The evening begins with another argument inside Larry and Bethany’s home. The atmosphere is tense, and Brooke stands facing Bethany, refusing to accept another accusation.

BETHANY 💢

Brooke, I am tired of your attitude! You think you can do whatever you want in this house and never face the consequences. You need to learn how to respect me!

BROOKE 😠

Respect you? Why should I respect someone who constantly tries to control my life? You always have a problem with me, no matter what I do!

Larry sits nearby, listening to their raised voices. He has tried to keep peace between them for a long time, but his patience is finally running out.

BETHANY

Everything I do is for this family, but you act as if I am your enemy!

BROOKE

You only care about getting your own way. You never stop to think about how your actions affect anyone else!

Larry suddenly stands up, his expression filled with frustration.

LARRY 🔥

ENOUGH! Both of you, stop this nonsense right now! I cannot take this anymore. Every time I come home, there is another argument. I deserve some peace in my own house!

BETHANY

Larry, why are you shouting at me? Brooke is the one who keeps disrespecting me!

BROOKE

And you are always blaming me for everything!

Larry grabs his keys from the table and storms toward the front door.

LARRY

I need to get out of here before this situation gets any worse!

The door slams behind him. Bethany stares at it, shocked. Then anger replaces her confusion.

BETHANY 😤

Look what you have done! You have pushed him to the point where he cannot even stay in his own house!

BROOKE

Do not blame me for Larry’s decisions. He is a grown man, and he can decide where he wants to go!

Bethany ignores Brooke and rushes outside, determined to discover where her husband is going.

🚗 SCENE 2 — OUTSIDE THE HOUSE — CONTINUOUS

Larry gets into his car and drives away. Bethany comes outside just in time to see his vehicle disappearing down the street. She quickly takes her own car and follows him from a distance.

BETHANY

Where are you going, Larry? You cannot just walk out on me without explaining anything.

For several minutes, she wonders whether he is going to a friend’s house. Then Larry turns onto a familiar street, and Bethany recognizes the neighborhood.

BETHANY 😨

No… He cannot be going there.

Larry stops outside Sharra’s house. He gets out, looks around, and approaches the front door. Bethany parks farther down the street, watching every movement.

BETHANY

Sharra’s house? Why would Larry come here after leaving our home in anger?

Sharra opens the door. Surprise crosses her face, followed by a small, uncertain smile.

SHARRA

Larry? What are you doing here at this hour?

LARRY

I needed somewhere to go. Things at home became unbearable, and I needed to get away for a while.

SHARRA

Then come inside. You do not have to explain everything at the door.

Larry enters, and Sharra closes the door. From her car, Bethany watches the entire exchange, unable to believe what she has witnessed.

He came straight to Sharra. After everything we have been through, he came straight to her.

She reaches for her phone but decides not to call him. She wants to know the truth before confronting him.

Sharra leads Larry into the living room. He sits on the sofa and rubs his forehead, exhausted by the conflict at home.

SHARRA

You look completely exhausted. Was the argument really that bad?

LARRY

It was worse than you think. Bethany and Brooke cannot seem to get along, and somehow, I always end up caught between them.

SHARRA

You cannot spend your entire life trying to keep everyone happy, Larry. Eventually, you have to think about your own peace.

LARRY

That is exactly what I am trying to do. I just want to forget everything for a little while.

Sharra gently touches his hand. Their shared history makes the silence between them feel unusually personal.

SHARRA

You have always tried to carry everyone else’s problems. Maybe tonight, you should stop worrying about them.

LARRY

I should not have come here like this.

SHARRA

But you did come. And I am not going to pretend that your being here means nothing to me.

Larry looks away, conflicted. Neither of them can ignore the feelings and memories that remain between them.

LARRY

I do not know what I am doing anymore.

SHARRA

Then stop thinking about everything for one moment.

They move closer and share an intimate moment. Neither fully considers the consequences of crossing a boundary that Larry should have respected.

Outside, Bethany remains in her car. She finally decides that waiting is no longer enough. She opens the door and walks toward Sharra’s house.

Bethany reaches the front door and discovers that it has not been fully closed. She pauses, listening to the faint voices inside.

BETHANY

Larry? Are you in there?

No one answers. Bethany carefully pushes the door open and walks down the hallway. As she reaches the bedroom doorway, she suddenly stops.

She sees Larry and Sharra together in an intimate situation. The sight leaves her speechless.

LARRY 😨

Bethany… What are you doing here?

BETHANY 💔

What am I doing here? That is what you want to ask me?

Her eyes fill with tears as she looks from Larry to Sharra, struggling to understand what she has discovered.

BETHANY

You left our house because you were angry. I thought you needed time to calm down. I followed you because I was worried about you. And this is what I find?

LARRY

Bethany, please. Let me explain.

BETHANY

Explain what? Why you came here? Why you hid this from me? Or why you thought betraying me was the answer to your problems?

LARRY

Things have been difficult between us. I was upset, and I made a terrible decision.

BETHANY

Being upset does not give you the right to destroy our relationship!

SHARRA

Bethany, this situation is complicated. You do not know everything that has happened between us.

BETHANY

Then tell me! What could possibly justify this?

Sharra falls silent. Larry lowers his eyes, unable to offer an explanation that could make the moment less painful.

You had the perfect opportunity to talk to me before you came here. You could have told me you were unhappy. You could have asked for space. You could have done anything except this!

LARRY

I know I made a mistake.

BETHANY

No, Larry. You made a choice. And now I have to live with what I saw tonight.

Larry reaches toward her, but Bethany immediately steps back.

BETHANY

Do not touch me.

Larry stops. Bethany wipes her tears and takes a deep breath before continuing.

BETHANY

I defended you when people questioned our relationship. I stood beside you when things were difficult. I believed that whatever happened between us, you would at least be honest with me.

BETHANY

But tonight, you showed me that I may have been wrong about the man I married.

LARRY

I never wanted to hurt you this way.

BETHANY

But you did.

Bethany walks toward the front door. Larry follows her, his expression filled with regret.

LARRY

Where are you going?

BETHANY

Somewhere I can think without looking at you and remembering what I saw tonight.

She opens the door and walks outside. Larry remains in the living room, unable to stop her. Sharra stands behind him, saying nothing.

Through the windshield, she sees Larry standing at the front door. He looks as though he wants to come after her, but he remains where he is.

BETHANY

You wanted peace, Larry. But what about mine?

She starts the engine and drives away, leaving Larry standing beneath the porch light.

Inside, Sharra watches through the window. She knows Bethany has witnessed something that cannot easily be forgotten.

LARRY

Everything has changed now.

SHARRA

It changed the moment Bethany walked through that door.

Larry lowers his head as the consequences of his decision begin to sink in. He has no idea whether Bethany will ever trust him again.
