A CINEMATIC DRAMA SCREENPLAY

SCENE 1 β€” INT. DAVE’S HOUSE β€” LIVING ROOM β€” AFTERNOON

Sunlight pours through the large windows as Dave sits comfortably on the couch, checking messages on his phone. Yaya walks into the living room and sits beside him.

YAYA: Dave, can I ask you for something?

Dave looks up and smiles.

DAVE: Of course. What’s going on?

YAYA: Well, I need a little money. There are a few things I want to take care of, and I was wondering if you could help me out.

DAVE: You need some money?

YAYA: Yes! Nothing too crazy. I just want to do a little shopping, handle a few things, and enjoy myself without worrying about every little expense.

DAVE: So, you came all the way over here to ask me for money?

YAYA: Dave, don’t make it sound like that! I’m asking you nicely.

DAVE: I’m just trying to understand the situation.

YAYA: Well, now you understand it. Are you going to help me or not?

Dave shakes his head with a playful smile.

DAVE: You’re something else, Yaya.

YAYA: And you already knew that!

They laugh. Dave reaches toward the side table and picks up a small, elegant envelope.

DAVE: Actually, I might have something better for you.

YAYA: Better than money? What does that mean?

DAVE: Just give me a second.

Dave walks toward his desk while Yaya watches him curiously, wondering what he is planning.

SCENE 2 β€” INT. DAVE’S HOME OFFICE β€” CONTINUOUS

Dave opens a drawer and takes out a presentation envelope containing an American Express card. He smiles before returning to the living room, keeping the envelope behind his back.

YAYA: Why are you smiling like that?

DAVE: What do you mean?

YAYA: You have that look on your face. You know, the look people get when they’re hiding something.

DAVE: Maybe I am hiding something.

YAYA: Dave! Don’t play with me. What is it?

DAVE: Before I show you, I need you to promise me something.

YAYA: Oh, Lord. Here we go. What do I have to promise?

DAVE: Promise me you’ll appreciate the gesture.

YAYA: If you give me what I’m asking for, I promise I’ll appreciate it!

DAVE: That’s not exactly what I said.

YAYA: Well, that’s what you should have said!

Dave laughs and places the envelope in her hands.

DAVE: Here. Open it.

YAYA: What is this?

DAVE: Open it, Yaya.

Yaya carefully opens the envelope and pulls out the card. Her eyes widen as she recognizes the American Express branding.

YAYA: Wait a minute. Is this an American Express card?

DAVE: Yes, it is.

YAYA: Dave! Are you serious right now?

DAVE: I’m serious.

Yaya stares at the card in disbelief. Her face lights up with excitement.

SCENE 3 β€” INT. DAVE’S HOUSE β€” LIVING ROOM β€” MOMENTS LATER

Yaya jumps up from the couch, holding the card carefully between her fingers.

YAYA: Oh, my goodness! I was asking you for some money, and you gave me an American Express card!

DAVE: I thought this might be more convenient for you.

YAYA: Convenient? Dave, this is more than convenient! Look at this!

She examines the card from every angle, still struggling to believe the surprise.

YAYA: I did not expect this. I came here thinking you might give me a little cash, and now look at me!

DAVE: Well, you did say you had a few things to take care of.

YAYA: A few things? Now you’re making me feel like I need to go shopping immediately!

DAVE: I didn’t say that. Don’t put words in my mouth.

YAYA: But you gave me the card!

They laugh. Yaya sits beside Dave, her excitement slowly turning into genuine appreciation.

YAYA: You really didn’t have to do this.

DAVE: I know I didn’t. I wanted to do something nice for you.

YAYA: That actually means a lot to me.

DAVE: Good. That’s what I wanted.

Yaya gives him a warm hug.

YAYA: Thank you, Dave. Seriously. Thank you.

DAVE: You’re welcome, Yaya.

DAVE: You’re already back to looking at that thing?

YAYA: What do you expect me to do? Put it away and pretend I didn’t just receive an American Express card?

DAVE: You’re unbelievable!

YAYA: And you’re generous! Don’t forget that part!

SCENE 4 β€” INT. DAVE’S HOUSE β€” KITCHEN β€” LATER

Yaya follows Dave into the kitchen while he prepares a drink. She keeps glancing at the card with a happy smile.

DAVE: So, have you decided what you’re going to do with it?

YAYA: I have several ideas.

DAVE: Several?

YAYA: Yes, several! I need to get a few things for myself, pick up some things I’ve been putting off, and finally treat myself to something nice.

Dave hands her a glass of water.

DAVE: That sounds reasonable. Just make sure you understand the card’s spending limit and any terms that come with it.

YAYA: Of course. I’m not about to go out there spending without knowing what I’m working with.

DAVE: Good. And remember, depending on how the account is set up, you may need to keep track of the purchases and payments.

YAYA: Dave, I understand. You don’t have to turn my surprise into a financial seminar!

DAVE: I’m just making sure we’re on the same page.

YAYA: We’re on the same page. Now, can we return to the part where you surprised me?

Dave shakes his head, smiling. Yaya takes a sip of water before looking at him more seriously.

YAYA: But honestly, I appreciate that you listened when I told you what I needed.

DAVE: I heard you the first time.

YAYA: Sometimes people hear you without really listening. There’s a difference.

DAVE: That’s true.

YAYA: That’s why I’m happy. It’s not just about the card. It’s about you thinking of me.

DAVE: I’m glad you see it that way.

SCENE 5 β€” INT. DAVE’S HOUSE β€” LIVING ROOM β€” EARLY EVENING

Yaya returns to the living room and begins making a list on her phone. Dave notices her concentration and sits across from her.

DAVE: What are you doing now?

YAYA: Making a list.

DAVE: A list of what?

YAYA: The things I need to buy, the errands I need to run, and everything I’ve been planning to do.

DAVE: You work quickly.

YAYA: When inspiration strikes, you have to move!

YAYA: You know what the funniest part is?

DAVE: What?

YAYA: I almost didn’t ask you. I was sitting there thinking about whether I should bring it up, and then I finally decided to ask.

DAVE: Why were you hesitant?

YAYA: Because sometimes you don’t know how somebody is going to respond. I didn’t want to make things awkward.

DAVE: Well, I’m glad you asked instead of sitting there worrying about it.

YAYA: Me too!

She lifts the card again with a playful grin.

YAYA: Because if I hadn’t asked, I wouldn’t be sitting here holding this!

DAVE: There she goes again.

YAYA: Listen, I’m going to enjoy this moment!

DAVE: Nobody is stopping you.

Yaya returns to her list. The room settles into a comfortable silence, filled with excitement and gratitude.

SCENE 6 β€” INT. DAVE’S HOUSE β€” FRONT DOOR β€” EVENING

Yaya gathers her belongings and carefully puts the American Express card away. Dave walks her to the front door.

DAVE: So, what’s the plan now?

YAYA: First, I’m going to organize everything I need to do. Then I’ll figure out where I’m going and what I need to buy.

DAVE: Sounds like you’ve got everything under control.

YAYA: Of course! Did you think I was going to walk out of here without a plan?

DAVE: With you, I never know what to expect.

YAYA: Well, you should expect me to say thank you one more time.

She gives Dave another warm hug.

YAYA: Thank you for the surprise, Dave. You really made my day.

DAVE: You’re welcome. I’m happy you’re happy.

YAYA: And I hope you know I’m going to remember this!

DAVE: I had a feeling you would.

YAYA: A feeling? Dave, I’m never going to let you forget it!

They laugh together. Yaya steps outside but turns around one last time.

YAYA: Dave?

DAVE: Yes?

YAYA: You definitely understood the assignment today!

DAVE: Go on, Yaya. Get out of here!

YAYA: I’m going! I’m going!

Yaya waves goodbye and walks away smiling. Dave watches her leave, pleased that his surprise brought her so much happiness.

SCENE 7 β€” EXT. OUTSIDE DAVE’S HOUSE β€” EVENING

Yaya walks toward her car and stops beside the driver’s door. She takes out her phone and glances back toward Dave’s house.

YAYA: I came over here asking for a little money, and I left with an American Express card!

She laughs softly, shaking her head in disbelief.

YAYA: I did not see that coming!

She opens the car door, sits inside, and checks that the card is safely tucked away in her bag. Then she starts the car, still smiling.

Her day began with a simple request. It ended with an unexpected surprise, a heartfelt moment, and a memory she would not soon forget.

YAYA: Today was a good day!

She pulls away from the house as the evening sun glows across the street.

FADE OUT.
