBER
Dave?
Her voice is quiet, almost disbelieving.
She takes another look.
Dave is smiling.
Evelyn is smiling too.
Amber’s frustration grows.
AMBER
So this is what he’s doing?
She takes a deep breath.
Instead of walking away, Amber crosses the street.
Her footsteps become faster.
She pushes open the café door.
SCENE 3 — INT. CITY CAFÉ — CONTINUOUS
The door opens.
Dave doesn’t notice.
Evelyn looks toward the entrance.
Amber walks toward their table.
Her expression is serious.
Dave continues talking, completely unaware of what is about to happen.
DAVE
I was thinking maybe Friday night—
He suddenly notices Amber standing beside the table.
DAVE
Amber?
Evelyn looks from Dave to Amber.
Amber stares directly at Dave.
AMBER
So this is where you are?
DAVE
What are you doing here?
Amber looks at Evelyn. Then back at Dave.
AMBER
I could ask you the same thing.
Dave sits back.
DAVE
Amber, calm down.
AMBER
Don’t tell me to calm down.
Evelyn remains quiet, sensing the tension.
DAVE
Nothing is happening.
AMBER
Nothing?
She gestures toward Evelyn.
AMBER
You’re sitting here with her, talking for who knows how long, and now you’re planning a date?
Dave realizes Amber must have heard the conversation.
DAVE
You heard that?
AMBER
I heard enough.
Dave looks uncomfortable.
SCENE 4 — INT. CITY CAFÉ — MOMENTS LATER
Amber pulls out a chair but doesn’t sit.
She remains standing beside the table.
AMBER
How long have you two been sitting here?
Dave looks at Evelyn.
DAVE
We’ve just been talking.
Amber’s eyes narrow.
AMBER
That doesn’t answer my question.
EVELYN
Amber, we were just having a conversation.
Amber looks at her.
AMBER
I wasn’t talking to you.
Evelyn pauses.
Dave raises his hand slightly.
DAVE
Okay. Let’s not turn this into an argument.
AMBER
You should have thought about that before asking her out.
DAVE
Amber, I didn’t know you were going to show up.
AMBER
Exactly.
Dave looks confused.
AMBER
You didn’t know I was going to see you.
Dave doesn’t respond.
Amber’s words hit him.
SCENE 5 — INT. CITY CAFÉ — CONTINUOUS
The atmosphere around the table becomes tense.
Evelyn slowly gathers her things.
EVELYN
Maybe I should give you two some space.
DAVE
Evelyn—
AMBER
No. She doesn’t have to leave because of me.
Amber looks at Dave.
AMBER
You invited her here. You asked her on a date. You can explain it.
Dave leans forward.
DAVE
I didn’t do anything wrong.
AMBER
You don’t think this looks bad?
DAVE
No. Because I’m not hiding anything.
AMBER
You weren’t hiding anything because you didn’t know I was watching.
Dave becomes quiet.
For the first time, he realizes how Amber discovered them.
DAVE
Were you following me?
AMBER
No.
Amber pauses.
AMBER
I found out you were here.
Dave studies her expression.
DAVE
And then you came straight over?
AMBER
Yes.
SCENE 6 — EXT. CITY CAFÉ — EVENING
Dave and Amber step outside.
Evelyn remains inside for a moment, watching them through the window.
The city lights begin to glow.
Amber turns toward Dave.
AMBER
Why did you ask Evelyn out?
Dave takes a breath.
DAVE
Because I wanted to spend some time with her.
AMBER
So you actually planned this?
DAVE
Yes.
Amber’s expression becomes more emotional.
AMBER
And you didn’t think I would have a problem with it?
DAVE
Amber, I can’t make every decision based on how you might react.
Amber looks at him.
She doesn’t immediately answer.
DAVE
We need to be honest with each other. If something bothers you, tell me. Don’t just appear out of nowhere and assume the worst.
AMBER
Maybe I wouldn’t have assumed the worst if I knew what was happening.
DAVE
Then maybe that’s the real problem.
Amber’s expression changes.
SCENE 7 — EXT. CITY CAFÉ — MOMENTS LATER
Evelyn steps outside.
She approaches carefully.
EVELYN
Dave, I’ll head home.
DAVE
I’ll call you later.
Amber hears this.
Her jealousy returns immediately.
She looks toward Evelyn.
AMBER
You two are still planning to go on that date?
EVELYN
Dave asked me. I said yes.
Amber looks at Dave.
Dave doesn’t deny it.
DAVE
That’s right.
Amber takes a slow breath.
AMBER
Fine.
She turns away.
Dave watches her.
DAVE
Amber—
Amber stops.
She looks back.
AMBER
What?
Dave struggles to find the right words.
DAVE
I didn’t want you to find out like this.
Amber gives him a disappointed look.
AMBER
But I did.
She walks away.
Dave remains standing outside the café.
Evelyn watches Amber disappear down the sidewalk.
SCENE 8 — EXT. CITY STREET — NIGHT
Amber walks alone beneath the streetlights.
Her anger is still obvious.
She pulls out her phone but doesn’t call anyone.
She looks back toward the café.
Through the window, she can see Dave and Evelyn talking one more time.
AMBER
I can’t believe this.
She puts her phone away.
Meanwhile, outside the café, Dave watches Amber disappear into the crowd.
He looks conflicted.
DAVE
I didn’t know she’d take it this way.
EVELYN
Maybe she cares more than she wants to admit.
Dave doesn’t answer.
He looks down the street.
Amber is already gone.
The tension between all three of them has only just begun.
SCENE 9 — EXT. CITY STREET — NIGHT
Amber continues walking.
Her expression slowly changes from anger to determination.
She stops beneath a streetlight.
She looks back one final time.
AMBER
If Dave thinks I’m just going to ignore this, he’s wrong.
She turns and continues walking.
Behind her, the city remains alive with traffic and lights.
But for Amber, everything has suddenly changed.
