Divorce Papers
INT. BETHANY’S BEDROOM — EVENING
The room is quiet.
Bethany sits on the edge of her bed, lost in thought. Her eyes are tired, and the weight of everything happening around her seems impossible to hide.
Suddenly, the bedroom door swings open.
Larry walks in.
He is holding a thick envelope.
His face is tense. His jaw is clenched, and his footsteps are heavy.
Bethany looks up.
She immediately notices the papers in his hand.
Her expression changes.
BETHANY
Larry?
She stares at the envelope.
BETHANY
What is that?
Larry walks toward her without answering.
He stops directly in front of her and places the envelope on the bed.
LARRY
These are the divorce papers.
Bethany stares at him.
For a moment, she seems unable to process what she just heard.
BETHANY
Divorce papers?
Larry picks up the documents and places them directly in front of her.
LARRY
Yes.
Bethany slowly looks from the papers to Larry.
Her eyes begin to fill with tears.
BETHANY
Why are you doing this?
Larry takes a deep breath, trying to control his anger.
LARRY
Because I’m tired of going in circles.
He pushes the papers closer to her.
LARRY
Sign them.
Bethany shakes her head.
BETHANY
Larry, please…
Her voice cracks.
BETHANY
Can we just talk about this?
Larry steps closer.
His voice becomes cold and firm.
LARRY
There’s nothing left to talk about.
Bethany wipes away a tear.
BETHANY
You can’t just walk into my room and demand this from me.
Larry looks directly at her.
LARRY
Sign the divorce papers, or things are not going to end well for you.
Bethany freezes.
The words hit her like a shock.
BETHANY
Are you threatening me?
Larry doesn’t answer immediately.
The silence between them becomes unbearable.
LARRY
I’m telling you that this needs to end.
Bethany looks down at the papers.
Her hands begin to tremble.
She picks them up but struggles to hold them steady.
BETHANY
I never thought it would come to this.
Larry watches her.
For a brief moment, the anger on his face gives way to disappointment, frustration, and regret.
LARRY
Neither did I.
Bethany looks up at him through tear-filled eyes.
BETHANY
Then why does it feel like you hate me?
Larry remains silent.
Bethany lets out a shaky breath.
BETHANY
We promised each other so many things.
She looks around the room.
Memories seem to surround her.
BETHANY
How did we get here?
Larry lowers his eyes.
LARRY
Sometimes promises aren’t enough.
Bethany’s tears finally fall.
She reaches for the pen lying beside the papers.
Her fingers tremble around it.
Larry watches.
Bethany hesitates.
BETHANY
If I sign these…
She struggles to finish the sentence.
BETHANY
…is this really over?
Larry’s expression tightens.
LARRY
Yes.
Bethany closes her eyes.
A tear rolls down her cheek.
She opens them again and looks at the signature line.
The room falls completely silent.
Only the faint sound of her breathing can be heard.
She places the pen on the paper.
Her hand shakes as she begins to sign.
BETHANY
I can’t believe this is happening.
Larry looks at her.
For the first time, his anger begins to fade.
He watches Bethany sign her name through tears.
The pen moves slowly across the page.
Bethany pauses halfway through.
She looks at Larry one last time.
BETHANY
Are you really sure?
Larry doesn’t respond.
His silence is enough.
Bethany looks back down.
She finishes signing.
The pen slips slightly from her fingers.
She places it on the bed.
Her shoulders begin to shake as she quietly cries.
Larry reaches for the papers.
Bethany immediately pulls them toward herself.
BETHANY
Just give me a minute.
Larry stops.
Bethany holds the papers against her chest.
BETHANY
Please.
Larry stares at her.
The anger is gone now.
What remains is an uncomfortable silence between two people who once meant everything to each other.
LARRY
Bethany…
She doesn’t look at him.
BETHANY
Please don’t.
Larry takes a step back.
Bethany wipes her tears, but more continue to fall.
BETHANY
I gave everything I had to this.
Larry looks down at the floor.
LARRY
I know.
Bethany finally looks at him.
BETHANY
Then why wasn’t it enough?
Larry has no answer.
His face reveals the weight of the question.
He turns toward the door.
Bethany watches him leave.
Before he reaches the doorway, she speaks again.
BETHANY
Larry.
He stops.
He doesn’t turn around.
BETHANY
I hope someday you understand how much this hurt me.
Larry closes his eyes.
For several seconds, neither of them moves.
Finally, Larry opens the door.
He walks out.
The door slowly closes behind him.
Bethany remains sitting on the bed.
She looks down at the signed divorce papers.
Her tears fall onto the pages.
She touches her signature with trembling fingers.
BETHANY
Goodbye, Larry.
Her voice is barely a whisper.
The room becomes silent again.
Bethany pulls her knees toward her chest and breaks down crying.
Outside the room, Larry stands in the hallway.
He hears her crying through the closed door.
His eyes become glassy.
He reaches toward the door…
But stops.
His hand slowly drops.
Larry takes a deep breath and walks away.
Inside the bedroom, Bethany remains alone with the papers that have changed everything.
