Soft morning sunlight enters through the curtains.
Larry slowly wakes up. He sits on the edge of his bed, looking tired and thoughtful. For a moment, everything is quiet.
Then his expression changes.
He remembers how strongly he had been pushing Brooke toward college without properly asking what she wanted.
LARRY
I’ve been handling this all wrong.
He takes a deep breath.
LARRY
Brooke deserves to make her own decision. I should have asked her what she wants instead of deciding everything for her.
Larry stands and walks toward the door.
LARRY
I need to talk to her.
Larry walks through the hallway toward Brooke’s room.
His footsteps are slow.
He stops outside her door and knocks gently.
LARRY
Brooke? Are you awake?
There is no answer.
LARRY
Brooke?
Still nothing. He carefully opens the door.
Larry steps inside. The room is strangely quiet.
He looks around. The bed is neatly arranged. The desk is mostly empty.
Larry notices something unusual.
LARRY
What happened here?
He walks toward the closet and opens it. Almost everything is gone.
LARRY
Brooke…
LARRY
Where did you go?
Larry notices that Brooke’s bags and other belongings are missing as well. His earlier anger disappears. Now he looks worried.
LARRY
Did she leave because of me?
Larry walks quickly into the living room. He looks around the house.
LARRY
Brooke!
Silence.
Larry takes out his phone and checks it. There are no new messages.
He looks toward the security camera monitor.
LARRY
The camera…
Larry walks over to the monitor.
Larry turns on the security camera footage.
The screen shows the outside of the house.
Then he sees Brooke standing outside with a bag in her hand.
LARRY
Brooke?
He moves closer to the screen.
A car pulls up near the house. It is not the family’s usual car.
LARRY
Who is that?
Brooke walks toward the car. She holds her bag tightly and briefly looks back toward the house.
LARRY
Wait…
Brooke opens the car door and gets inside.
The vehicle slowly begins to move.
LARRY
She really left.
Larry sits down. His hands rest on his knees.
He thinks about everything that happened between him and Brooke.
LARRY
I should have talked to her.
LARRY
I should have listened.
Larry calls Brooke. The phone rings, but there is no answer.
LARRY
Brooke, wherever you are, I hope you’re okay.
Larry returns to Brooke’s room. The empty space feels different now.
LARRY
You were planning this…
LARRY
And I didn’t even notice.
LARRY
Maybe I was so focused on what I wanted for you that I forgot to ask what you wanted for yourself.
Larry walks back to the security monitor and replays the footage.
LARRY
She didn’t just leave the house.
LARRY
She left because she felt like nobody was listening to her.
Larry picks up his phone.
LARRY
I need to find Brooke, but I don’t want to force her into anything.
LARRY
I just need to know that she’s safe.
The unknown car travels down the road. Brooke sits quietly inside with her bag beside her.
She looks through the window, thoughtful about what comes next.
Larry stands near the window.
LARRY
When Brooke comes back, I’m going to listen.
LARRY
No pressure. No forcing her. Just a conversation.
LARRY
If she wants college, I’ll support her.
LARRY
And if she has another plan, I need to hear it from her.
The car continues down the road.
Brooke looks ahead and holds her bag close.
The camera stays at a distance, never revealing where the car is going.
Larry walks through the quiet house.
LARRY
I thought I was helping you.
LARRY
But sometimes helping someone means letting them tell you what they need.
LARRY
I should have learned that sooner.
The sun begins to set. Larry sits alone, waiting.
Finally, the phone lights up. Larry sees Brooke’s name and answers immediately.
LARRY
Brooke?
A short silence. Larry listens carefully.
LARRY
Okay. I’m listening.
For once, Larry simply listens to Brooke’s side of the story.
The call ends. Larry slowly puts his phone down.
LARRY
Now I understand.
LARRY
Her future belongs to her.
Larry stands and turns off the living room light.
The house becomes quiet. The camera slowly pulls back.
Larry walks down the hallway, knowing that when Brooke returns, their conversation will be different.
