THE SECRET MARRIAGE

SCENE 1 — LARRY’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — EVENING

Rain taps softly against the windows. LARRY sits on the sofa, looking through his phone. He seems distracted.

The front door opens.

PURNELL walks inside, calm and confident. Larry looks up immediately.

LARRY

You’re finally here. I’ve been waiting for you.

Purnell forces a small smile and sits across from him.

PURNELL

I know. I needed to talk to you about something important.

Larry puts his phone down.

LARRY

Is this about Bethany?

Purnell pauses for a moment.

PURNELL

Yes. It’s about Bethany.

Larry leans forward, concerned.

LARRY

What happened?

Purnell lowers his voice, making the conversation sound serious.

PURNELL

There are things happening around Bethany that you don’t know about. Things you need to be careful about.

Larry looks confused.

LARRY

What are you talking about?

PURNELL

I’m telling you because I don’t want you to get hurt.

Larry studies Purnell’s face.

LARRY

You’re making this sound worse than it is.

Purnell slowly shakes his head.

PURNELL

Trust me, Larry. You need to think carefully about Bethany.

Larry becomes increasingly suspicious.

SCENE 2 — LARRY’S HOUSE — KITCHEN — LATER

Larry stands near the kitchen counter, holding a cup of coffee.

Purnell walks in behind him.

LARRY

You said Bethany was hiding something from me. What exactly did you mean?

Purnell takes a breath.

PURNELL

I heard some things about her situation. I thought you deserved to know.

LARRY

From who?

Purnell hesitates.

PURNELL

I can’t tell you everything.

Larry turns around sharply.

LARRY

Then why bring it up?

Purnell looks uncomfortable.

PURNELL

Because I care about you.

Larry’s expression softens slightly.

LARRY

Then just tell me the truth.

Purnell looks away.

PURNELL

Maybe you should keep your distance from Bethany for a while.

Larry stares at him.

LARRY

You really believe she’s going to cause me problems?

PURNELL

I believe you need to protect yourself.

Larry nods slowly, still uncertain.

He doesn’t realize Purnell is carefully steering the conversation away from his own secret.

SCENE 3 — SHARRA’S HOUSE — NIGHT

Sharra stands near the window, watching the rain.

A knock comes at the door.

She opens it.

Purnell stands outside.

Sharra immediately smiles.

SHARRA

You came.

Purnell steps inside.

PURNELL

I had to.

Sharra closes the door behind him.

SHARRA

Did Larry believe you?

Purnell looks at her seriously.

PURNELL

He believed enough of it.

Sharra’s smile grows.

SHARRA

So he still doesn’t know about us?

PURNELL

No.

Sharra walks closer.

SHARRA

Then we can finally do this.

Purnell takes her hand.

PURNELL

Are you sure?

Sharra nods without hesitation.

SHARRA

I’ve never been more sure about anything.

They exchange an emotional look.

SCENE 4 — SMALL WEDDING VENUE — NIGHT

Soft lights illuminate the small venue.

Sharra and Purnell stand together, dressed for their wedding.

The atmosphere is intimate and emotional.

Purnell looks at Sharra.

PURNELL

After tonight, everything changes.

SHARRA

I know.

She takes his hand.

SHARRA

No more hiding.

Purnell smiles.

PURNELL

No more secrets.

They exchange vows.

The ceremony comes to an end.

Sharra and Purnell are officially married.

They embrace, both overwhelmed by the moment.

SCENE 5 — LARRY’S HOUSE — NEXT MORNING

Larry walks into the living room carrying his phone.

His expression suddenly changes.

He has received a message.

Larry reads it twice.

LARRY

What?

He looks shocked.

The message contains news about Purnell and Sharra.

Larry sits down slowly.

LARRY

No… this can’t be true.

He immediately calls Purnell.

The phone rings.

No answer.

Larry calls again.

Still nothing.

LARRY

Pick up the phone, Purnell.

Larry becomes frustrated.

SCENE 6 — SHARRA’S HOUSE — MORNING

Purnell’s phone vibrates on the table.

Sharra looks at it.

She sees Larry’s name.

SHARRA

It’s Larry.

Purnell looks at the phone but doesn’t answer.

PURNELL

I’m not ready to talk to him.

SHARRA

You knew this moment would come.

Purnell sighs.

PURNELL

I know.

Sharra looks at him seriously.

SHARRA

You told him things about Bethany so he would trust you.

Purnell looks down.

PURNELL

I thought it was the only way.

SHARRA

And now?

Purnell looks toward her.

PURNELL

Now I have to face what I did.

SCENE 7 — LARRY CONFRONTS PURNELL — AFTERNOON

Larry arrives at Purnell’s location.

Purnell steps outside.

Larry walks toward him, visibly hurt.

LARRY

You lied to me.

Purnell remains silent.

LARRY

You came to me talking about Bethany. You made me believe you were warning me because you cared.

Purnell looks ashamed.

PURNELL

I did care about you.

LARRY

Then why did you deceive me?

Purnell struggles to answer.

PURNELL

Because I knew you wouldn’t understand what I was doing.

Larry shakes his head.

LARRY

You used Bethany’s name to distract me.

Purnell finally admits it.

PURNELL

Yes.

Larry takes a step back.

LARRY

And while you were warning me about Bethany, you were planning your own marriage?

Purnell looks down.

PURNELL

Yes.

Larry’s face shows disbelief.

LARRY

With Sharra?

Purnell nods.

PURNELL

With Sharra.

Larry turns away, trying to process everything.

SCENE 8 — SHARRA ARRIVES

A car pulls up nearby.

Sharra steps out and walks toward them.

Larry looks at her.

LARRY

So it’s true.

Sharra stops.

SHARRA

Yes, Larry. It’s true.

Larry looks between Sharra and Purnell.

LARRY

You both kept this from me.

SHARRA

We were afraid of how you would react.

LARRY

You should have told me the truth.

Sharra lowers her eyes.

SHARRA

Maybe we should have.

Larry looks at Purnell.

LARRY

You didn’t just hide your marriage. You made me question Bethany because of it.

Purnell nods slowly.

PURNELL

I know. And I regret that.

Larry takes a deep breath.

LARRY

An apology doesn’t erase what you did.

Purnell has no answer.

SCENE 9 — LARRY’S HOUSE — NIGHT

Larry sits alone in the living room.

The rain has returned.

His phone rests on the table.

He thinks about everything Purnell told him about Bethany.

Slowly, Larry realizes how easily he believed the story.

LARRY

I trusted the wrong person.

He picks up his phone and looks at Bethany’s name.

After a long pause, he makes the call.

SCENE 10 — BETHANY’S HOUSE — SAME NIGHT

Bethany answers the phone.

BETHANY

Larry?

Larry sounds serious.

LARRY

Bethany, I owe you an explanation.

Bethany looks confused.

BETHANY

About what?

Larry takes a breath.

LARRY

About everything Purnell told me.

Bethany listens carefully.

LARRY

I think I was misled.

Bethany’s expression changes.

BETHANY

What happened?

LARRY

Purnell was hiding something from me. He used what he said about you to keep me distracted.

Bethany is stunned.

BETHANY

What was he hiding?

Larry pauses.

LARRY

He married Sharra.

Bethany’s eyes widen.

Silence fills the room.

BETHANY

Purnell married Sharra?

LARRY

Yes.

Bethany slowly sits down.

BETHANY

Then everything he told you about me…

LARRY

I don’t know how much of it was true.

Bethany looks toward the window.

BETHANY

Then we need to find out the truth.

Larry nods, even though she cannot see him.

LARRY

I agree.

The call continues as the camera slowly pulls away.

Outside, the rain falls harder.

Purnell and Sharra may have started a new life together, but their secret has already created a new conflict—one that could expose everything they tried to hide.
