Bethany Returns Home

BETHANY RETURNS HOME

EXT. CITY AIRPORT – LATE AFTERNOON

Golden sunlight pours across the busy airport.

Planes land one after another.

Travelers reunite with loved ones.

Some laugh.

Some cry.

Some stand frozen, unsure of what to say.

A taxi slowly pulls up near the arrivals entrance.

The back door opens.

BETHANY steps out with a suitcase in one hand and a shoulder bag hanging from her arm.

She pauses.

Her eyes scan the crowd.

She takes a slow breath, gathering the courage to face everything she left behind.

After weeks away, today changes everything.

Across the terminal, LARRY, BROOKE, and MR. NEWBURGER stand together.

None of them expected this moment to feel so overwhelming.

Brooke notices Bethany first. Her eyes instantly fill with tears.

BROOKE
Dad…
She’s here.

Larry slowly turns around. The moment he sees Bethany, he freezes.

His expression shifts from shock to relief.

Mr. Newburger quietly lowers his head, hiding the emotions building inside him.

Bethany notices all three of them.

For a moment, nobody moves.

The noise of the airport fades into the background.

Only silence remains between them.

Finally, Bethany begins walking toward them.

Every step feels heavier than the last.

Brooke can no longer hold back. She runs across the terminal.

BROOKE
Bethany!

Brooke throws her arms around Bethany.

The suitcase slips from Bethany’s hand.

She hugs Brooke tightly.

Both begin crying.

Neither wants to let go.

BETHANY
I missed you so much.
BROOKE
Please don’t ever leave again.
I wasn’t ready to lose you.

Bethany gently wipes Brooke’s tears.

BETHANY
I’m here now.
I’m not running anymore.

Larry slowly walks closer. He stops only a few feet away.

LARRY
I thought…
I thought you weren’t coming back.

Bethany looks directly into his eyes.

BETHANY
Neither did I.

But life has a way of bringing people back where they belong.
LARRY
I made mistakes.
More than I can count.
I hurt you.
I disappointed you.
I let anger speak louder than love.

For that…
I’m truly sorry.

Bethany studies his face and sees genuine regret.

BETHANY
You weren’t the only one who made mistakes.

I carried pain instead of talking about it.
I walked away instead of fighting for us.

Maybe we both lost our way.
LARRY
Maybe.

But I’m willing to find that way again.
If you’ll let me.

Bethany turns toward Mr. Newburger.

For the first time in years, he looks more like a father than a businessman.

MR. NEWBURGER
Welcome home…
Bethany.
BETHANY
I never thought I’d hear you say that.
MR. NEWBURGER
Pride can destroy families.

I let business become more important than my daughter.
I convinced myself I was doing the right thing.

I was wrong.
BETHANY
Do you know how many nights I wondered if you still loved me?
MR. NEWBURGER
Every single day.

I loved you.
I just forgot how to show it.

That was my greatest failure.

Bethany steps forward.

They embrace in a long emotional hug.

Nearby travelers smile as they witness the touching reunion.

Brooke wipes away happy tears while Larry struggles to hold back his emotions.

MR. NEWBURGER
Can you forgive an old father?
BETHANY
Forgiveness doesn’t erase the past.

But it gives us a chance to build a better future.

Yes…
I forgive you.
LARRY
I know forgiveness isn’t easy.

But if there’s even the smallest chance…
I’d like to earn your trust again.

Not with promises.
With actions.
BETHANY
Trust isn’t rebuilt overnight.

It’s rebuilt one honest day at a time.

If that’s truly what you want…
We’ll see where the journey leads.
LARRY
That’s enough for me.
BROOKE
Can everyone please stop making me cry in public?

I’ve missed this family.

The group laughs together as the tension finally disappears.

A soft airport announcement echoes overhead while passengers continue walking around them.

Time seems to stand still.

BETHANY
When I boarded that plane weeks ago…

I thought I was leaving my life behind.

Instead…
I found my way back to it.
MR. NEWBURGER
Home isn’t a building.

It’s the people willing to fight for each other.
LARRY
Whatever comes next…
You won’t face it alone.
BROOKE
Can we please go home now?
BETHANY
Yes.

Let’s go home.

The four of them walk toward the airport exit together.

Their past remains behind them.

Their future waits ahead.

The evening sun paints the sky in shades of gold and orange.

A gentle breeze welcomes a brand-new beginning.

The family walks toward the parking lot—not as perfect people, but as people finally willing to heal.

FADE OUT.
