Larry walked into the room holding the divorce papers, convinced that one signature would finally end everything.

But before Bethany could even see what was written on those papers, the door suddenly opened.

Her father, Mr. Newburger, stepped inside.

He looked at Larry.

Then he looked at the papers.

And what he said next left Larry completely speechless.

SCENE 1 — THE LIVING ROOM — EVENING

The house is unusually quiet.

Larry stands near the doorway, gripping a folder tightly in his hand. His face is serious, but his eyes reveal exhaustion.

Bethany sits on the couch, unaware of what Larry is about to do.

Larry takes a slow breath and walks toward her.

LARRY

Bethany, we need to talk.

Bethany looks up.

She immediately notices the folder in his hand.

BETHANY

Why are you holding papers?

Larry doesn’t answer right away.

He sits across from her and places the folder on the table.

Bethany’s expression changes.

BETHANY

Larry… what is that?

Larry slowly opens the folder.

LARRY

Something I should’ve done a long time ago.

Bethany stares at him.

Her voice becomes softer.

BETHANY

You’re not serious.

Larry pulls out the divorce papers.

Bethany freezes.

SCENE 2 — THE DIVORCE PAPERS

Larry places the papers on the table.

LARRY

I’m tired, Bethany.

I’ve tried talking.

I’ve tried understanding.

I’ve tried giving us another chance.

He looks directly into her eyes.

LARRY

But every time I think we’re finally going to have peace, something happens.

Larry looks away.

Larry’s jaw tightens.

The front door opens.

Both of them turn toward the hallway.

SCENE 3 — MR. NEWBURGER ARRIVES

Mr. Newburger walks into the room.

He immediately notices Bethany’s face.

Then he sees Larry standing beside the table.

Finally, his eyes land on the divorce papers.

He stops.

MR. NEWBURGER

What’s going on here?

Nobody answers.

Mr. Newburger walks closer.

He picks up the papers and reads the first page.

His expression changes.

MR. NEWBURGER

Larry…

Larry looks at him.

LARRY

Mr. Newburger, this is between me and Bethany.

Mr. Newburger slowly puts the papers down.

MR. NEWBURGER

I know it’s between you and my daughter.

He looks at Bethany.

She looks devastated.

Then he turns back toward Larry.

MR. NEWBURGER

But before you make a decision you can’t take back, I need you to listen to me.

Larry crosses his arms.

LARRY

I’ve listened enough.

Mr. Newburger nods.

MR. NEWBURGER

Then maybe it’s time I talk.

SCENE 4 — THE UNEXPECTED OFFER

Mr. Newburger walks toward Larry.

His voice becomes calm.

MR. NEWBURGER

Larry, I know Bethany isn’t easy.

Bethany looks surprised.

BETHANY

Dad?

Mr. Newburger raises his hand.

MR. NEWBURGER

I’m not saying you’re perfect either.

Larry almost smiles.

MR. NEWBURGER

But I know my daughter.

He looks at Bethany.

MR. NEWBURGER

And I know she can be a lot to handle.

Bethany looks embarrassed.

Larry glances at the divorce papers.

LARRY

Then you understand why I’m doing this.

Mr. Newburger nods.

MR. NEWBURGER

I understand.

A pause.

Then Mr. Newburger reaches into his jacket and pulls out his wallet.

Larry looks confused.

LARRY

What are you doing?

Mr. Newburger looks Larry directly in the eyes.

MR. NEWBURGER

I’m making you an offer.

Larry raises an eyebrow.

LARRY

An offer?

Mr. Newburger takes out his checkbook.

Bethany stares at her father in disbelief.

BETHANY

Dad, what are you talking about?

Mr. Newburger ignores the question.

He looks at Larry.

MR. NEWBURGER

You want to leave my daughter?

Larry nods.

LARRY

Yes.

Mr. Newburger takes a pen.

MR. NEWBURGER

Then don’t.

Larry looks confused.

LARRY

What?

Mr. Newburger begins writing.

MR. NEWBURGER

I’ll pay you to stay.

The room goes completely silent.

Bethany’s mouth drops open.

Larry stares at him.

LARRY

You’re serious?

Mr. Newburger finishes writing and tears the check from the book.

MR. NEWBURGER

Very serious.

He holds the check toward Larry.

MR. NEWBURGER

Consider it compensation.

Larry doesn’t take it.

LARRY

You want to pay me to put up with Bethany?

Mr. Newburger nods.

MR. NEWBURGER

Exactly.

Bethany stands up.

BETHANY

Dad! I’m standing right here!

Mr. Newburger looks at her.

MR. NEWBURGER

And you’re going to stop making this man’s life difficult.

Bethany becomes quiet.

Larry looks between them.

For the first time that evening, the tension begins to break.

SCENE 5 — LARRY’S DECISION

Larry looks at the check.

Then he looks at Bethany.

His hand slowly moves toward the check.

Larry finally takes it.

That’s what I thought.

Larry shakes his head.

You really think money is going to fix this marriage?

Mr. Newburger’s smile disappears.

He looks at Bethany.

Larry looks at her.

Larry notices something written on the check.

His expression suddenly changes.

He turns toward Mr. Newburger.

Mr. Newburger’s face becomes serious.

Mr. Newburger doesn’t answer.

Mr. Newburger slowly sits down.

His voice drops.

Larry’s expression turns serious.

Bethany suddenly looks frightened.

LARRY

Mr. Newburger looks at Bethany.

Bethany shakes her head.

Larry steps closer.

What is she hiding?

He looks Larry straight in the eyes.

He pauses.

You may still want that divorce.

Larry’s face goes pale.

Bethany looks toward the floor.

The room falls silent.

Larry slowly places the check on the table.

Then tell me.
