Brooke’s First Love Wasn’t Going According to Plan
1. The Packed Suitcase
Brooke had spent months believing that her future was already written.
College. A new chapter. New experiences. New responsibilities.
And somewhere inside every plan she had made, there was Isaiah.
She never said it out loud too often, but in her mind, she had already imagined the two of them growing together. She thought first love was supposed to become forever.
But life had other plans.
That afternoon, Brooke stood in the hallway with her suitcase beside her.
Steevie stared at her in confusion.
“You’re leaving already?”
Brooke nodded.
“I have to. In a few hours.”
Steevie folded her arms.
“Brooke, what’s really going on?”
“Nothing.”
Steevie shook her head.
“Don’t do that. You don’t pack your whole life into a suitcase because nothing is wrong.”
Brooke looked away.
Her eyes were tired, but she refused to cry.
Finally, she whispered, “Isaiah.”
Steevie sighed.
“So this is about him.”
2. Unspoken Expectations
Brooke’s voice became defensive.
“He changed.”
“No,” Steevie replied. “Something changed between you two.”
Brooke looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Steevie hesitated before saying what Brooke didn’t want to hear.
“Sometimes, Brooke, the way you talk about your future can make somebody feel like they don’t belong in it.”
Brooke froze.
“I never told Isaiah he wasn’t good enough.”
“You didn’t have to,” Steevie said. “Sometimes people hear things differently from how we mean them.”
Brooke remembered all those conversations.
College applications.
Career plans.
The places she wanted to travel.
The life she wanted to build.
She had been excited. She thought Isaiah would be excited with her.
But maybe, somewhere along the way, Isaiah had started feeling like he was standing outside the future she had designed.
Steevie continued quietly.
“Maybe he felt like he couldn’t measure up. Maybe he started looking for somebody who made him feel important.”
Brooke’s face fell.
“So you’re saying this is my fault?”
“No. I’m saying relationships aren’t always about finding someone to blame.”
That sentence hit Brooke harder than anything else.
She sat down.
“I thought Isaiah was going to be part of my life.”
Steevie looked at her sympathetically.
“You thought he was going to be your forever.”
Brooke nodded.
“He was my first real love.”
Steevie sat beside her.
“And that’s why this hurts so much.”
For Brooke, it wasn’t just about losing Isaiah.
It was about losing the future she had imagined with him.
3. Confronting the Hard Truth
Then Sharra walked into the room.
She immediately noticed Brooke’s suitcase.
“What is going on?”
Brooke wiped her eyes.
“I’m leaving.”
Sharra looked at Steevie.
Then back at Brooke.
“Leaving because of Isaiah?”
Brooke didn’t answer.
Sharra sighed.
“Baby, listen to me.”
Her voice was firm, almost demanding, but there was no cruelty in it.
“A man is going to make his own choices. You cannot build his life for him.”
Brooke looked down.
“But I thought we were building a future together.”
“You were building the future you wanted,” Sharra replied. “That doesn’t mean he was building the exact same one.”
Silence filled the room.
Sharra continued.
“You have dreams. He has dreams. If those dreams stop fitting together, you can’t force them to match.”
Brooke finally let a tear fall.
“What if he found someone else?”
Sharra didn’t soften the truth.
“Then you’re going to have to accept that.”
Brooke closed her eyes.
The words hurt.
But somewhere deep inside, she knew Sharra was right.
Steevie looked at Brooke.
“I tried to tell you. Sometimes you have to learn certain lessons yourself.”
4. Losing an Expectation
Brooke gave a small, broken smile.
“I really thought we were going to get married someday.”
Sharra shook her head gently.
“Life doesn’t promise us that the person we love first will be the person we love forever.”
Brooke stared at the suitcase.
For the first time, she understood something painful.
She hadn’t just lost a relationship.
She had lost an expectation.
And those two things weren’t the same.
Her first love had taught her something no college application ever could:
You can plan your future down to the smallest detail—and still wake up one day realizing somebody you counted on chose a different road.
5. The Next Chapter
Brooke stood up.
She picked up her suitcase.
But this time, she wasn’t running away from Isaiah.
She was walking toward the life she had forgotten to choose for herself.
Sharra watched her carefully.
“Where are you going?”
Brooke took a deep breath.
“College.”
Steevie smiled.
“And Isaiah?”
Brooke paused.
Her eyes filled with tears again.
“I don’t know.”
Then she walked toward the door.
For the first time, she wasn’t pretending she knew how the story would end.
She was finally ready to let life write the next chapter.
