SHARRA GETS ARRESTED AFTER HER MOTHER’S LAST PHONE CALL
SCENE 1: THE UNEXPECTED PHONE CALL
Larry sits on the couch, scrolling through his phone. Sharra walks into the living room, looking worried. She has been thinking about her mother ever since she learned that she escaped from the halfway house.
Larry notices the expression on her face.
Sharra, what’s going on with you? You’ve been acting strange all morning. Is something wrong?
I’m just worried about my mother. I still can’t believe she ran away from the halfway house. I don’t even know where she is right now.
I understand that she’s your mother, but you need to be careful. The police are probably looking for her, and you don’t want to get caught up in whatever she’s doing.
Sharra looks down at her phone, hoping her mother will call again.
I know, Larry. But she’s still my mother. I can’t just pretend that I don’t care about her.
Suddenly, Larry’s phone begins ringing. He looks at the screen and sees an unfamiliar number.
Hello? Who is this?
Good morning. This is Officer Williams from the police department. Am I speaking with Larry?
Yes, this is Larry. What’s going on?
We need you and Sharra to come down to the police station immediately. We have some questions regarding her mother’s disappearance.
Larry looks at Sharra, who immediately becomes nervous.
What kind of questions? Is something wrong?
We cannot discuss the details over the phone. We need both of you here as soon as possible.
The officer ends the call. Larry slowly lowers his phone. Sharra looks at him anxiously.
Larry, what did the police want? Please tell me they haven’t found my mother.
They want both of us at the police station. Apparently, they have some questions about your mother.
Sharra’s face changes. She begins to worry that the police have discovered something.
Oh, my God! Larry, what if they think I helped her escape?
Then we’ll go there and find out exactly what’s happening. Just stay calm and tell the truth.
Sharra takes a deep breath, but she knows the situation could become serious.
SCENE 2: THE DRIVE TO THE POLICE STATION
Larry walks toward his car while Sharra follows him. She keeps checking her phone, hoping to receive a message from her mother.
Larry, I really don’t want to go to the police station. What if they arrest me?
Nobody said they’re going to arrest you. They just want to ask you some questions.
But why would they call both of us if they only wanted to ask questions about my mother?
Larry opens the driver’s door and looks at her.
Because I’m your husband, and they probably want to know whether I know anything about what happened.
Sharra gets into the car. Larry starts the engine and drives away.
During the journey, Sharra remains unusually quiet. Larry glances at her several times.
You need to stop worrying so much. If you haven’t done anything wrong, there’s no reason to panic.
You don’t understand, Larry. My mother has already gotten herself into trouble. I don’t want the police blaming me for something I didn’t do.
Then make sure you explain everything clearly when we get there.
Sharra turns toward the window. She feels increasingly nervous as they approach the police station.
SCENE 3: THE POLICE REVEAL THE EVIDENCE
Larry and Sharra enter the police station. An officer greets them and directs them to a small interrogation room.
A detective is waiting at the table with several documents and a computer.
Larry, Sharra, thank you for coming. Please have a seat. We need to discuss something very important.
Larry and Sharra sit down. Sharra nervously folds her hands in her lap.
Officer, can you please tell us what’s going on? You called us here, and we want to know why.
We’re investigating the disappearance of Sharra’s mother from the halfway house. We have been reviewing her phone records and trying to determine where she went.
Sharra immediately becomes uncomfortable.
I already told everyone I don’t know where my mother is. Why are you questioning me?
The detective opens a file and looks directly at her.
Because we discovered something interesting while examining her phone records.
Sharra looks at Larry.
What exactly did you find?
We traced the calls made from your mother’s phone. Her last recorded call was made to Sharra.
Sharra’s eyes widen in shock.
What? She called me?
Yes. According to the records, your mother’s last call was to your phone number.
Larry leans forward, trying to understand the situation.
Officer, just because she called Sharra doesn’t mean Sharra helped her escape. Maybe her mother simply wanted to talk to her.
That’s exactly what we’re trying to establish. However, we have serious questions about the circumstances surrounding that call.
Sharra shakes her head.
I didn’t do anything wrong! She’s my mother. Of course, she would call me!
The detective places the phone records on the table.
Then you shouldn’t have any trouble explaining the call. When did you last speak to your mother?
Sharra hesitates.
I don’t remember the exact time. I’ve been dealing with a lot of things lately.
We need a clear answer, Sharra. Did you know she was planning to leave the halfway house?
Sharra looks down, visibly upset.
I knew she was unhappy there, but I never told her to run away.
Larry watches the detective carefully, realizing the conversation is becoming more serious.
SCENE 4: SHARRA IS ACCUSED
The detective closes the file and turns toward Sharra.
Sharra, based on the information we’ve gathered, we have reason to believe you may have helped your mother escape from the halfway house.
Sharra immediately becomes defensive.
That’s a lie! I didn’t help her escape. Why would you accuse me of something like that?
Your mother’s last phone call was to you. We need to know what you discussed and whether you helped her leave.
She called me because she’s my mother! That doesn’t mean I helped her run away!
Larry stands up from his chair.
Officer, you’re making a serious accusation. You can’t just blame Sharra because her mother called her.
Larry, please sit down. We’re conducting an investigation, and we need everyone to cooperate.
Larry reluctantly sits back down.
Sharra begins to feel overwhelmed. She never imagined that a phone call from her mother could lead to this kind of trouble.
I didn’t know she was going to disappear. I didn’t tell her to leave, and I didn’t help her escape.
Then tell us where she is now.
I don’t know!
The detective looks at another officer standing near the door.
We have enough information to take further action while this investigation continues.
Sharra looks frightened.
What does that mean? What are you going to do?
The officer steps forward and informs her that she is being placed under arrest.
Sharra immediately turns toward Larry.
Larry! They’re arresting me! Please, do something!
Larry jumps to his feet.
Wait a minute! You can’t just arrest her without explaining everything!
We have explained the basis for our investigation. She is being accused of helping her mother escape, and the matter will now proceed through the legal process.
Sharra begins protesting as the officers approach her.
SCENE 5: SHARRA IS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY
Two officers escort Sharra out of the interrogation room. She turns toward Larry, who follows closely behind them.
Larry, please don’t let them do this to me! I haven’t done anything!
Sharra, calm down. I’m right here. I’m going to find out what’s happening.
They’re treating me like I’m a criminal! All because my mother called me!
The officers stop near the booking area.
Sharra, you need to cooperate with us. We’ll explain the next steps in your case.
I want to speak to my lawyer! I didn’t help my mother escape!
Larry steps closer.
You have to let her speak to her lawyer. She has the right to defend herself.
The officer tells Larry that he cannot interfere with the arrest.
Sharra looks at Larry with tears in her eyes.
I can’t believe this is happening to me. I never thought my own mother would put me in this situation.
Larry stands helplessly as the officers take her farther into the station.
SCENE 6: THE POLICE DEMAND THAT SHARRA BRING HER MOTHER BACK
After the initial arrest procedures, Sharra is brought into another room for further questioning. Larry is allowed to wait nearby.
The detective enters and sits across from her.
Sharra, we’re giving you an opportunity to cooperate with this investigation. We need your mother’s location.
I’ve already told you that I don’t know where she is.
Your mother’s disappearance is a serious matter. We need her returned to the halfway house so that the situation can be resolved.
How am I supposed to bring her back if I don’t know where she is?
You were the last person she contacted. We believe you may have information that could help us find her.
