Bethany’s Night of Trouble

Bethany’s Night of Trouble

Larry Realizes She Needs Proper Care

SCENE 1 — Bedroom — Late Night

The house is quiet. Soft moonlight comes through the curtains.

Bethany lies in bed. She feels uncomfortable and keeps moving.

She opens her eyes. Something feels wrong.

She tries to sit up and feels pain.

Bethany

Larry…

She reaches for him. Larry is sleeping deeply.

Bethany

Larry, wake up.

Larry does not move. Bethany looks at him with worry.

Bethany

Larry… please wake up. I don’t feel right.

Larry turns over in his sleep. He does not know she is struggling.

Bethany’s eyes fill with tears. Her hands are shaking.

Bethany

Why won’t you wake up?

She calls his name one more time. Nothing happens.

She gives up and lies back down, very tired.

SCENE 2 — Bedroom — Early Morning

Sunlight fills the room. Larry wakes up and stretches.

He looks at Bethany. She is very still.

Larry

Bethany?

No answer. Larry sits up quickly.

Larry

Baby?

Bethany slowly opens her eyes.

Bethany

Larry…

Her voice is weak. Larry becomes worried at once.

Larry

What’s wrong?

Bethany

I was trying to wake you up all night.

Larry

All night?

Bethany

My condition got worse. I kept calling your name, but you didn’t wake up.

Larry feels guilty. He was sleeping while she needed help.

Larry

Why didn’t you call somebody?

Bethany

I tried to wake you first.

Larry

Come on. We’re going to the hospital.

Bethany tries to stand. Larry helps her quickly.

SCENE 3 — Car — Morning

Larry drives carefully but fast. Bethany looks very tired.

Larry

You should have told me how bad it was.

Bethany

I did.

Larry looks down. He knows she is right.

Larry

I’m sorry. I should have been awake.

Bethany

I just need you to take care of me, Larry.

Larry

I will.

SCENE 4 — Hospital — Doctor’s Room

Larry sits next to Bethany. The doctor looks at her papers.

Doctor

Larry, I need you to understand something.

Larry

What’s going on?

Doctor

Bethany needs proper care while she recovers.

Doctor

If she does not get the care she needs, it can cause problems after surgery.

Larry

Complications?

Doctor

Yes. She needs rest, medicine, good food, and someone to watch her closely.

Doctor

Recovery is just as important as the surgery itself.

Larry

So what do I need to do?

Doctor

Take her care seriously. Watch for any warning signs. Call us if something feels wrong.

Larry understands. He cannot leave her alone.

Larry

I’m not letting you go through this by yourself.

Bethany

Promise?

Larry

Promise.

SCENE 5 — Hospital Hallway

Larry walks outside the room. He looks tired and worried.

Then Charlotte arrives. She sees Larry and walks to him.

Charlotte

Larry? What happened?

Larry

Bethany got worse last night.

Charlotte

Is she okay?

Larry

The doctor says she needs proper care. If she does not get it, her recovery can be affected.

Charlotte

What do you need?

Larry looks down. His pride is gone.

Larry

Charlotte… I’m sorry for the way I treated you.

Charlotte

For what?

Larry

I was angry. I thought I could handle everything myself. But I can’t do this alone.

Larry

I need help taking care of Bethany.

Charlotte

You want me to help?

Larry

I’m asking you. Please.

Charlotte

Alright. I’m not going to turn my back on someone who needs help.

Larry

Thank you.

SCENE 6 — Hospital Room — Afternoon

Charlotte walks into the room. Bethany looks surprised.

Bethany

Charlotte?

Charlotte

Hey.

Bethany

What is she doing here?

Larry

I asked her to come. The doctor said you need someone around you.

Charlotte

I’m here to help. I’m not here to cause problems.

Charlotte

I’m here because you need care.

Bethany

I don’t want everybody fighting because of me.

Larry

Nobody is fighting. We’re just trying to make sure you’re okay.

Charlotte

Exactly.

Bethany feels a little better. For the first time, she does not feel alone.

SCENE 7 — Hospital Room — Evening

The room is calm. Larry and Charlotte take care of small things for Bethany.

Bethany

I didn’t think Charlotte would actually come.

Charlotte

Neither did I.

Larry

Well, she came.

Bethany

You really were scared, weren’t you?

Larry

Yes. When the doctor told me what could happen, it scared me.

Larry

I don’t want to take you for granted anymore.

Bethany

Then don’t.

Larry

I won’t.

SCENE 8 — Hospital Room — Night

The lights are soft. Bethany is resting. Larry sits beside her. Charlotte sits nearby.

Larry

Thank you for coming.

Charlotte

You don’t have to thank me.

Larry

I do. Tonight showed me something.

Larry

Family is not about who is right or wrong. Sometimes it is just about showing up when someone needs you.

Charlotte

Then let’s make sure she gets better.

Larry

Together.

Bethany opens her eyes for a moment. She sees Larry and Charlotte sitting quietly.

No arguing. No drama. Just people taking care of her.

She closes her eyes again with a small smile.

Larry stays beside his wife. Charlotte stays nearby.

Larry finally understands — loving Bethany means being there when she needs him most.
