A SUSPENSE STORY

THE DIVORCE PAPERS — A SECRET BETWEEN LARRY, ROB, AND BETHANY

One friend. One secret. One shocking truth.

⚠️ THE TRUTH WAS NEVER WHAT LARRY THOUGHT…

SCENE 1 — LARRY’S HOUSE — NIGHT

The divorce papers lie on the table.

Larry stands over them, staring at the signature line.

His hand trembles.

Then his phone suddenly lights up.

A message from Rob appears.

Larry reads it once.

Then again.

His expression changes completely.

LARRY
“Rob… what are you really trying to do?”

He slowly puts the phone down.

For weeks, Larry had believed Rob was simply trying to help him and Bethany solve their problems.

But tonight, Larry has discovered something that changes everything.

Rob doesn’t want to help their marriage.
He wants Bethany.

Larry picks up the divorce papers.

He looks at them silently.

Then he hears footsteps outside.

Larry quickly hides the papers.

The door opens.

Rob walks in.

ROB
“Larry, we need to talk.”
LARRY
“Yeah. I think we finally do.”

Rob notices the unusual tension in Larry’s face.

He stops.

Something is wrong.

SCENE 2 — LARRY’S LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS

Rob sits across from Larry.

Neither man speaks for several seconds.

The silence becomes uncomfortable.

ROB
“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Larry leans forward.

LARRY
“Because I finally understand what you’ve been doing.”

Rob’s expression tightens.

ROB
“What are you talking about?”

Larry reaches for his phone.

He places it on the table.

The message from Rob is still visible.

LARRY
“You keep finding reasons to talk to Bethany.”

Rob looks away.

ROB
“She needed someone to talk to.”

Larry shakes his head.

LARRY
“No. You wanted an excuse to talk to her.”

Rob becomes defensive.

ROB
“She was having problems with you. I was just listening.”

Larry’s voice becomes colder.

LARRY
“And my friend was secretly waiting for my marriage to fall apart.”

Rob immediately stands.

ROB
“That’s not true.”

Larry stands as well.

LARRY
“Then tell me why you keep telling Bethany that she would be better off without me.”

Rob says nothing.

Larry watches him carefully.

LARRY
“Tell me, Rob.”

The silence is an answer by itself.

SCENE 3 — BETHANY’S HOUSE — EARLIER THAT DAY

Bethany sits near the window.

Her phone rests beside her.

She looks exhausted from weeks of arguments and confusion.

The phone rings.

She looks at the screen.

Rob.

Bethany hesitates before answering.

BETHANY
“Hello?”
ROB
“Bethany, I just wanted to check on you.”
BETHANY
“I’m okay.”
ROB
“You don’t sound okay.”

She looks toward the window.

BETHANY
“Things with Larry are complicated.”
ROB
“Maybe you shouldn’t keep fighting for something that’s already broken.”

Bethany becomes silent.

BETHANY
“Why are you saying that?”

Rob pauses.

ROB
“Because sometimes people don’t realize when it’s time to walk away.”

Bethany doesn’t answer.

The conversation ends shortly afterward.

But Rob doesn’t realize someone has been listening.

Larry had overheard part of the conversation.

And for the first time, suspicion entered his mind.

BUT LARRY STILL DIDN’T KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH…

And the biggest secret was still hidden.

SCENE 4 — LARRY’S HOUSE — NIGHT

Larry walks toward the table.

He takes out the divorce papers.

Rob watches him.

ROB
“What’s that?”

Larry holds the papers up.

LARRY
“These are the papers you wanted me to sign.”
ROB
“I never forced you to sign anything.”
LARRY
“You didn’t have to.”

Larry places the papers on the table.

LARRY
“You kept telling me that Bethany and I couldn’t fix things.”
ROB
“Because I thought you were hurting each other.”
LARRY
“And now I know why you wanted us apart.”

Rob’s face becomes serious.

ROB
“You’re making a mistake.”

Larry laughs bitterly.

LARRY
“No. I made the mistake when I trusted you.”

Rob steps closer.

ROB
“Larry, listen to me.”
LARRY
“No. You listen.”

Larry points toward the divorce papers.

LARRY
“You wanted these papers signed so you could tell yourself that Bethany was finally free.”

Rob doesn’t respond.

Larry’s voice becomes quieter.

LARRY
“And then you could be the person waiting for her.”

Rob looks down.

That silence makes Larry even more suspicious.

SCENE 5 — OUTSIDE BETHANY’S HOUSE — NIGHT

Bethany stands outside, holding her phone.

Larry arrives.

She immediately notices something is wrong.

BETHANY
“Larry? What happened?”

Larry looks at her.

His anger is obvious, but he tries to remain calm.

LARRY
“Did Rob talk to you today?”

Bethany freezes.

BETHANY
“Yes.”
LARRY
“What did he say?”

Bethany hesitates.

BETHANY
“He said I shouldn’t keep fighting for a relationship that was already broken.”

Larry closes his eyes for a moment.

Now he knows.

LARRY
“He’s been telling you the same thing for weeks.”
BETHANY
“Why?”

Larry looks toward the house.

LARRY
“Because I don’t think he wants to save our marriage.”

Bethany’s expression changes.

BETHANY
“What are you saying?”
LARRY
“I think Rob wants you to himself.”

Bethany steps backward.

BETHANY
“Rob is your friend.”
LARRY
“That’s exactly why I trusted him.”

A long silence follows.

Bethany looks at her phone again.

Then another message arrives.

From Rob.

She doesn’t open it.

SCENE 6 — LARRY’S HOUSE — LATER THAT NIGHT

Larry returns home alone.

He places the divorce papers on the table.

He stares at them.

For a moment, he considers signing them.

Then he remembers Rob’s messages.

He remembers every conversation.

Every warning.

Every time Rob told him that Bethany would leave.

Larry slowly tears the papers in half.

But he stops.

Instead, he picks them up and walks toward the fireplace.

Rob suddenly enters.

ROB
“Larry, wait.”

Larry turns around.

LARRY
“Why?”

Rob looks at the papers.
