THE BREAKING POINT

INT. BROOKE’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — MORNING

Soft morning light spills through the windows.

The house is unusually quiet.

BROOKE sits at the table, staring at her phone. Several Chicago-related documents are spread in front of her.

She looks hopeful.

Then the front door opens.

BETHANY walks in.

Her expression is tense.

BETHANY

You’re still planning to go to Chicago?

Brooke slowly looks up.

BROOKE

Yes. Why wouldn’t I?

Bethany walks toward the table and looks at the papers.

BETHANY

Because you know Larry doesn’t want you going.

BROOKE

Larry can make his own decisions. So can I.

Bethany picks up one of the papers.

BETHANY

This whole Chicago plan is a mistake.

Brooke takes the paper from her hand.

BROOKE

It’s not your decision.

A long silence.

Bethany stares at her.

BETHANY

You’re not listening to anyone.

BROOKE

Maybe because everyone keeps trying to tell me what I should do.

Brooke gathers her papers.

Bethany watches her carefully.

There is something different in Brooke’s expression now.

Determination.

INT. LARRY’S OFFICE — AFTERNOON

LARRY sits behind his desk.

Bethany stands across from him.

She looks concerned.

BETHANY

Larry, you need to stop Brooke from going to Chicago.

Larry looks up from his paperwork.

LARRY

Why?

BETHANY

Because she isn’t thinking clearly.

Larry leans back.

LARRY

Brooke is an adult, Bethany.

BETHANY

You know how important Chicago is to her. If she goes, everything could change.

Larry studies her.

LARRY

Is this really about Brooke?

Bethany hesitates.

BETHANY

I just don’t want her making a mistake.

Larry sighs.

LARRY

I’ll talk to her.

Bethany nods.

But her expression suggests she wanted more than that.

INT. BROOKE’S HOUSE — KITCHEN — NIGHT

Brooke enters the kitchen.

Bethany is already there.

The atmosphere immediately becomes tense.

BETHANY

Larry called you.

Brooke stops.

BROOKE

You told him to stop me from going.

BETHANY

Because someone has to be realistic.

BROOKE

You had no right.

BETHANY

I had every right to tell him the truth.

Brooke steps closer.

BROOKE

The truth?

BETHANY

You’re throwing everything away for some fantasy in Chicago.

Brooke’s eyes fill with anger.

BROOKE

It’s my future.

BETHANY

You’re making a terrible decision.

BROOKE

And you’re making sure I never get the chance to make it.

Bethany shakes her head.

BETHANY

You’re being selfish.

That word cuts deep.

BROOKE

Don’t call me selfish.

BETHANY

Then stop acting like it.

Their voices rise.

The argument becomes heated.

Bethany points toward the Chicago papers.

BETHANY

You’re not going anywhere.

Brooke stares at her.

BROOKE

You don’t control me.

BETHANY

Someone has to stop you.

Brooke’s breathing becomes heavy.

Her eyes fall on a cup sitting on the counter.

For one terrible moment, everything goes quiet.

Brooke grabs it.

BETHANY

Brooke, don’t—

Brooke swings the cup.

It strikes Bethany on the head.

The cup falls to the floor and shatters.

Bethany stumbles backward.

BETHANY

Oh God…

She touches her head.

Brooke immediately realizes what she has done.

BROOKE

Bethany…

Bethany pushes Brooke.

Brooke pushes back.

The two women struggle with each other.

A chair falls.

A table is knocked sideways.

The room erupts into chaos.

INT. BROOKE’S HOUSE — HALLWAY — CONTINUOUS

Larry walks toward the room.

He hears shouting.

He stops.

LARRY

Brooke?

No answer.

Larry rushes toward the door.

INT. BROOKE’S HOUSE — KITCHEN — CONTINUOUS

Larry enters.

Everything stops.

Bethany is lying injured on the floor.

Brooke stands nearby, breathing heavily.

The broken cup lies between them.

LARRY

Bethany!

He rushes to her.

Brooke takes a step backward.

BROOKE

Larry, I didn’t—

LARRY

What happened?

BROOKE

We were arguing. She kept pushing me and I…

Brooke looks at the broken cup.

BROOKE

I didn’t mean for this to happen.

INT. BROOKE’S HOUSE — FRONT DOOR — MOMENTS LATER

The front door opens.

LYNETTE enters.

She has come to meet Larry.

LYNETTE

Larry?

She hears the commotion.

Lynette walks toward the kitchen.

Then she sees Brooke.

She freezes.

Her eyes move from Brooke to the injured Bethany.

The broken cup.

The blood.

Everything suddenly makes sense.

LYNETTE

Oh my God…

Brooke looks at Lynette.

BROOKE

Lynette, please…

Lynette is speechless.

Then—

SIRENS.

Everyone turns toward the front door.

INT. BROOKE’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — MOMENTS LATER

Two POLICE OFFICERS enter.

Larry stands beside Bethany.

Lynette remains frozen.

Brooke looks terrified.

One officer approaches her.

OFFICER

Brooke, step away from the kitchen.

Brooke slowly raises her hands.

BROOKE

I didn’t mean to hurt her.

The officer looks at her seriously.

OFFICER

You need to come with us.

Brooke looks toward Larry.

BROOKE

Larry…

Larry says nothing.

His face is filled with disappointment and shock.

The officers place handcuffs on Brooke.

Brooke looks at Bethany one last time.

Bethany remains on the floor, receiving attention from the other officer.

Brooke’s eyes fill with tears.

BROOKE

I’m sorry.

No one answers.

The officers lead Brooke toward the door.

Lynette watches in disbelief.

Larry remains beside Bethany.

Outside, the police lights flash across the windows.

Brooke disappears through the doorway.

The door closes.

Silence.

One terrible moment has changed everything.

FADE OUT.
