The Divorce That Doesn’t Feel Right

The Divorce That Doesn’t Feel Right

A CINEMATIC STORY OF LOVE, REGRET & UNCERTAINTY

STORY

The Divorce Conversation

The house is unusually quiet.

Anthony stands near the window, staring outside. His expression is calm, but there is something heavy behind his eyes.

D’Nisha sits on the couch, watching him carefully.

Anthony finally turns toward her.

ANTHONY

Amber talked to me about the divorce.

D’Nisha’s expression changes. She slowly sits up.

D’NISHA

She did?

Anthony nods.

ANTHONY

Yeah. She made it clear that she wants to move forward with it.

D’Nisha studies his face, trying to understand what he is feeling.

ANTHONY

She’s coming tomorrow.

D’Nisha looks confused.

D’NISHA

Coming here?

ANTHONY

Yeah. She said she’s coming tomorrow to ask for the divorce.

STORY

The Question

D’Nisha remains silent for a moment. She had expected this day to come eventually, but hearing Anthony say it out loud makes everything feel more real.

D’NISHA

So tomorrow is really happening?

Anthony looks down.

ANTHONY

I guess it is.

D’Nisha watches him closely. There is something about his voice that bothers her.

D’NISHA

Anthony… are you really happy about this?

Anthony doesn’t answer immediately.

D’Nisha waits.

D’NISHA

I mean it. Are you actually happy that Amber is coming tomorrow to ask for a divorce?

Anthony walks toward the couch and sits down. He rubs his hands together, thinking carefully about his answer.

STORY

The Truth Inside

ANTHONY

I’m happy that the situation is finally going to be settled.

D’Nisha keeps looking at him.

ANTHONY

I’m happy that there won’t be any more confusion about where we stand.

He pauses. His voice becomes softer.

ANTHONY

But… deep down, I’m not really happy.

D’Nisha’s eyes widen. She wasn’t expecting that answer.

D’NISHA

What do you mean?

Anthony sighs.

ANTHONY

I mean exactly what I said.

He looks toward the floor.

ANTHONY

Part of me knows the divorce is probably the right thing. Maybe it’s something that needs to happen.

ANTHONY

But that doesn’t mean it feels good.

STORY

Old Memories

D’Nisha becomes quiet. She watches Anthony’s face as he struggles to explain something he hasn’t fully explained to himself.

D’NISHA

Do you still have feelings for Amber?

Anthony looks at her.

He doesn’t answer.

That silence says enough.

D’Nisha slowly looks away. She hadn’t expected to hear this from him.

D’NISHA

Anthony…

ANTHONY

I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel.

He stands.

ANTHONY

I’ve been through a lot with Amber.

He walks toward the hallway.

ANTHONY

You can’t just erase all those years because you’re getting divorced.

STORY

Alone With The Past

Anthony enters his bedroom and closes the door behind him.

The silence is almost overwhelming.

He walks toward the bed and slowly sits down.

For a few seconds, he simply stares at the floor.

Then his eyes drift toward an old photograph sitting on the dresser.

Anthony picks it up.

He looks at the picture, and his expression softens.

Memories begin rushing through his mind.

He remembers the early days with Amber. The conversations. The laughter. The moments when they believed nothing could ever come between them.

ANTHONY

What happened to us?

He looks down at the photograph again.

ANTHONY

We were supposed to make it.

He slowly shakes his head.

ANTHONY

How did we get here?

STORY

D’Nisha Sees The Pain

D’Nisha stands outside Anthony’s bedroom.

She hesitates before knocking gently.

D’NISHA

Anthony?

No answer.

She knocks again.

D’NISHA

Can I come in?

Anthony finally responds.

ANTHONY

Yeah.

D’Nisha opens the door.

She sees Anthony sitting on the bed. His head is lowered, and the photograph is beside him.

D’Nisha immediately notices his emotional expression.

D’NISHA

You’re really upset.

ANTHONY

I’m fine.

D’NISHA

No, you’re not.

Anthony looks away.

D’NISHA

You don’t have to pretend with me.

ANTHONY

I’m not pretending. I just don’t know how to feel about tomorrow.

STORY

Tomorrow Changes Everything

D’NISHA

You said you were happy about the divorce.

ANTHONY

I know.

D’NISHA

But now you’re sitting here looking like you’re losing something.

Anthony looks at her.

ANTHONY

Because I am losing something.

D’Nisha becomes still.

ANTHONY

Even if the marriage isn’t working anymore, it was still my marriage.

He pauses and looks toward the photograph.

ANTHONY

Amber was still a huge part of my life.

D’Nisha lowers her eyes. She understands now.

D’NISHA

I didn’t know you felt this way.

ANTHONY

Neither did I.

D’Nisha looks at him with surprise.

D’NISHA

So what happens tomorrow?

Anthony doesn’t answer right away.

He looks toward the photograph.

ANTHONY

I don’t know.

The room falls silent.

Tomorrow Amber will walk through the door, and Anthony will have to face everything he has been trying not to f
