Bethany sat quietly in her parents’ living room, her hands folded tightly in her lap.
Her mother and father could immediately tell that something was troubling her.
Her mother moved closer.

What’s going on?”

“No. I asked Larry to go to counseling with me.”

“And what did he say?”

“He refused. He said counseling wouldn’t change anything
and that we should deal with our problems ourselves.”
Her father sighed.
Dad:
“And how did that make you feel?”
Bethany’s eyes filled with tears.

“Honestly?
Heartbroken.”

“I kept thinking that if I stayed patient, things would get better.

“Do you still want to save the marriage?”
Bethany remained silent for several seconds.

“What are you saying?”

“I want a divorce.”

Mom:

“I’ve thought about it for a long time.

where I know I need a different future.”
Her father nodded slowly.
Dad:
“You need to make this decision carefully.
Don’t do it because you’re angry tonight.”
Bethany:
“I’m not angry, Dad. I’m hurt. There’s a difference.”
Her voice trembled.
Bethany:
“I wanted Larry to fight for us. I wanted him to say,
‘Let’s get help. Let’s fix this.’ Instead, he told me counseling wasn’t necessary.”
Her mother hugged her.
Mom:
“You deserve to feel heard and respected.”
Bethany:
“I want to move forward. I want to become confident again.
I want to build a life where I’m not constantly waiting for someone else
to decide whether our relationship is worth saving.”

Lawyer:
“Absolutely. We’ll go through everything carefully
before you make any final decisions.”
Bethany:
“Thank you. That’s exactly what I want.”
She ended the call and stared at the phone.
For the first time, she felt that she was taking control of her future.

“So that’s it? You’re just giving up?”
Bethany’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t give up overnight.
I spent months trying to make things work.”
Larry looked away.

“I never wanted to lose you.”

“Then I wish you had shown me that when I was asking you to fight for us.”

Larry looked at her again.

“Is there someone else?”
Bethany shook her head.

“No. This isn’t about another person.
It’s about me realizing that I need to move forward with my life.”

of partnership I want. But right now, I need to focus on myself and my future.”
Larry lowered his eyes.

“I don’t know what to say.”
Bethany:
“You don’t have to say anything tonight.”
She picked up her bag.

“I just want us to handle this respectfully.”
Larry watched her walk away.
