INT. SHARRA’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – LATE AFTERNOON

The house is quiet.

Sharra sits on the couch, scrolling through her phone.

She looks distracted, unaware that something unexpected is about to happen.

A sudden knock comes from the front door.

Sharra looks up.

SHARRA

Who could that be?

She slowly gets up and walks toward the door.

Another knock.

This time, louder.

Sharra reaches for the handle.

Before she can open it, she hears a familiar voice from outside.

SHARRA’S MOM

Sharra!

Sharra freezes.

Her eyes widen.

SHARRA

Mom?

She quickly opens the door.

Standing outside is her mother.

She looks tired and nervous, as if she has been running for a long time.

Sharra stares at her in disbelief.

SHARRA

Mom… what are you doing here?

Her mother looks around before stepping closer.

SHARRA’S MOM

I didn’t know where else to go.

Sharra looks shocked.

SHARRA

But how did you get here?

Her mother avoids the question.

SHARRA’S MOM

Please, just let me inside.

Sharra hesitates.

Then she steps aside.

Sharra’s mother enters.

Sharra quickly closes the door.

She turns toward her mother.

SHARRA

You can’t just show up here like this.

SHARRA’S MOM

I had no choice.

Sharra studies her mother’s face.

SHARRA

What happened?

Her mother looks toward the window.

SHARRA’S MOM

I needed to see you.

SHARRA

Mom, you’re scaring me.

Her mother reaches for Sharra’s hand.

SHARRA’S MOM

I knew you would help me.

Sharra pulls her hand back slightly.

SHARRA

Help you with what?

Her mother doesn’t answer.

Suddenly—

SIRENS can be heard in the distance.

Sharra turns toward the window.

SHARRA

What is that?

The sirens grow louder.

Her mother immediately becomes nervous.

SHARRA’S MOM

No…

Sharra looks at her.

SHARRA

What?

Her mother moves toward the window.

Outside, a police vehicle stops near the house.

Sharra’s eyes widen.

SHARRA

Police?

Her mother looks terrified.

EXT. SHARRA’S HOUSE – MOMENTS LATER

A police vehicle stops outside.

Two officers step out.

They look toward the house.

Sharra and her mother can be seen through the window.

The officers approach the front door.

One officer knocks.

KNOCK. KNOCK.

Sharra looks at her mother.

SHARRA

Why are the police here?

Her mother remains silent.

SHARRA

Mom, what did you do?

Her mother whispers.

SHARRA’S MOM

Don’t say anything.

Sharra takes a step back.

Another knock comes.

POLICE OFFICER

Police! Please open the door.

Sharra looks completely stunned.

INT. SHARRA’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Sharra looks between her mother and the front door.

SHARRA

You need to tell me what’s happening.

Her mother shakes her head.

SHARRA’S MOM

I can’t.

SHARRA

You can’t?

Sharra’s voice becomes nervous.

SHARRA

Mom, the police are standing at my door!

Her mother looks toward the back of the house.

SHARRA’S MOM

I don’t want to go back.

Sharra finally understands.

SHARRA

You ran away?

Her mother says nothing.

Sharra covers her mouth in shock.

SHARRA

Oh my God…

The knocking continues.

POLICE OFFICER

Ma’am, open the door.

Sharra takes a deep breath.

She walks toward the door.

INT. SHARRA’S HOUSE – FRONT DOOR – CONTINUOUS

Sharra slowly opens the door.

Two officers stand outside.

POLICE OFFICER

Are you Sharra?

Sharra nods nervously.

SHARRA

Yes.

POLICE OFFICER

We’re looking for your mother.

Sharra looks back into the house.

Her mother is standing in the hallway.

The officer notices her.

POLICE OFFICER

Ma’am, please step outside.

Sharra turns toward her mother.

SHARRA

Mom…

Her mother slowly walks forward.

SHARRA’S MOM

I’m sorry.

Sharra looks confused.

SHARRA

Sorry for what?

The officer speaks calmly.

POLICE OFFICER

Ma’am, you’re being taken into custody.

Sharra’s face goes pale.

SHARRA

Wait!

She steps forward.

SHARRA

Can you please tell me what’s happening?

The officer looks at her.

POLICE OFFICER

We can explain what we can, but right now we need her to come with us.

Sharra looks at her mother.

EXT. SHARRA’S HOUSE – CONTINUOUS

Sharra’s mother steps outside.

The officers escort her toward the police vehicle.

Sharra follows them to the porch.

SHARRA

Mom!

Her mother turns around.

SHARRA’S MOM

Take care of yourself.

SHARRA

Why didn’t you tell me?

Her mother looks emotional.

SHARRA’S MOM

I was afraid.

The officers continue walking.

Sharra stands frozen.

SHARRA

Mom!

Her mother gets into the police vehicle.

The door closes.

Sharra watches helplessly.

INT. POLICE VEHICLE – CONTINUOUS

Sharra’s mother sits quietly.

She looks through the window at Sharra.

Sharra remains standing outside.

Their eyes meet.

The vehicle begins to move.

The police vehicle drives away.

Sharra watches until it disappears.

She slowly walks back inside.

She closes the door.

Silence fills the house.

Sharra sits on the couch.

She looks completely overwhelmed.

Her phone rings.

She ignores it.

It rings again.

She finally answers.

SHARRA

Hello?

A concerned voice speaks on the other end.

Sharra listens.

SHARRA

The police just took my mom.

She wipes away a tear.

SHARRA

I don’t even know what happened.

She looks toward the front door.

SHARRA

She just showed up, and then suddenly the police were here.

Sharra pauses.

SHARRA

Something isn’t right.

INT. SHARRA’S HOUSE – KITCHEN – LATER

Sharra walks into the kitchen.

She places both hands on the counter.

Her mind races.

She remembers her mother’s nervous expression.

The sirens.

The police officers.

The way her mother said she had no choice.

Sharra picks up her phone.

She starts searching for answers.

She looks toward the window.
