A family argument takes an unexpected turn when Mr. Newburger makes a life-changing decision.
Scene 1 — Larry and Bethany’s Living Room
The room is tense. Bethany stands near the window with her arms crossed while Larry sits on the couch, already exhausted by everything happening around Brooke, Sharra, and the rest of the family.
Bethany takes a deep breath before finally speaking.
BETHANY
“We can’t keep living like this, Larry. Every day, there’s another problem, another argument, and another situation we have to deal with.”
Larry looks at her with frustration.
LARRY
“So what exactly are you suggesting?”
Bethany walks toward him slowly.
BETHANY
“I’m saying we need to stop getting involved in all these problems. We should send Brooke to Sharra’s house and let Sharra deal with her.”

“Matt.”

“What are you doing here?”

“I’ve watched you argue with Larry. I’ve watched you become stressed over problems that never seem to end.”

MR. NEWBURGER
“That’s why I’ve made a decision.”

“I’m not trying to hurt you, Bethany. I’m trying to protect you.”
BETHANY
“But this is my life!”

“You can’t decide who I marry because Larry and I had an argument!”
