A Second Chance
Scene 1 — Living Room, Evening
The room is quiet. Brooke sits nervously across from Larry, her eyes filled with regret. Bethany stands nearby, watching the tense situation unfold. Brooke takes a deep breath — she knows she has made a serious mistake.
BROOKE“I know I made a mistake. I should have listened to you when you told me to focus on college. I thought I knew what I was doing, but I was wrong.”
Larry looks at her with a serious expression. Brooke slowly stands and moves closer to him.
BROOKE“I made a huge mistake by not going to college. Please, Larry. Give me another chance. Please get me admitted again. I promise I’ll take my studies seriously this time.”
For a moment, Larry says nothing. Then his expression changes — he becomes visibly angry.
LARRY“Another chance? Brooke, it’s too late now. I already told you what you needed to do. I told you to focus on your education, but you didn’t listen. Now you want me to fix everything for you?”
BROOKE“No. I just want to make things right.”
Larry turns away from her.
LARRY“You had your opportunity. From now on, you’re going to work.”
BROOKE“Work?”
LARRY“Yes. I’m not sending you to college again. And I’m not going to keep spending money on something you refused to take seriously the first time.”
BROOKE“But I understand now.”
LARRY“You should have understood before.”
The words hit Brooke hard. Bethany watches silently. Brooke looks down at the floor.
BROOKE“I know. I’m sorry.”
LARRY“I warned you, Brooke. I told you to leave Isaiah alone and focus on your studies. But you didn’t listen to me. You made your choice. Now you have to live with the consequences.”
Brooke slowly walks toward Larry, her hands together, tears falling freely.
BROOKE“Please forgive me. I know I disappointed you. I should have listened to you. I thought Isaiah was more important than anything else. But now I realize how wrong I was. Please don’t give up on me. I’ll work hard. I’ll study hard. I’ll do whatever you ask.”
Bethany finally steps forward.
BETHANY“Larry…”
Larry raises his hand, stopping her.
LARRY“No, Bethany. She needs to understand that choices have consequences.”
BROOKE“I understand.”
A long silence fills the room. For the first time, Larry’s anger begins to soften — but he doesn’t say anything.
BROOKE“So… you’re really not going to let me go back to college?”
LARRY“I don’t know.”
BROOKE“You don’t know?”
LARRY“Right now, my answer is no. But that doesn’t mean you can’t prove yourself. If you want another chance, show me that you’re serious. Get a job. Become responsible. Show me that you can make good decisions without someone forcing you to.”
BROOKE“I will.”
Larry walks toward the window. The room becomes quiet again. Brooke looks at Bethany, who gives her a sympathetic look. Brooke wipes her face — she knows Larry hasn’t completely closed the door, but she also knows she has a lot to prove.
BETHANY“Don’t give up, Brooke.”
BROOKE“I won’t. I’ll prove to him that I’ve changed.”
Larry hears her words but doesn’t turn around. A long pause follows. Then he finally speaks.
LARRY“We’ll see.”
Brooke takes a deep breath. For the first time that evening, she stops crying. She understands that getting back into college won’t be easy — but perhaps she hasn’t lost her chance completely.
Scene 2 — Brooke’s Bedroom, Night
Brooke sits alone on her bed. Her college dreams seem farther away than ever. She looks at an old notebook sitting on her desk and opens it. On the first page, she writes:
“I will not give up.”
She stares at the words. A tear rolls down her cheek. But this time, she smiles faintly.
BROOKE“I’m going to prove myself.”
Scene 3 — Living Room, Same Night
Larry stands alone by the window. His anger has faded. He looks thoughtful. Bethany walks into the room.
BETHANY“You know she really regrets it. Maybe she deserves another chance.”
Larry looks toward Brooke’s bedroom.
LARRY“Maybe. But a second chance has to be earned.”
Bethany nods. Larry looks down, lost in thought. For the first time, he considers the possibility that Brooke might truly have changed.
