The afternoon had started quietly at the café. The place was busy with customers sitting at tables, talking with friends, working on laptops, and waiting for their drinks. The smell of fresh coffee and pastries filled the room. Behind the counter, Brooke moved from one table to another, carrying drinks and taking orders.
Brooke was wearing a simple café uniform with an apron tied around her waist. She looked tired, but she continued working without complaining. She had been trying to manage everything on her own for some time. College had once been an option, but things had not gone according to plan.
Instead of continuing her education, Brooke had decided to start working and support herself. She was writing down another customer’s order when the café door suddenly opened. Brooke looked up, and her expression immediately changed. Larry walked inside.
For a moment, Brooke stood completely still. Larry looked around the café, and then his eyes landed on Brooke. He seemed surprised to see her there. He slowly walked toward her.
“Brooke?” he asked.
Brooke lowered her eyes.
“Larry… what are you doing here?”
Larry looked at her uniform and then at the tray in her hands.
“I could ask you the same thing.”
Brooke sighed.
“I work here.”
Larry was quiet for a moment.
“You work here?”
“Yes. I needed a job.”
Larry looked disappointed.
“Brooke, we talked about this.”
“I know,” she replied quietly.
“No, I don’t think you do,” Larry said.
Brooke looked around nervously. A few customers had started noticing the conversation. Larry lowered his voice and reminded her about the opportunities she once had.
“I know what you told me.”
“Then why didn’t you listen?”
Brooke looked directly at him.
“Because things weren’t that simple.”
Larry shook his head. He explained that life was never supposed to be simple and that he had only wanted to help her build something for herself.
Brooke told him that she had responsibilities and could not simply ignore everything while waiting for life to become easier.
Larry asked why she had given up. Brooke immediately corrected him.
“I didn’t give up.”
Larry looked at her.
“Then what do you call this?”
“I call it doing what I have to do right now.”
There was a long silence between them. Larry finally told Brooke that she had made her choice and needed to accept the responsibility that came with it.
Brooke’s eyes became emotional, but she tried not to show it. Larry made it clear that honest work did not make her less important. He simply wanted her to understand that she could not blame everyone else for where she was.
“I’m not blaming anyone.”
Larry nodded. He reminded her that this was her life and that she was responsible for what happened next.
“Your current situation doesn’t have to be your final destination.”
Those words stayed with Brooke. She looked down at her hands. Maybe Larry was right about one thing. She had made choices, and those choices had consequences. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t make new choices.
Larry stepped back.
“I just don’t want you to convince yourself that this is all you’re capable of.”
“And if I want something more?”
“Then work toward it.”
Before leaving, Larry looked back at Brooke.
“You’re responsible for your life, Brooke. But being responsible doesn’t mean you have to stop dreaming.”
Brooke watched him walk toward the door. For the first time in a long while, she didn’t feel ashamed of where she was.
Instead, she felt determined to decide where she would go next. Her future was still in her hands, and perhaps this was only the beginning of something new.
