The Last Chance
THE LAST CHANCE
A Short Drama Screenplay

Living Room – Night

The room is quiet, but the tension between Bethany and Larry is impossible to ignore. Bethany stands near the window, holding back tears. Larry sits across the room, visibly frustrated.

Bethany

Larry, I don’t want our marriage to end like this.

Larry

Then what do you want me to do, Bethany?

Bethany

I want us to get tested. Maybe we should find out if we can have a baby. Maybe… maybe the results will change everything.

Larry

You really think having a baby is going to fix everything between us?

Bethany

I don’t know. But I know I don’t want to lose you.

Bethany reaches for his hand, but he pulls it back. The silence grows heavier.

Larry

Fine. We’ll get the tests.

A small sense of hope appears on Bethany’s face.

Medical Clinic – Day

Bethany and Larry sit side by side in a waiting room. Bethany keeps glancing at Larry, hoping for reassurance. He is focused on his phone.

Nurse

Bethany? Larry? The doctor is ready to see you.

Doctor’s Office – Day

Doctor

We’ll begin with the necessary tests and then we’ll review the results together.

Bethany

Okay, Doctor.

Doctor

Try not to worry. We’ll take this one step at a time.

Bethany forces a small smile. Larry says nothing.

Clinic – Later

Bethany

Doctor… what happened?

Doctor

The pregnancy test wasn’t successful.

Bethany

What do you mean it wasn’t successful?

Doctor

The test didn’t produce a reliable result. In some cases, body weight and other factors can make certain tests more difficult to perform accurately.

Bethany

So… it failed because of my weight?

Doctor

I’m saying that your weight may be one of the factors affecting the test. We shouldn’t jump to conclusions yet.

Bethany wipes away a tear. Larry watches her silently.

Living Room – Night

Bethany sits alone on the couch. The report lies on the table. Her hands tremble slightly. Larry walks in and picks it up.

Bethany

Larry, please don’t give up on me. We can try again.

Larry

You said this test was going to change everything. But now we’re right back where we started.

Bethany

No. We’re not. We still have another chance.

Larry

How many chances do you think we have?

Bethany

As many as it takes.

Larry turns away.

Medical Clinic – Day (Second Visit)

A few days later, Bethany and Larry return. She looks nervous but determined. Larry sits with his arms crossed.

Doctor

We’re going to repeat the test and see if we can get a clearer result this time.

Bethany

I just want to know the truth.

The test is performed. They wait. Minutes feel like hours. The doctor returns, his expression unreadable.

Bethany

Doctor?

Doctor

Unfortunately, the test has failed again.

Bethany

Again?

Doctor

Yes. We still don’t have a reliable result.

Larry takes the report and studies it carefully. Bethany watches him. She knows something has changed.

Clinic Hallway – Moments Later

Bethany

Larry, please say something.

Larry stops walking and holds up the report.

Larry

Do you understand what this means?

Bethany

It means the test failed.

Larry

It means we still don’t have the answer.

Bethany

Then we can try again.

Larry

No. This is your last chance.

Bethany

What?

Larry

If you pass the pregnancy test, then maybe we can move forward. But if you don’t… I will divorce you.

Bethany

Larry, you can’t be serious.

Larry

I’m completely serious. I’m giving you one final chance.

Bethany

And what if the test fails again?

Larry

Then you already know what happens next.

Bethany stands frozen in the hallway. Larry walks away and disappears around the corner. Her eyes fill with tears. The report remains tightly clutched in her hand. For Bethany, everything now depends on one final chance.

FADE OUT.
