DAVE FINALLY UNDERSTANDS AMBER
DAVE FINALLY UNDERSTANDS AMBER
INT. DAVE’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – EVENING

The house is quiet.

Warm evening light filters through the windows.

DAVE sits on the couch, staring at his phone.

A small gift box rests on the coffee table.

He looks at it proudly.

A smile slowly appears on his face.

The front door opens.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER walks inside.

She notices the gift box immediately.

Her expression changes.

She looks at her father.

Then at the box.

She already knows what he is thinking.

She walks closer.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Dad… what is that?

Dave picks up the box.

His smile grows.

DAVE
It’s a gift for Amber.

His daughter stops.

She looks at him in disbelief.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
A gift?

Dave nods.

DAVE
Yeah.

He gently places the box back on the table.

DAVE
I thought she would like it.

His daughter takes a deep breath.

She sits across from him.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Dad, why are you buying Amber gifts?

Dave looks confused.

DAVE
Because she deserves something nice.

His daughter shakes her head.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
You still don’t understand, do you?

Dave stares at her.

DAVE
Understand what?

She leans forward.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Amber is not coming here because she wants your gifts.

Dave’s expression slowly changes.

DAVE
Then why does she keep coming?

His daughter looks directly into his eyes.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
She’s coming because she wants to eat.

Dave blinks.

For a moment, he says nothing.

DAVE
What?

His daughter sighs.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
You heard me.

She points toward the gift box.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
You keep thinking she comes here because she cares about you.

She pauses.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
But Dad… she has never asked you for a gift.

Dave looks down.

His confidence begins to disappear.

DAVE
Maybe she’s just shy.

His daughter gives him a disappointed look.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
No.

She shakes her head.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
You’re making excuses because you like her.

Dave looks away.

His daughter continues.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Every time Amber comes here, what does she do?

Dave remains silent.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
She sits at the table.

She eats.

She talks for a little while.

And then she leaves.

Dave slowly looks back at her.

DAVE
That doesn’t mean she doesn’t like me.

His daughter stands.

She walks toward the kitchen.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Then ask yourself one question.

Dave watches her.

DAVE
What question?

She turns around.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Has Amber ever come here just to spend time with you?

Dave opens his mouth.

Nothing comes out.

His daughter waits.

The silence becomes uncomfortable.

Dave remembers.

Amber arriving.

Amber asking what was for dinner.

Amber complimenting the food.

Amber leaving shortly after eating.

His smile disappears.

DAVE
I…

He struggles to answer.

DAVE
I never thought about it that way.

His daughter walks back toward him.

Her voice softens.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
That’s why I’m telling you now.

Dave looks at the gift box.

He slowly picks it up.

DAVE
I was going to give this to her tonight.

His daughter gently takes the box from his hands.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Don’t.

Dave looks surprised.

DAVE
Why?
DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Because you’ll only make yourself feel worse.

Dave sits back.

His eyes become distant.

DAVE
Maybe I misunderstood everything.

His daughter sits beside him.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Dad, there’s nothing wrong with caring about someone.

She pauses.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
But you shouldn’t have to buy their attention.

Dave looks down.

Her words hit him deeply.

DAVE
You really think she’s using me?

His daughter hesitates.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
I don’t know what’s in Amber’s heart.

She looks at him.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
But I know what I’ve seen.

Dave nods slowly.

DAVE
And what have you seen?
DAVE’S DAUGHTER
I’ve seen you getting excited every time she comes over.

She pauses.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
And I’ve seen you disappointed every time she leaves.

Dave looks away.

His eyes become emotional.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
You deserve someone who comes because they want to see you.

Dave swallows hard.

DAVE
Not because there’s food on the table.
DAVE’S DAUGHTER
Exactly.

The room falls silent.

Suddenly, the doorbell rings.

Both of them look toward the front door.

Dave’s expression changes.

He knows who it is.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
That’s probably Amber.

Dave slowly stands.

He looks at the gift box one last time.

Then he places it inside a drawer.

He walks toward the door.

His daughter follows.

Dave opens the door.

AMBER stands outside with a bright smile.

AMBER
Hi, Dave.

Dave looks at her.

For the first time, he studies her carefully.

DAVE
Hi, Amber.

Amber looks past him.

AMBER
What are you having for dinner?

Dave’s daughter watches silently from behind him.

Dave’s face changes.

The question confirms everything his daughter just told him.

AMBER
I was hoping you had something good tonight.

Dave takes a breath.

DAVE
You came here to eat?

Amber laughs lightly.

AMBER
Of course.

She looks confused.

AMBER
Why?

Dave glances at his daughter.

His daughter gives him a small, knowing look.

Dave turns back to Amber.

DAVE
Nothing.

Amber steps inside.

AMBER
So what are we having?

Dave closes the door.

He looks thoughtful.

DAVE
I think you should sit down.

Amber smiles and walks toward the dining room.

Dave follows slowly.

His daughter stays near the door.

She watches her father.

Dave stops for a moment.

He looks back at her.

She gives him an encouraging nod.

Dave finally understands.

Amber may enjoy his company.

She may enjoy his food.

But that does not mean he should keep trying to buy her affection.

He walks toward the dining table.

DAVE
Amber.

She turns around.

AMBER
Yes?

Dave speaks calmly.

DAVE
You don’t have to come here because I give you things.

Amber looks confused.

AMBER
What are you talking about?

Dave shakes his head.

DAVE
Nothing.

He pulls out a chair for her.

DAVE
Just eat.

Amber sits.

Dave walks toward the kitchen.

His daughter watches him carefully.

For the first time that evening, Dave looks peaceful.

He has finally accepted the truth.

He doesn’t need to impress Amber.

He doesn’t need expensive gifts.

And he doesn’t need to chase someone who may only be coming around for a meal.

His daughter smiles softly.

Dave looks back at her.

DAVE
You were right.

She smiles.

DAVE’S DAUGHTER
I know.

Dave laughs quietly.

DAVE
Don’t get used to hearing that.

His daughter laughs.

The tension finally breaks.

Across the room, Amber begins eating.

Dave watches her for a moment.

Then he smiles to himself.

He finally understands why she keeps coming.

And this time, he refuses to confuse a meal with love.
