The Question That Changed Everything

The Question That Changed Everything

A Story of Truth, Suspicion & Secrets

The evening had started peacefully.

Anthony sat on the patio, leaning back in his chair while Shayla sat across from him. The warm lights around the stone walls made everything look calm, but the silence between them felt anything but peaceful.

Shayla had been quiet for several minutes.

Anthony: “Okay, Shayla. What’s going on?”

She didn’t answer.

Anthony: “You’ve been looking at me like I’m hiding something all evening.”

Shayla slowly looked up.

Shayla: “Maybe I’m just trying to figure you out.”

Anthony: “Figure me out? What does that mean?”

Shayla leaned back and folded her arms.

Shayla: “It means I don’t know whether I can believe everything you tell me anymore.”

Anthony’s expression changed.

Anthony: “Seriously?”

Shayla: “Maybe I’m just trying to figure you out.”

Anthony looked around before turning his attention back to her.

Anthony: “So what, you think I’m out here running around doing whatever I want?”

Shayla stayed silent.

Anthony: “Do you really think I’m a dog?”

The question hung in the air.

Shayla: “I didn’t say that.”

Anthony: “You didn’t have to.”

Anthony stood up and took a few steps away from the chair.

Anthony: “I’m tired of feeling like I have to defend myself every time you get suspicious.”

Shayla: “And I’m tired of being told I’m suspicious when my questions have reasons behind them.”

Anthony: “What reasons?”

Shayla hesitated.

For the first time that evening, Anthony noticed something different in her expression.

She wasn’t angry anymore.

She looked disappointed.

“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear you ask.”

Anthony: “What are you talking about?”

Shayla reached into her phone but didn’t show him the screen.

Shayla: “There’s something I found out.”

Anthony: “Found out what?”

Shayla: “I’m not going to tell you yet.”

Anthony: “Why?”

Shayla: “Because I want to know if you’ll tell me the truth without me having to show you what I know.”

Anthony went quiet.

Shayla watched his reaction carefully.

“Anthony, this is your chance.”

Anthony: “A chance for what?”

Shayla: “A chance to be honest.”

Anthony: “I have nothing to hide.”

Shayla: “Then why did you suddenly get nervous?”

Anthony: “I’m not nervous.”

Shayla: “You are.”

Anthony: “You’re making this bigger than it is.”

“No. You’re making it smaller than it is.”

Another silence filled the patio.

Then a sound came from inside the house.

Both of them turned toward the doorway.

Someone had entered.

Shayla: “Who’s here?”

Anthony didn’t answer.

Shayla: “Anthony?”

Anthony: “I thought everyone was gone.”

Shayla: “Everyone?”

Anthony’s face became serious.

Before either of them could move, a voice came from inside.

“Anthony?”

Shayla froze.

She recognized the voice.

Anthony closed his eyes for a moment as if he already knew what was coming.

Shayla: “You know her?”

Anthony didn’t respond.

Shayla: “Anthony, I asked you a question.”

Anthony: “Yes.”

Shayla: “You know her.”

Anthony: “Yes.”

Shayla: “Then why did you tell me nobody was coming over?”

Anthony: “It’s not what you think.”

“That’s what everybody says when it’s exactly what I think.”

The woman appeared in the doorway but remained at a distance.

She looked at Anthony.

Then at Shayla.

Neither woman said anything.

Anthony: “Shayla, let me explain.”

Shayla: “No.”

Anthony: “Please.”

Shayla: “No, Anthony.”

She looked down at her phone.

“I already knew something was wrong.”

Anthony: “How?”

Shayla: “Because somebody sent me a message this afternoon.”

Anthony’s face went completely still.

Anthony: “What message?”

Shayla: “I’m not showing you.”

Anthony: “Why?”

Shayla: “Because I want you to tell me the truth first.”

Anthony swallowed hard.

Woman: “Maybe you should tell her.”

Anthony: “Stay out of this.”

Shayla: “Tell me what?”

Anthony remained silent.

The woman looked at Shayla.

“He never told you why I came here.”

Shayla: “Why did she come here?”

Anthony had no answer.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Shayla: “Now I understand why you didn’t want me asking questions.”

She picked up her belongings.

Anthony: “Shayla, wait.”

She stopped at the doorway but didn’t turn around.

Shayla: “You asked me if I thought you were a dog.”

Anthony remained silent.

“I wasn’t judging you. I was giving you a chance to prove me wrong.”
