But before she could finish, Anthony’s voice suddenly came through the phone again.

“Dave, don’t let Amber tell you the whole story without hearing my side first!”

Dave raised the phone back to his ear.

“Then get here, Anthony!”

He ended the call and stood in the middle of the hospital room, gripping the DNA report so tightly that the paper began to bend.

Amber remained frozen near the doctor’s desk, tears running down her cheeks. She wanted to speak, to explain herself, but the words seemed trapped in her throat.

Dave looked at her one last time.

“You have no idea what you’ve just done.”

At that exact moment, the hospital elevator doors opened down the hallway.

A man stepped out and began walking toward the consultation room. His expression was cold, his jaw tight, and his eyes fixed straight ahead.

It was Anthony.
