A CINEMATIC DRAMA SCREENPLAY
SCENE 1 β LIVING ROOM β LATE AFTERNOON
The house is unusually quiet. Larry stands near the window, scrolling through his phone. Bethany enters slowly, hoping they can finally have an honest conversation.
BETHANY
Larry, can we talk for a minute?
Larry, can we talk for a minute?
LARRY
About what now, Bethany?
About what now, Bethany?
Bethany takes a deep breath. Despite their arguments and disappointments, her feelings for Larry have never completely disappeared.
BETHANY
About us. Every time I try to tell you how I feel, you make me feel like my emotions don’t matter.
About us. Every time I try to tell you how I feel, you make me feel like my emotions don’t matter.
LARRY
Bethany, I don’t want another argument today.
Bethany, I don’t want another argument today.
BETHANY
Neither do I. Larry, I still love you.
Neither do I. Larry, I still love you.
Larry freezes for a moment. Bethany waits, hoping her confession will soften his expression. Instead, his response breaks the silence.
LARRY
Well, I don’t love you, Bethany.
Well, I don’t love you, Bethany.
BETHANY
You don’t love me? After everything we’ve been through together, that’s really how you feel?
You don’t love me? After everything we’ve been through together, that’s really how you feel?
LARRY
I’m not going to lie to you just to make you happy.
I’m not going to lie to you just to make you happy.
BETHANY
I never asked you to lie. I only wanted you to be honest without making me feel like I meant nothing to you.
I never asked you to lie. I only wanted you to be honest without making me feel like I meant nothing to you.
LARRY
You need to stop expecting something from me that I’m not willing to give.
You need to stop expecting something from me that I’m not willing to give.
Bethany wipes her eyes, straightens her shoulders, and looks at him one last time.
BETHANY
All right, Larry. If that’s how you feel, I’ll stop begging you to understand my heart.
All right, Larry. If that’s how you feel, I’ll stop begging you to understand my heart.
She walks toward the staircase. Larry believes the conversation is over, but Bethany is about to make a decision he never expected.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 2 β BETHANY’S BEDROOM β EARLY EVENING
Bethany closes her bedroom door and looks at herself in the mirror. Larry’s words keep replaying in her mind: βI don’t love you, Bethany.β
She opens her wardrobe and chooses a stylish, eye-catching dress. She carefully arranges her hair and adds a few simple accessories.
She isn’t trying to force Larry to love her. She simply wants to feel confident and remember that her worth does not depend on his attention.
BETHANY
You don’t have to keep chasing somebody who refuses to see your worth.
You don’t have to keep chasing somebody who refuses to see your worth.
She picks up her handbag and takes one final look in the mirror.
BETHANY
Tonight, I’m choosing myself.
Tonight, I’m choosing myself.
With a renewed sense of confidence, Bethany walks out of her bedroom.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 3 β THE STAIRCASE β MOMENTS LATER
Larry sits on the living room sofa when he hears footsteps upstairs. He looks toward the staircase, expecting to see Bethany as usual.
LARRY
Bethany, are you still getting ready?
Bethany, are you still getting ready?
Then Bethany appears at the top of the staircase in her stunning dress. She descends confidently, and Larry suddenly stops moving.
His eyes follow her all the way down. He cannot seem to look away. Bethany notices his reaction but refuses to make a big deal out of it.
LARRY
Bethany?
Bethany?
BETHANY
Yes?
Yes?
LARRY
Where are you going?
Where are you going?
BETHANY
Out.
Out.
LARRY
Out where?
Out where?
BETHANY
Why do you suddenly want to know?
Why do you suddenly want to know?
LARRY
Hold on. You look different.
Hold on. You look different.
BETHANY
Different how?
Different how?
LARRY
You look… nice.
You look… nice.
BETHANY
Thank you.
Thank you.
Bethany continues toward the door. Larry watches her, surprised that she doesn’t react to his compliment the way she usually would.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 4 β THE LIVING ROOM β CONTINUOUS
Bethany reaches the front door and checks her handbag for her keys. Larry quickly stands up and approaches her.
LARRY
Bethany, wait a minute. Are you going somewhere special?
Bethany, wait a minute. Are you going somewhere special?
BETHANY
Maybe. It means I have plans.
Maybe. It means I have plans.
LARRY
You didn’t mention any plans earlier.
You didn’t mention any plans earlier.
BETHANY
Earlier, I was too busy telling you that I loved you.
Earlier, I was too busy telling you that I loved you.
Larry’s expression changes. Her words remind him of the painful conversation they just had.
BETHANY
You told me you didn’t love me. So why are you suddenly interested in where I’m going, how I look, and what I’m doing?
You told me you didn’t love me. So why are you suddenly interested in where I’m going, how I look, and what I’m doing?
LARRY
I’m allowed to ask you questions, aren’t I?
I’m allowed to ask you questions, aren’t I?
BETHANY
Of course. But asking questions doesn’t mean you get to control my life.
Of course. But asking questions doesn’t mean you get to control my life.
BETHANY
I’m not going to stand here all night trying to convince you to feel something you don’t feel.
I’m not going to stand here all night trying to convince you to feel something you don’t feel.
LARRY
So you’re just going to walk out like this?
So you’re just going to walk out like this?
BETHANY
Yes, Larry. I’m going to enjoy my evening. You told me how you feel about me. Now I’m showing you that I can respect myself, too.
Yes, Larry. I’m going to enjoy my evening. You told me how you feel about me. Now I’m showing you that I can respect myself, too.
Bethany steps outside and closes the door. Larry remains motionless, staring at the place where she stood.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 5 β LARRY IS LEFT WONDERING
Larry returns to the sofa, but he cannot concentrate on his phone. His mind keeps returning to Bethany’s confident appearance and the way she walked away.
LARRY
What’s going on with her? She was just telling me she loved me, and now she’s acting like she doesn’t care what I think.
What’s going on with her? She was just telling me she loved me, and now she’s acting like she doesn’t care what I think.
He opens their messages and types, βWhere are you going?β Then he deletes it.
He tries again, typing, βYou looked beautiful tonight.β He stares at the words before deleting that message, too.
LARRY
Why am I even thinking about this?
Why am I even thinking about this?
He tosses his phone onto the sofa, but his eyes keep drifting toward the front door. The house feels unusually empty.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 6 β RESTAURANT ENTRANCE β EVENING
Bethany arrives at a charming restaurant to meet her friend Maria. She checks her appearance in the window and smiles for the first time that day.
MARIA
Bethany! Over here! Girl, look at you! You look absolutely stunning!
Bethany! Over here! Girl, look at you! You look absolutely stunning!
BETHANY
Thank you. I needed a change of scenery tonight.
Thank you. I needed a change of scenery tonight.
MARIA
Wait a minute. Something happened, didn’t it?
Wait a minute. Something happened, didn’t it?
BETHANY
Larry and I had another conversation about our relationship. I told him I loved him, and he told me he didn’t love me.
Larry and I had another conversation about our relationship. I told him I loved him, and he told me he didn’t love me.
MARIA
Bethany, I’m sorry. I know how much you’ve been trying to make things work.
Bethany, I’m sorry. I know how much you’ve been trying to make things work.
BETHANY
I can’t keep putting my entire happiness in his hands.
I can’t keep putting my entire happiness in his hands.
MARIA
You deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, regardless of what happens between you two.
You deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, regardless of what happens between you two.
BETHANY
I can love somebody and still recognize that I need to take care of myself.
I can love somebody and still recognize that I need to take care of myself.
The two friends walk inside together. Bethany decides to enjoy her evening rather than spend it worrying about Larry.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 7 β LARRY THINKS ABOUT BETHANY
Back at home, Larry watches television without paying attention. He checks his phone repeatedly, but there is no message from Bethany.
LARRY
She could at least tell me when she’s coming back.
She could at least tell me when she’s coming back.
He stops himself. He was the one who told her that he didn’t love her, yet he still expects her to keep seeking his attention.
In the kitchen, he notices Bethany’s favorite mug beside the sink. He remembers their conversations and the little things she used to do around the house.
LARRY
Maybe I was too harsh with her.
Maybe I was too harsh with her.
He tries to convince himself that he only told the truth. But one question keeps troubling him: if he doesn’t love Bethany, why does it bother him so much that she is enjoying an evening without him?
FADE OUT.
SCENE 8 β RESTAURANT β NIGHT
Bethany and Maria sit near the window. Their conversation turns lighter, and Bethany begins laughing again.
MARIA
I haven’t seen you smile like this in a while.
I haven’t seen you smile like this in a while.
BETHANY
I’ve spent too much time worrying about things I can’t control.
I’ve spent too much time worrying about things I can’t control.
MARIA
And what are you going to do about Larry?
And what are you going to do about Larry?
BETHANY
I’m not going to make a big decision tonight just because I’m hurt. But I’m not going to keep begging him to love me, either.
I’m not going to make a big decision tonight just because I’m hurt. But I’m not going to keep begging him to love me, either.
MARIA
You deserve to have an honest conversation without feeling guilty for what you need.
You deserve to have an honest conversation without feeling guilty for what you need.
Bethany’s phone vibrates. A message from Larry appears: βAre you having a good time?β
MARIA
Is that Larry? What are you going to say?
Is that Larry? What are you going to say?
BETHANY
Yes, I’m enjoying my evening. I’ll talk to you later.
Yes, I’m enjoying my evening. I’ll talk to you later.
She sends the message and puts her phone away.
MARIA
Short and simple.
Short and simple.
BETHANY
Exactly.
Exactly.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 9 β LARRY QUESTIONS HIS FEELINGS
Larry reads Bethany’s brief reply. He expected a longer message, but she has answered politely and ended the conversation.
He types, βYou looked really beautiful before you left,β but hesitates before sending it.
He remembers Bethany’s confession and his own cruelly direct response. He realizes that a compliment cannot erase the hurt caused by his words.
LARRY
What exactly do I want from her?
What exactly do I want from her?
The question hangs in the air. Larry realizes that Bethany’s love cannot be something he accepts when convenient and dismisses when uncomfortable.
Bethany has feelings, needs, and choices of her own. Tonight, she has reminded him of that.
FADE OUT.
SCENE 10 β FRONT ENTRANCE β LATE NIGHT
Bethany returns home, looking tired but peaceful. Larry appears in the hallway, clearly waiting for her.
LARRY
You’re back. Did you have a good time?
You’re back. Did you have a good time?
BETHANY
I did, thank you.
I did, thank you.
LARRY
Bethany, can we talk about what happened earlier?
Bethany, can we talk about what happened earlier?
BETHANY
You mean when I told you I loved you and you told me you didn’t love me?
You mean when I told you I loved you and you told me you didn’t love me?
LARRY
Yes. I guess I didn’t expect you to leave the way you did.
Yes. I guess I didn’t expect you to leave the way you did.
BETHANY
How did you expect me to leave? Crying? Begging you to change your mind?
How did you expect me to leave? Crying? Begging you to change your mind?
LARRY
That’s not what I meant.
That’s not what I meant.
BETHANY
I don’t need to look miserable just because you hurt my feelings. And I don’t need to stop taking care of myself just because you don’t feel the same way about me.
