The Fall That Changed Everything
Dave stood at the front door, watching Amber walk slowly toward the stairs.
They had spent the last several minutes arguing, but somehow they had finally reached an understanding.
“Come home with me, Amber,” Dave said quietly. “I know I messed up, but I don’t want us to keep hurting each other.”
Amber looked at him for a long moment.
“You really mean that?”
“I do.”
Amber sighed. “Then prove it with your actions, not your words.”
Dave nodded. “I will.”
The Terrifying Fall
“I’m going to stay downstairs for a while,” Amber said. “I just need some space.”
“Okay,” Dave replied. “But please be careful on the stairs.”
Amber slowly started walking down.
Then Dave heard a sudden scream.
“DAVE!”
Dave turned around and saw Amber at the bottom of the stairs, crying and holding her belly.
“Amber! Are you okay?”
“I don’t know!” she cried. “Dave, something feels wrong!”
Dave’s face went pale. “Don’t move. I’m calling an ambulance.”
Amber looked terrified. “What if something happened to the baby?”
“I don’t know, Amber,” Dave said, his voice shaking. “But we’re going to find out.”
The Hospital
The ambulance arrived, and the paramedics carefully took Amber to the hospital. Dave followed them, terrified.
Amber was taken into an examination room while Dave was told to wait outside.
Dave paced through the hallway, unable to stop thinking about Amber’s scream.
A nurse finally came outside.
“Are you Dave?”
“Yes. How is Amber?”
“She is being examined by the doctor.”
Dave immediately asked, “And the baby?”
The nurse paused. “We need the doctor’s examination before we can tell you anything.”
The Fear of Losing the Baby
Dave sat down, staring at the floor. Every second felt longer than the last.
Inside the room, Amber asked, “Doctor, is my baby still okay?”
“We’re doing everything we can to determine that,” the doctor replied.
Amber closed her eyes. “I just want to know if I lost my baby.”
Outside, Dave heard the room door open.
The doctor stepped into the hallway.
“Mr. Dave?”
“Yes?”
“We need one more examination before we can give you a definite answer.”
Dave’s heart sank.
“Please don’t let anything happen to them,” he whispered.
The Final Answer
Minutes later, Dave was allowed into the room. Amber was lying quietly, tears running down her face.
“Dave… did they tell you?”
“Not yet.”
Amber grabbed his hand. “I’m scared.”
“I’m scared too.”
“What if we lost the baby?”
“We don’t know that yet.”
Suddenly, the doctor returned.
“Doctor?”
“We have the results.”
Dave and Amber looked at each other.
The doctor finally said, “The baby is still with us.”
Amber’s eyes widened. “Are you sure?”
“Yes. The examination shows that the pregnancy is continuing.”
There had been no miscarriage.
Amber covered her face and cried with relief.
Dave sat beside her, overwhelmed.
“I thought I was going to lose you both,” Dave said.
Amber looked at him through her tears.
“Then don’t ever give me another reason to be afraid.”
Dave nodded. “I won’t.”
The fall had terrified them both, but the baby was safe for now.
