THE SECRET MONEY
SCENE 1 — INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — LATE AFTERNOON
The house is quiet.
Anthony stands near the kitchen counter, checking his phone. He looks tense, as if he is waiting for someone.
A soft knock comes from the front door.
Anthony quickly looks toward the hallway before opening it.
Shayla stands outside.
She steps inside and closes the door behind her.
ANTHONY
“I told you to come when D’Nisha wasn’t around.”
Shayla looks at him carefully.
SHAYLA
“You said you were going to help me. I need the money today.”
Anthony sighs and reaches into his pocket.
He pulls out an envelope.
ANTHONY
“Here. But don’t tell D’Nisha about this.”
Shayla takes the envelope.
She looks down at it, then back at Anthony.
SHAYLA
“She doesn’t know?”
Anthony shakes his head.
ANTHONY
“No. And I want to keep it that way.”
Shayla gives him a small nod.
SHAYLA
“Fine. She won’t hear anything from me.”
Anthony watches as Shayla puts the envelope into her bag.
Neither of them notices D’Nisha approaching the hallway.
D’Nisha stops before entering the room.
She hears their voices but cannot clearly make out the conversation.
After a moment, she walks away.
Anthony looks toward the hallway.
His expression becomes uneasy.
SCENE 2 — INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — MOMENTS LATER
D’Nisha sits on the couch, looking through her phone.
Anthony enters the room.
He tries to act normal.
D’NISHA
“Who was at the door?”
Anthony pauses.
ANTHONY
“Just Shayla.”
D’Nisha studies his face.
D’NISHA
“What did she want?”
Anthony looks away for a moment.
ANTHONY
“Nothing serious. She just stopped by.”
D’Nisha nods slowly.
D’NISHA
“Okay.”
Anthony walks toward the kitchen.
D’Nisha watches him leave.
Something about his answer bothers her.
SCENE 3 — EXT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — EVENING
Shayla walks down the sidewalk with her bag over her shoulder.
She stops near her car.
A smile slowly appears on her face as she remembers the envelope.
She opens her bag and checks it.
Then she notices D’Nisha standing at the front door.
SHAYLA
“D’Nisha, there’s something you should know.”
D’Nisha becomes confused.
D’NISHA
“What?”
Shayla looks toward the house.
Then she lowers her voice.
SHAYLA
“Your husband gave me money.”
D’Nisha’s expression immediately changes.
D’NISHA
“What did you say?”
Shayla opens her bag slightly, showing the envelope.
SHAYLA
“Anthony gave this to me.”
D’Nisha stares at the envelope.
D’NISHA
“When?”
SHAYLA
“Just a few minutes ago.”
D’Nisha takes a step closer.
D’NISHA
“Why would Anthony give you money?”
Shayla shrugs.
SHAYLA
“I don’t know. You should ask him.”
D’Nisha looks toward the house.
Her face shows growing anger.
D’NISHA
“Did he tell you not to say anything to me?”
Shayla hesitates.
That hesitation says enough.
SHAYLA
“He did.”
D’Nisha’s eyes widen.
D’NISHA
“So he was hiding it from me?”
Shayla nods.
SHAYLA
“That’s what I’m telling you.”
D’Nisha turns toward the house.
Her anger is now impossible to hide.
SCENE 4 — INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS
Anthony is sitting on the couch when D’Nisha storms into the room.
He immediately looks up.
ANTHONY
“D’Nisha?”
She stands in front of him.
D’NISHA
“Why did you give Shayla money?”
Anthony freezes.
ANTHONY
“What are you talking about?”
D’Nisha folds her arms.
D’NISHA
“Don’t act like you don’t know.”
Anthony stands.
ANTHONY
“Let me explain.”
D’NISHA
“No. You explain right now.”
Anthony takes a breath.
ANTHONY
“She needed help.”
D’Nisha shakes her head.
D’NISHA
“And you couldn’t tell me?”
Anthony remains silent.
D’NISHA
“You gave her money behind my back and then came in here pretending nothing happened.”
ANTHONY
“I didn’t want an argument.”
D’Nisha looks at him in disbelief.
D’NISHA
“So hiding it was easier?”
ANTHONY
“I knew you might misunderstand.”
D’NISHA
“Misunderstand what? You gave another woman money without telling me!”
Anthony runs a hand over his face.
ANTHONY
“It wasn’t about anything like that.”
D’NISHA
“Then why hide it?”
Anthony has no immediate answer.
The room becomes silent.
SCENE 5 — INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — MOMENTS LATER
D’Nisha walks toward the window.
She takes a deep breath, trying to control her emotions.
Anthony remains several feet away.
ANTHONY
“I should have told you.”
D’Nisha turns around.
D’NISHA
“Yes. You should have.”
Anthony nods.
ANTHONY
“I made the wrong decision by keeping it from you.”
D’Nisha looks at him firmly.
D’NISHA
“And now Shayla knows she can come to you for money whenever she wants?”
ANTHONY
“That’s not what I said.”
D’NISHA
“But that’s what happened.”
Anthony takes another breath.
ANTHONY
“I was trying to solve a problem. I wasn’t trying to disrespect you.”
D’Nisha’s expression softens slightly, but she remains upset.
D’NISHA
“You need to understand something, Anthony. The money is one issue. The secret is another.”
Anthony listens.
D’NISHA
“If you had told me from the beginning, we could have talked about it. Instead, you decided I didn’t deserve to know.”
ANTHONY
“I understand.”
D’NISHA
“I don’t think you do.”
A long silence follows.
SCENE 6 — EXT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — NIGHT
Shayla sits inside her car.
Through the windshield, she can see the tension inside the house.
She watches quietly.
A phone in her hand begins to ring.
She looks at the screen but doesn’t answer.
Inside the house, D’Nisha and Anthony remain locked in a serious conversation.
Shayla smiles faintly.
SCENE 7 — INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — NIGHT
D’Nisha picks up her phone.
She looks at Anthony one final time.
D’NISHA
“I need some time to think about all of this.”
Anthony nods.
ANTHONY
“Okay.”
D’Nisha walks toward the hallway.
Before leaving, she turns back.
D’NISHA
“Next time, don’t let somebody else tell me what my own husband is doing.”
Anthony lowers his eyes.
D’Nisha walks away.
Anthony remains alone in the living room.
He looks toward the door, realizing that a simple decision to help Shayla has created a much bigger problem.
Outside, Shayla starts her car and drives away.
The night grows quiet.
But the damage from the secret has already been done.
