Scene 1 — Outside Dave’s House
Evening settles over the quiet neighborhood. Amber walks toward Dave’s house, holding her phone in one hand. She looks calm, but there is a little concern in her expression. She reaches the front door and pauses.
AMBER: Dave? Are you home?
There is no answer. Amber knocks again.
AMBER: Dave, it’s me.
Still nothing. She slowly tries the door. It opens. Amber steps inside.
Scene 2 — The Living Room
The house is unusually quiet. Amber takes a few steps forward.
AMBER: Dave?
She hears voices coming from the living room. Amber stops. She looks toward the room. Dave is standing there with his ex. They are clearly sharing a private moment together. Amber freezes. Her expression changes instantly. She never expected to see Dave with his ex.
AMBER: Dave…?
Dave turns around. His face drops when he sees Amber standing in the doorway.
DAVE: Amber?
Dave’s ex also turns toward the door. For a few seconds, nobody says anything. The silence feels heavier than any argument.
Scene 3 — Amber’s Shock
Amber slowly steps farther into the room. She looks at Dave, then at his ex.
AMBER: What is going on here?
Dave struggles to find the right words.
DAVE: Amber, wait. It’s not what you think.
Amber shakes her head.
AMBER: I literally walked in and saw you two together.
Dave takes a step toward her.
DAVE: Please, just let me explain.
Amber raises her hand, stopping him.
AMBER: Explain what?
Dave becomes silent. His ex looks uncomfortable.
DAVE’S EX: Maybe I should leave.
AMBER: No. Stay.
She looks directly at Dave.
AMBER: I want to hear the truth from him.
Dave takes a deep breath.
Scene 4 — The Explanation
DAVE: She came over because we needed to talk about some things from the past.
Amber crosses her arms.
AMBER: And that explains what I just saw?
Dave looks down.
DAVE: No. It doesn’t.
Amber’s expression hardens.
AMBER: So you knew she was coming here?
DAVE: Yes.
AMBER: And you never told me?
DAVE: I didn’t know how to tell you.
Amber lets out a disappointed laugh.
AMBER: That’s your excuse?
Dave’s ex looks toward Dave.
DAVE’S EX: I didn’t come here to cause problems.
AMBER: Then why did you come?
Dave’s ex hesitates.
DAVE’S EX: We were trying to talk about our past and figure out where we stand.
Amber looks stunned.
AMBER: Where you stand?
She looks at Dave.
AMBER: Dave, do you still have feelings for her?
Dave remains quiet. Amber notices his hesitation. That silence tells her more than his words could.
Scene 5 — The Confrontation
Amber steps closer.
AMBER: You could have told me the truth.
DAVE: I was scared.
AMBER: Scared of what?
DAVE: Of hurting you.
Amber looks away for a moment.
AMBER: You already hurt me.
Dave’s expression changes.
DAVE: Amber, I’m sorry.
AMBER: Sorry doesn’t change what happened.
The room becomes quiet again. Dave’s ex slowly picks up her bag.
DAVE’S EX: I think I should go.
Amber doesn’t look at her.
AMBER: Maybe you should.
Dave’s ex walks toward the door. Before leaving, she turns back toward Dave.
DAVE’S EX: You need to figure out what you really want.
Dave says nothing. She walks out.
Scene 6 — Just Amber And Dave
The front door closes. Amber and Dave are now alone. Amber stands near the living room entrance.
DAVE: Amber, please.
AMBER: I came here because I wanted to see you.
Her voice is calmer now, but the disappointment is obvious.
AMBER: I thought we were okay.
DAVE: We are.
AMBER: Then why did you hide this from me?
Dave struggles to answer.
DAVE: I didn’t want to start another argument.
AMBER: You should have trusted me enough to tell me.
Dave nods slowly.
DAVE: You’re right.
Amber looks at him.
AMBER: Are you still in love with her?
Dave remains silent. Amber waits. Seconds pass. Finally, Dave looks up.
DAVE: I don’t know.
Amber’s eyes widen.
AMBER: That’s all I needed to hear.
She turns toward the door.
Scene 7 — Amber Walks Away
Dave quickly follows her.
DAVE: Amber, wait!
Amber stops but doesn’t turn around.
DAVE: Please don’t leave like this.
AMBER: How else am I supposed to leave?
She turns around.
AMBER: I came here expecting to see you. Instead, I walked into something I never thought I’d see.
DAVE: I never wanted you to find out this way.
AMBER: Then you should have told me before I had to find out.
Dave looks devastated.
DAVE: Can we talk about this?
AMBER: Not tonight.
Amber opens the door. Dave stands behind her.
DAVE: Amber…
She pauses.
AMBER: I need some time.
She steps outside. The door slowly closes behind her.
Scene 8 — Outside
Amber walks down the sidewalk. She stops for a moment and looks back at Dave’s house. Her expression is filled with disappointment and confusion. Inside the house, Dave remains standing near the doorway. He realizes that one hidden moment has changed everything. Amber continues walking. Dave watches helplessly as she disappears down the street.
FADE OUT — “I don’t know” was all it took. Sometimes the truth isn’t in the answer, it’s in how long it takes to come.
