WHEN TAMARA’S QUESTION LEAVES ANTHONY SPEECHLESS
SCENE 1 — OUTSIDE THE HOUSE
Late afternoon. The atmosphere is calm, but something feels off.
Anthony and Shayla sit outside the house, talking comfortably. Their conversation is relaxed, filled with smiles and occasional laughter.
SHAYLA
You know, Anthony, you’re actually easy to talk to when you’re not trying to act so serious.
Anthony smiles.
ANTHONY
Maybe because I don’t have to overthink everything when I’m talking to you.
SHAYLA
See? That’s exactly what I mean.
From a short distance away, Tamara notices the two of them. She watches their interaction carefully. Her expression changes.
TAMARA
Interesting…
Tamara walks away, already knowing exactly who she wants to tell.
SCENE 2 — TAMARA TELLS D’NISHA
Inside the house, D’Nisha is busy with something when Tamara walks in.
D’NISHA
What’s wrong?
TAMARA
I need to tell you something.
D’NISHA
Okay. What happened?
TAMARA
Anthony and Shayla were outside together.
D’NISHA
Together?
TAMARA
Yes. Just the two of them. Sitting outside, talking like they were completely comfortable with each other.
D’NISHA
What were they talking about?
TAMARA
I don’t know everything they said.
Tamara pauses.
TAMARA
But the way Anthony was acting around Shayla…
D’NISHA
What about the way he was acting?
TAMARA
He looked comfortable. Really comfortable.
D’Nisha takes a breath. She decides she wants an explanation directly from Anthony.
SCENE 3 — D’NISHA CONFRONTS ANTHONY
D’Nisha walks outside. Anthony and Shayla notice her approaching.
Anthony immediately sits up straighter.
ANTHONY
D’Nisha…
D’NISHA
So you and Shayla were out here together?
ANTHONY
Yeah, we were just talking.
D’NISHA
Just talking?
ANTHONY
Yes. Nothing was happening.
D’NISHA
Then answer me something.
D’NISHA: Why aren’t you this comfortable around me?
Silence. Anthony looks caught off guard.
ANTHONY
What do you mean?
D’NISHA
You’re sitting here laughing, talking, giving compliments, acting completely relaxed.
D’NISHA
But when you’re around me, everything feels different.
ANTHONY
That’s not fair. I’m comfortable with you too.
D’NISHA
Then why doesn’t it look that way?
Anthony struggles to find the right words.
SCENE 4 — TAMARA ADDS FUEL
Tamara steps outside. She can immediately feel the tension.
TAMARA
Well, I guess the question had to be asked eventually.
ANTHONY
Tamara, please don’t start.
TAMARA
I’m not starting anything. I’m just saying what everybody can see.
ANTHONY
You don’t know what happened.
TAMARA
I know what I saw.
Shayla slowly stands up.
SHAYLA
Why are you so concerned about me and Anthony?
TAMARA
Because I’m watching the situation.
SHAYLA
No. You’re watching me.
SHAYLA
You’re more worried about what Anthony and I are doing than I am.
TAMARA
Maybe because somebody needs to ask questions.
SHAYLA
You’re making this bigger than it is.
TAMARA
Am I?
The tension rises.
SCENE 5 — THE COMPLIMENT
D’NISHA
Anthony, did you compliment Shayla?
ANTHONY
I mean… we were talking.
D’NISHA
That wasn’t my question.
ANTHONY
Yes. I said something nice.
Shayla looks away. Tamara notices Anthony’s hesitation.
TAMARA
Okay. Then let’s make this simple.
Everyone looks at her.
TAMARA
Anthony, I have one question for you.
ANTHONY
What?
If D’Nisha were sitting right here when you and Shayla were talking…
Would you have given Shayla that same compliment?
Would you have given Shayla that same compliment?
Anthony freezes. D’Nisha watches him closely. Shayla’s eyes widen slightly. Tamara waits.
ANTHONY
I…
Anthony stops. He looks at D’Nisha. Then at Shayla. Then back at Tamara. No answer comes.
SCENE 6 — THE AWKWARD SILENCE
D’NISHA
Anthony?
ANTHONY
I don’t know how to answer that without making this worse.
D’NISHA
That answer already says something.
ANTHONY
No, it doesn’t.
D’NISHA
Then answer the question.
Anthony opens his mouth. Nothing comes out.
SHAYLA
Anthony, just tell the truth.
ANTHONY
I was just being nice.
TAMARA
Being nice isn’t the problem.
TAMARA
The problem is whether you would have acted the same way if D’Nisha had been sitting beside you.
Anthony looks down. D’Nisha’s face shows disappointment.
SCENE 7 — SHAYLA CHECKS TAMARA
SHAYLA
Tamara, you keep acting like you’re protecting D’Nisha.
SHAYLA
But why are you so invested in what Anthony and I are doing?
TAMARA
Because I don’t like seeing people get played.
SHAYLA
Nobody is playing anybody.
TAMARA
Then you shouldn’t have a problem with questions.
SHAYLA
I don’t.
Shayla steps closer.
SHAYLA
But you need to stop acting like my relationship with Anthony is your business.
TAMARA
Fine.
TAMARA
But she deserves honesty too.
D’Nisha looks at Anthony.
SCENE 8 — ANTHONY TRIES TO EXPLAIN
ANTHONY
D’Nisha, listen to me.
ANTHONY
I wasn’t trying to disrespect you. Shayla and I were just having a conversation.
D’NISHA
And the compliment?
ANTHONY
It meant nothing.
D’NISHA
Then why did you hesitate?
ANTHONY
Because everybody is putting me on the spot.
D’NISHA
Maybe because you put yourself in this situation.
ANTHONY
I can’t control how everything looks to everybody.
D’NISHA
No. But you can control what you say and how you act.
Anthony nods slowly.
SCENE 9 — THE FINAL LOOK
Tamara looks at Anthony. Shayla watches D’Nisha. D’Nisha remains focused on Anthony.
TAMARA
So… what’s the answer?
ANTHONY
I already told you. I was being friendly.
TAMARA
That’s not what I asked.
Anthony goes silent again.
D’Nisha slowly turns away. Shayla looks uncomfortable. Tamara gives Anthony a knowing look.
The question has exposed more tension than anyone expected.
D’NISHA
We’re going to talk about this later.
She walks away.
ANTHONY
D’Nisha, wait—
She keeps walking. Anthony looks frustrated. Shayla remains standing nearby. Tamara folds her arms.
TAMARA
Sometimes the hardest question is the one you already know the answer to.
Anthony looks at Tamara. His expression says everything.
CUT TO BLACK.
