Bethany Came Home to Divorce Papers
But What She Found Hidden Inside Changed Everything
The Unexpected Return
Bethany had spent several exhausting days in the hospital. When she was finally discharged, all she wanted was to get home, take a long shower, and sleep in her own bed.
Before leaving, Larry had promised everything was under control. Their child needed to reach college before Monday, so Larry had packed the luggage and planned to leave town with the child while Bethany rested at home.
“Don’t worry about anything,” Larry had told her. “I’ll handle the college trip. You just get some rest.”
Bethany smiled weakly.
“For once, I’m actually going to listen to you.”
Larry laughed. “Good. Because you are terrible at resting.”
“And you’re terrible at admitting when you’re wrong.”
“That sounds like a conversation for another day.”
Bethany didn’t realize how important those words would become.
The Knock
Hours later, Bethany finally arrived home.
The house was strangely quiet.
She put her bag down and looked around.
“Larry?”
No answer.
She smiled to herself.
“Of course. He’s already gone.”
She walked toward the kitchen when suddenly—
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Bethany stopped.
“Who could that be?”
Another knock came.
She slowly walked toward the front door and opened it.
A delivery person stood outside holding a large sealed envelope.
“Bethany?”
“Yes?”
“This is for you. I need your signature.”
Bethany stared at the envelope.
“Who sent it?”
The delivery person checked the information.
“It says Larry.”
Bethany’s smile disappeared.
“Larry sent this?”
“That’s what the paperwork says.”
She signed.
The Divorce Papers
Bethany closed the door and carried the envelope to the kitchen table.
She stared at it for several seconds.
“Why would Larry send me legal documents?”
She opened the envelope.
The first page made her completely still.
DIVORCE PETITION.
Bethany blinked.
“No…”
She read the first page again.
“Larry filed for divorce?”
Her hands began to shake.
“After everything we’ve been through?”
She immediately grabbed her phone and called him.
Larry answered after several rings.
“Hey. You made it home?”
Bethany’s voice was cold.
“Did you send me something?”
There was a pause.
“What do you mean?”
“A legal envelope.”
Silence.
Bethany looked at the papers again.
“Larry, did you file for divorce?”
Another long silence.
Then Larry said quietly:
“Bethany, listen to me. Where are you right now?”
“At home.”
“Are you alone?”
Bethany frowned.
“Why are you asking me that?”
The Hidden Document
Bethany looked back at the envelope.
Something was sticking out from underneath the divorce papers.
“Wait.”
She pulled out another folded document.
There was no official logo on it.
At the top, handwritten in black ink, were five words:
“DO NOT SHOW THIS TO LARRY.”
Bethany’s heart began pounding.
“Larry…”
“What?” he asked.
“There’s another document.”
Larry’s voice suddenly changed.
“Bethany, don’t open it.”
She froze.
“Why?”
“Just put it down.”
“You know what’s inside.”
“Bethany, please.”
She slowly unfolded the paper.
Her eyes moved across the first line.
Then the second.
Her face lost all its color.
“Larry…”
“What did you see?”
Bethany couldn’t answer.
She kept staring at the document.
There was a date on it.
A date from three months earlier.
A date Larry had never mentioned.
The Question
Bethany slowly raised the phone to her ear.
“Larry…”
“I’m here.”
“Why is my name on this document?”
Larry didn’t answer.
“Larry, what happened three months ago?”
Still nothing.
Bethany looked at the document one more time.
Then she whispered:
“Larry… what have you been hiding from me?”
On the other end of the phone, Larry finally spoke.
“Bethany…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“You were never supposed to find that.”
Bethany’s eyes widened.
She looked down at the final page.
And before she could read another word…
THE CALL ENDED.
