Sharra’s House — Morning
Soft morning sunlight spills through the windows. The house is unusually quiet. Larry walks toward Sharra’s front door, holding a small bag in one hand. He looks calm, completely unaware of what is waiting for him inside.
He reaches the door. Larry knocks. No answer. He waits for a moment. Then he tries the handle. The door slowly opens. Larry steps inside. He takes one step forward… then suddenly stops. His expression changes. His eyes widen.
Across the living room, Sharra is sitting on the sofa with her old ex. The two are caught up in an emotional moment, kissing each other. Larry stands frozen in the doorway. He can’t believe what he’s seeing.
LARRY: Sharra…?
His voice is barely above a whisper. Sharra immediately pulls away. She looks toward the doorway. Her face goes pale.
SHARRA: Larry?
Larry doesn’t move. He looks from Sharra to her ex, trying to process what just happened. The room falls completely silent. Her ex slowly stands from the sofa. Larry’s grip tightens around the bag in his hand.
LARRY: What… what am I looking at right now?
Sharra quickly gets to her feet. She looks nervous.
SHARRA: Larry, wait. It’s not what you think.
Larry gives a short, stunned laugh. He shakes his head.
LARRY: Not what I think?
He looks back at the sofa. Then at Sharra.
LARRY: I literally just opened the door and saw you kissing him.
Sharra struggles to find the right words. Her old ex remains standing nearby, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
SHARRA: I can explain.
Larry takes a slow breath. His shock begins turning into disappointment.
LARRY: Then explain.
Sharra looks down for a moment.
SHARRA: He came over this morning. We started talking about the past…
She pauses.
SHARRA: And things just got complicated.
Larry stares at her.
LARRY: Complicated?
He slowly puts the bag down.
LARRY: Sharra, there is nothing complicated about what I just saw.
Sharra takes a step toward him. Larry instinctively takes a step back. The distance between them suddenly feels much bigger than the living room.
SHARRA: Larry, please don’t leave like this.
Larry looks at her with disbelief.
LARRY: What do you want me to do?
Sharra’s eyes become emotional.
SHARRA: Just listen to me.
Larry remains silent. Her ex finally speaks.
SHARRA’S EX: Larry, I didn’t come here to cause problems.
Larry turns toward him. His expression is serious.
LARRY: Then why are you here?
The ex looks toward Sharra. Sharra doesn’t answer. Larry notices the silence. That silence tells him more than words could. He slowly shakes his head.
LARRY: Okay.
Sharra looks worried.
SHARRA: Larry…
Larry raises his hand, asking her to stop.
LARRY: I don’t need to hear anything else right now.
He turns toward the door. Sharra quickly follows him.
SHARRA: Please. Don’t walk away.
Larry stops. For a moment, he doesn’t turn around. The room is completely silent. Finally, Larry looks back.
LARRY: I came here this morning thinking I was walking into your house.
He pauses. His voice becomes quieter.
LARRY: I didn’t know I was walking into something I was never supposed to see.
Sharra looks down. Larry opens the door. Sunlight falls across the floor. He steps outside. Sharra remains standing in the doorway.
SHARRA: Larry, I’m sorry.
Larry stops for a second. He doesn’t turn around.
LARRY: I just need some time.
He walks away. Sharra watches him disappear down the driveway. She slowly closes the door. Inside, her old ex remains silent. Sharra looks back toward the sofa. The moment that had seemed emotional only minutes earlier now feels completely different.
Outside, Larry continues walking. His face is still filled with disbelief. He looks back at Sharra’s house one final time. Then he turns away. Larry realizes that the morning he expected to be ordinary has changed everything.
Some doors, once opened, can never be closed the same way again.
