Early Morning — Outside the House
The morning is quiet. Soft sunlight falls across the front yard as Bethany steps outside, still unaware that her entire morning is about to change. She walks toward the courier box near the entrance. Bethany casually checks inside. She suddenly stops. An envelope is sitting inside. Her expression changes.
BETHANY: What is this?
She carefully picks up the envelope and looks at the front. Her eyes move across the writing. She opens it. Her face instantly goes pale. Inside are official divorce papers.
Bethany stares at the papers in disbelief. She reads the names again. And again. Her hands begin to tremble.
BETHANY: Larry…?
She looks around, completely confused. For a moment, she cannot believe what she is seeing. Then anger replaces the shock. Bethany quickly closes the envelope. She storms toward the house.
Living Room — Moments Later
Larry is inside the house, calmly going about his morning. He has no idea what is coming. The front door suddenly opens. Bethany walks in holding the envelope. Her face is filled with anger and confusion.
BETHANY: Larry!
Larry looks up.
LARRY: What happened?
Bethany walks straight toward him. She holds the envelope up.
BETHANY: What is this?
Larry looks at the envelope. His expression immediately changes. He recognizes it. For a second, he says nothing. Bethany notices his reaction.
BETHANY: Why are you looking at it like that?
Larry slowly stands.
LARRY: Bethany, wait…
BETHANY: Wait for what?
She opens the envelope and pulls out the papers. She holds them in front of him.
BETHANY: These are divorce papers!
Larry freezes. Bethany’s voice becomes more emotional.
BETHANY: Are you planning to divorce me?
Larry looks completely caught off guard. He never expected Bethany to see the papers like this.
LARRY: I… I can explain.
Bethany shakes her head.
BETHANY: Explain what?
She points at the papers.
BETHANY: Your name is right here.
Then she points to her own name.
BETHANY: And my name is right here!
Larry takes a breath. He knows there is no way to hide it anymore.
The Truth Comes Out
Bethany steps closer. Her eyes remain fixed on Larry.
BETHANY: You were really going to divorce me?
Larry looks away for a moment.
LARRY: That’s not how this was supposed to happen.
Bethany immediately reacts.
BETHANY: Then how was it supposed to happen?
Larry struggles to find the right words.
LARRY: My attorney was supposed to come over and give me the papers personally.
Bethany looks confused.
BETHANY: Then why were they in our courier box?
Larry looks toward the envelope. He realizes exactly what happened. The papers were delivered to the house before his attorney ever arrived.
LARRY: I didn’t know they were going to send them through the courier.
Bethany stares at him.
BETHANY: So you admit these are real?
Larry doesn’t answer immediately. That silence tells Bethany everything. Her expression falls.
BETHANY: Oh my God…
She takes a step backward.
BETHANY: You really were going to divorce me.
Larry tries to respond.
LARRY: Bethany, listen to me.
BETHANY: No!
She raises the papers.
BETHANY: You already made the decision!
Larry shakes his head.
LARRY: It isn’t that simple.
BETHANY: It looks pretty simple to me!
A tense silence fills the room.
Larry Gets Caught
Larry walks toward Bethany.
LARRY: I never wanted you to find out like this.
Bethany looks at him in disbelief.
BETHANY: So you were planning to keep it from me?
Larry pauses. He knows he has been caught.
LARRY: I was trying to figure everything out first.
Bethany’s eyes fill with disappointment.
BETHANY: You could have told me.
Larry looks down.
LARRY: I know.
Bethany slowly looks back at the divorce papers. The reality finally sinks in. This isn’t a misunderstanding. The papers are real. And Larry had already taken steps toward ending their marriage.
BETHANY: All this time…
She looks at Larry.
BETHANY: You were thinking about leaving me?
Larry remains silent.
BETHANY: I can’t believe you.
She turns away. Larry watches her, realizing how badly the situation has exploded.
Bethany’s Realization
Bethany walks toward the window. She looks outside, trying to process everything. The envelope is still in her hand. She slowly looks down at the papers.
BETHANY: So that’s why everything has felt different lately.
Larry doesn’t respond.
BETHANY: You weren’t just angry.
She looks back at him.
BETHANY: You were preparing to end this marriage.
Larry takes a deep breath.
LARRY: Bethany…
She interrupts him.
BETHANY: Don’t.
Her voice is quieter now. The anger has turned into disappointment.
BETHANY: I found out from a courier box, Larry.
Larry looks at her.
BETHANY: Not from you.
A long silence follows. Larry realizes there is nothing he can say that will make the moment disappear. Bethany folds the papers back into the envelope. She looks at Larry one final time.
BETHANY: I need to know the truth.
Larry slowly nods.
LARRY: You deserve the truth.
Bethany waits. Larry looks at the envelope in her hands. The room becomes completely silent. Bethany has finally realized that Larry may truly be preparing to divorce her. And now, she needs to know why.
The camera slowly pulls back. Bethany stands on one side of the room. Larry stands on the other. Between them sits the envelope that changed everything.
Some truths arrive by mail before they ever arrive in words — and by then, it’s already too late to soften them.
