Larry
The Overheard Conversation
The house is unusually quiet. Bethany sits with Larry, explaining everything that has been happening between Brooke and Isaiah. Larry’s expression grows more serious with every word.
BETHANY
I’m telling you, Larry, I knew from the beginning that Isaiah wasn’t right for Brooke. That boy was never loyal to her. He was only wasting her time. He never had any real intentions of loving Brooke the way she loved him.
LARRY
I understand what you’re saying. I just hate seeing Brooke hurt like this.
BETHANY
That’s exactly why I’ve been trying to tell you. Brooke keeps defending him, but everybody else can see what’s happening.
Neither of them realizes Brooke is nearby. She stops in the hallway when she hears her name — then Isaiah’s. Her expression changes. She listens, tense, as Bethany keeps talking about her relationship.
BETHANY
I’ve known for a long time that Isaiah wasn’t serious about Brooke. He was just wasting her time.
Brooke’s eyes widen. She can’t believe what she’s hearing. Taking a deep breath, she walks into the room. Bethany freezes. Larry turns around.
The Confrontation
BROOKE
What did you just say?
BROOKE
No. What did you just say about me and Isaiah?
BROOKE
How could you sit here and talk about me like that?
BETHANY
Brooke, I wasn’t trying to hurt you. I was just telling Larry what I believe.
BROOKE
You always think you know everything about my life! How dare you talk about me and Isaiah like that?
BETHANY
I’m your mother. I’m allowed to be concerned about you.
BROOKE
Being concerned about me doesn’t give you the right to disrespect my relationship!
Larry stands, hoping to keep the situation from getting worse.
LARRY
Brooke, your mom is only trying to protect you.
BROOKE
Dad, I understand that. But she keeps talking about Isaiah like she knows everything that happened between us.
Bethany’s Heartbreak
Bethany’s eyes fill with tears. Her voice softens.
BETHANY
I’ve watched you get hurt over and over again. I’m not saying these things because I hate Isaiah. I’m saying them because I don’t want to see my daughter keep getting hurt.
BROOKE
Then talk to me about it! Don’t sit here and talk about me behind my back.
The room goes completely quiet. Larry looks down, knowing both sides are emotional. Brooke wipes away a tear but refuses to let her anger disappear.
BROOKE
I’m tired of everybody telling me what I should feel.
BETHANY
Brooke, I just want you to be happy.
BROOKE
Then respect my feelings.
The Final Warning
BROOKE: And I’m giving you a final warning. From today on, if you ever talk about me and Isaiah like that again, I’m not going to let it slide. You don’t have to like him. You don’t have to agree with me. But you will respect me.
Brooke takes a breath. For a moment it looks like she might calm down. But the anger is still there.
BROOKE
Because I’m serious, Mom.
Brooke turns away and walks toward the hallway. The moment she disappears, Bethany lowers her head. Her emotions finally overwhelm her.
Aftermath: Two Rooms, Two Hearts
BETHANY
I wasn’t trying to hurt her. I was just trying to protect my daughter.
BETHANY
She thinks I’m against her.
LARRY
She’s angry right now. Give her some time.
BETHANY
But what am I supposed to do when I see her making decisions that could hurt her?
LARRY
You can still be there for her without fighting with her.
BETHANY
I just want her to understand that everything I say comes from love.
Meanwhile, Brooke walks into her bedroom and closes the door, leaning against it. Her anger slowly turns into sadness. She sits on the edge of her bed.
BROOKE
Why does everybody keep getting involved? I just want people to understand me.
Back in the living room, Bethany is still crying. Larry sits beside her.
LARRY
You love Brooke. She knows that.
BETHANY
Then why does it feel like she hates me?
LARRY
She doesn’t hate you. She’s hurt.
BETHANY
I never wanted things to get this bad.
LARRY
Sometimes when you love somebody, you want to protect them so badly that they feel like you’re controlling them.
BETHANY
I just hope she knows I’m still here for her.
The house falls silent again. Brooke sits alone in her room, while Bethany remains downstairs trying to hold back her tears.
Neither mother nor daughter realizes how deeply the argument has affected the other. Brooke is angry because she feels misunderstood. Bethany is crying because she feels like her daughter no longer trusts her. And Larry is caught in the middle, hoping the two of them can eventually sit down and talk without anger.
For now, the distance between Brooke and Bethany feels bigger than ever.
But beneath all the anger and tears, one thing remains clear — they both still care deeply about each other.
