WHEN ERNESTINE WARNS AMBER NOT TO SIGN THE PAPERS
INT. AMBER’S LIVING ROOM – LATE AFTERNOON
Golden sunlight filters through the curtains.
The room is quiet, but the tension between the two women is impossible to miss.
AMBER sits on the edge of the couch.
Several papers rest on the coffee table in front of her.
She stares at them.
Her expression is uncertain.
ERNESTINE sits beside her, watching carefully.
She notices the hesitation in Amber’s eyes.
Ernestine leans forward.
ERNESTINE
Amber, I need you to listen to me carefully.
Amber looks up.
AMBER
I’m listening.
Ernestine points toward the papers.
ERNESTINE
Whatever happens, you should not sign those papers.
Amber looks down again.
ERNESTINE
Not today.
Not tomorrow.
Not under pressure.
Not because somebody is rushing you.
Not tomorrow.
Not under pressure.
Not because somebody is rushing you.
You need to think about what this decision means for your future.
Amber slowly picks up the papers.
She looks at the first page.
Then she puts them back down.
AMBER
You really think I shouldn’t sign them?
ERNESTINE
I absolutely do.
A long silence follows.
Amber takes a deep breath.
ERNESTINE
Sometimes people will make you feel like you have to make a decision immediately.
But you don’t.
You have the right to stop.
You have the right to ask questions.
And most importantly, you have the right to protect yourself.
You have the right to ask questions.
And most importantly, you have the right to protect yourself.
Amber listens carefully.
Her expression begins to change.
She looks less confused.
More determined.
AMBER
I understand what you’re saying.
ERNESTINE
Good.
Because I don’t want you waking up later and wishing you had listened to your own heart.
Amber looks toward the window.
For a moment, she says nothing.
Then she turns back toward Ernestine.
AMBER
You know what?
AMBER
I think you’re right.
Ernestine watches her closely.
AMBER
I’m not going to sign the papers.
Ernestine exhales.
The tension in her shoulders finally begins to disappear.
ERNESTINE
That’s what I wanted to hear.
Amber gives her a small smile.
AMBER
Thank you for being honest with me.
ERNESTINE
That’s what friends are supposed to do.
Amber looks down at the papers one more time.
She pushes them farther away.
AMBER
I’m done letting other people make decisions for me.
ERNESTINE
That’s the Amber I know.
Amber laughs softly.
But the moment doesn’t last long.
Her expression becomes thoughtful again.
She sits back against the couch.
AMBER
Actually…
Ernestine looks at her.
ERNESTINE
What?
Amber takes a moment before speaking.
AMBER
I’ve been thinking about something for a while.
ERNESTINE
What have you been thinking about?
Amber smiles.
There is something different in her eyes now.
Something hopeful.
AMBER
I’m about to start my own podcast.
Ernestine freezes.
Her smile slowly disappears.
Not because she’s upset.
Because the words hit her emotionally.
ERNESTINE
Your own podcast?
Amber nods.
AMBER
Yes.
I’ve been thinking about it for a long time.
I want something that’s mine.
Something I can build from the ground up.
Ernestine stares at her.
The room suddenly feels much quieter.
ERNESTINE
Amber…
Amber smiles.
AMBER
I know it sounds like a big step.
ERNESTINE
No.
It’s more than a big step.
Ernestine looks away.
Her eyes begin to water.
Amber notices.
AMBER
Are you okay?
Ernestine quickly wipes beneath one eye.
ERNESTINE
Yeah.
I’m okay.
ERNESTINE
It’s just…
She struggles to find the right words.
ERNESTINE
I’ve watched you go through so much.
Amber’s smile fades.
ERNESTINE
I’ve watched people tell you what you should do.
What you shouldn’t do.
Who you should trust.
What decisions you should make.
And now you’re sitting here telling me you’re going to create something for yourself.
ERNESTINE
I’m proud of you.
Amber becomes emotional.
She reaches over and gently takes Ernestine’s hand.
AMBER
You really are?
ERNESTINE
Of course I am.
Ernestine squeezes Amber’s hand.
ERNESTINE
You don’t understand how much it means to hear you say that.
AMBER
Why?
ERNESTINE
Because I want you to remember who you are.
A beat.
ERNESTINE
You’re not just somebody’s friend.
You’re not just somebody’s partner.
You’re not just somebody who has to react to everyone else’s decisions.
You’re Amber.
And you deserve to have something that belongs to you.
Amber’s eyes fill with emotion.
AMBER
That’s exactly how I’ve been feeling.
ERNESTINE
Then do it.
AMBER
I will.
She looks toward the papers.
Then toward Ernestine.
AMBER
Those papers aren’t going to control my future.
ERNESTINE
Exactly.
Amber sits up straighter.
Her confidence is returning.
AMBER
I want my podcast to be about real conversations.
Real stories.
Things people are afraid to talk about.
ERNESTINE
Then make it honest.
AMBER
I will.
ERNESTINE
And don’t let anybody convince you that you can’t do it.
AMBER
I won’t.
ERNESTINE
Do you already have a name for it?
Amber laughs.
AMBER
Not yet.
ERNESTINE
Then that’s your first assignment.
Amber laughs again.
AMBER
You already sound like my producer.
ERNESTINE
Somebody has to keep you organized.
They both laugh.
The heavy tension that filled the room earlier has disappeared.
Amber picks up her phone.
She opens her notes app.
AMBER
Okay.
Podcast name.
Topics.
First episode.
Guest ideas.

She starts typing.
Ernestine watches her.
A proud smile appears on her face.
ERNESTINE
Look at you.
AMBER
What?
ERNESTINE
Five minutes ago, you were worried about those papers.
Now you’re planning your future.
AMBER
Maybe I needed someone to remind me that I still have one.
Ernestine becomes emotional again.
She reaches over and hugs Amber.
Amber hugs her back.
For a moment, neither woman says anything.
The silence says everything.
Eventually, Ernestine pulls back.
ERNESTINE
Promise me something.
AMBER
What?
ERNESTINE
Promise me you’ll never make a major decision just because you’re afraid of what somebody else might think.
AMBER
I promise.
ERNESTINE
And if you ever forget…
Ernestine points toward herself.
ERNESTINE
Call me.
AMBER
I will.
Ernestine stands.
Amber stands with her.
Ernestine looks at the papers one final time.
