THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
SCENE 1 — ISAIAH’S GRANDMOTHER’S HOUSE — AFTERNOON
Warm afternoon sunlight fills the living room.
Isaiah sits across from his grandmother, who watches him carefully. Something about his behavior has caught her attention.
She studies his face for a moment before finally speaking.
GRANDMOTHER
Isaiah, where is Brooke?
Isaiah looks down.
He avoids her eyes and remains silent.
His grandmother waits for an answer.
GRANDMOTHER
I asked you where Brooke is.
Isaiah takes a slow breath.
Still, he says nothing.
GRANDMOTHER
Why aren’t you answering me?
Isaiah finally looks up.
ISAIAH
Grandma, it’s complicated.
GRANDMOTHER
Complicated?
What does that mean?
Isaiah stands. He clearly wants to end the conversation.
ISAIAH
I’ll explain everything later.
His grandmother watches him walk toward the door.
GRANDMOTHER
Isaiah, wait.
Isaiah stops for a second and turns around.
GRANDMOTHER
Where is Brooke?
Isaiah hesitates.
For a moment, it looks like he might finally tell her the truth.
But he doesn’t.
ISAIAH
I’ll talk to you later, Grandma.
He walks out.
The door closes behind him.
Silence fills the room.
His grandmother remains seated, staring at the closed door.
GRANDMOTHER
Something is going on.
She looks at Brooke’s name in her contacts.
After a moment of hesitation, she decides to call.
SCENE 2 — OUTSIDE ISAIAH’S HOUSE — CONTINUOUS
Isaiah walks down the sidewalk, unaware that his grandmother is making a phone call that could change everything.
His phone remains in his pocket.
He doesn’t look back.
Meanwhile, inside the house, his grandmother waits for Brooke to answer.
The phone rings.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Finally, Brooke answers.
SCENE 3 — BROOKE’S ROOM — AFTERNOON
Brooke sits on the edge of her bed.
She looks surprised when she sees Isaiah’s grandmother calling.
She immediately answers.
BROOKE
Hello, Grandma?
His grandmother takes a breath. Her voice is serious.
GRANDMOTHER
Brooke, I need to talk to you.
Brooke sits up straight.
BROOKE
Is everything okay?
A brief silence follows.
GRANDMOTHER
I was just talking to Isaiah.
Brooke’s expression changes.
BROOKE
Isaiah?
GRANDMOTHER
Yes.
I asked him where you were.
BROOKE
What did he say?
His grandmother looks toward the door.
GRANDMOTHER
That’s the problem.
He didn’t answer me.
Brooke’s eyes widen.
BROOKE
He didn’t say where I was?
GRANDMOTHER
No.
And when I asked him again, he avoided the question and left.
Brooke becomes uneasy.
BROOKE
Why would he do that?
His grandmother doesn’t answer immediately. Instead, she chooses her words carefully.
GRANDMOTHER
Brooke, there’s something else you need to know.
Brooke’s attention sharpens.
BROOKE
What?
The grandmother takes a slow breath.
GRANDMOTHER
There is another girl with Isaiah.
Brooke freezes.
BROOKE
Another girl?
GRANDMOTHER
Yes.
Brooke’s expression turns serious.
BROOKE
Who?
GRANDMOTHER
Her name is Mariah.
Brooke stands up from the bed.
Her shock quickly turns into anger.
BROOKE
Mariah?
GRANDMOTHER
That’s what I heard.
Brooke starts pacing around the room.
BROOKE
Why didn’t Isaiah tell me?
GRANDMOTHER
I don’t know.
That’s why I called you. I thought you should know.
Brooke grips her phone tightly.
BROOKE
Are you sure she’s with him?
GRANDMOTHER
I wouldn’t call you if I didn’t think it was important.
Brooke looks toward the door.
Her mind races.
BROOKE
Where is he now?
GRANDMOTHER
He just left.
BROOKE
Did he say where he was going?
GRANDMOTHER
No.
Brooke closes her eyes for a moment.
Then she opens them with determination.
BROOKE
Grandma, thank you for telling me.
GRANDMOTHER
Brooke, don’t rush into anything. Talk to him first.
Brooke remains silent.
BROOKE
I need to see Isaiah.
She ends the call.
SCENE 4 — BROOKE’S ROOM — MOMENTS LATER
Brooke puts her phone down.
She stands completely still.
The room is quiet.
She looks toward a photograph of herself and Isaiah.
Her expression softens for only a moment.
Then the memory of her grandmother’s words returns.
“There’s another girl with Isaiah.”
Brooke turns away from the photograph.
She grabs her bag.
She quickly gathers her belongings.
BROOKE
Why didn’t you tell me, Isaiah?
She picks up her keys.
Before leaving, she pauses at the door.
A final thought crosses her mind.
BROOKE
I’m going to find out myself.
She walks out.
SCENE 5 — STREET OUTSIDE BROOKE’S HOUSE — LATE AFTERNOON
Brooke steps outside.
The sunlight is beginning to fade.
She walks quickly toward her car.
Her phone vibrates.
She looks down.
A message has arrived from Isaiah.
“Where are you?”
Brooke stares at it.
She doesn’t reply.
Instead, she locks the phone.
She gets into the car.
SCENE 6 — ISAIAH’S LOCATION — EVENING
Isaiah stands outside a small café.
Mariah is with him.
They are talking quietly.
MARIAH
You seem worried.
ISAIAH
I’m fine.
MARIAH
Are you sure?
ISAIAH
Yeah.
His phone vibrates.
He checks it.
His grandmother has called.
Isaiah looks surprised.
He doesn’t answer.
MARIAH
Why aren’t you answering?
ISAIAH
I’ll call her later.
Mariah nods.
Neither of them notices Brooke’s car approaching from a distance.
SCENE 7 — OUTSIDE THE CAFÉ — EVENING
Brooke’s car slows down.
She sees Isaiah.
Then she sees Mariah standing beside him.
Her eyes widen.
The information her grandmother gave her is suddenly right in front of her.
Brooke parks.
She remains inside the car for a moment.
Her hands tighten around the steering wheel.
She takes a deep breath.
Then she opens the door.
SCENE 8 — OUTSIDE THE CAFÉ — CONTINUOUS
Isaiah hears footsteps.
He turns.
His face changes instantly.
ISAIAH
Brooke?
Brooke walks toward him.
She doesn’t answer immediately.
Mariah looks between them, confused.
MARIAH
Do you know her?
ISAIAH
Yes.
Brooke stops in front of him.
BROOKE
So this is Mariah.
ISAIAH
Brooke, listen—
BROOKE
No.
A tense silence falls between them.
BROOKE
My grandmother called me.
Isaiah’s expression changes.
ISAIAH
Grandma called you?
BROOKE
Yes.
She asked you where I was.
Isaiah remains silent.
BROOKE
And you didn’t answer her.
Isaiah looks away.
BROOKE
Why?
ISAIAH
It wasn’t what you think.
BROOKE
Then tell me what it is.
ISAIAH
Brooke, I can explain.
BROOKE
Then explain.
Isaiah remains quiet.
BROOKE
You had the perfect chance to tell me everything.
Instead, you stayed silent.
MARIAH
Maybe I should leave.
Brooke looks at her.
BROOKE
No. Stay.
Mariah stops.
BROOKE
I want to hear the truth from him.
SCENE 9 — OUTSIDE THE CAFÉ — MOMENTS LATER
Isaiah finally steps closer.
ISAIAH
Brooke, nothing happened the way you’re imagining.
BROOKE
Then why did you hide it?
Isaiah has no immediate answer.
BROOKE
That’s what hurts.
I had to hear about another girl from your grandmother.
Isaiah looks down.
ISAIAH
I didn’t want to create a misunderstanding.
BROOKE
Your silence created the misunderstanding.
Mariah watches quietly.
The atmosphere becomes heavier.
ISAIAH
I should have told you.
BROOKE
Yes. You should have.
A long silence follows.
BROOKE
Why is Mariah here with you?
Isaiah looks at Mariah.
Then back at Brooke.
He opens his mouth to answer.
But before he can speak, his phone rings again.
Everyone looks at the phone.
The screen shows his grandmother’s name.
Isaiah stares at it.
BROOKE
Answer it.
Isaiah hesitates.
The phone keeps ringing.
BROOKE
Go ahead.
Isaiah finally answers.
ISAIAH
Hello, Grandma?
His grandmother’s voice can be heard faintly through the phone.
Isaiah’s face suddenly becomes serious.
He listens.
His expression changes completely.
Brooke watches him carefully.
BROOKE
What happened?
Isaiah doesn’t answer.
He slowly lowers the phone.
BROOKE
Isaiah?
He looks at her.
ISAIAH
Grandma says there’s something she needs to tell all of us.
Brooke and Mariah exchange confused looks.
The evening suddenly feels much more tense.
BROOKE
What does she want to tell us?
Isaiah looks toward the road.
ISAIAH
I don’t know.
A mysterious silence settles over the group.
Brooke realizes that the phone call may have opened a much bigger story than she expected.
She looks at Isaiah.
BROOKE
Then let’s find out.
Isaiah nods slowly.
Mariah remains silent.
The three of them stand together as the sun disappears behind the buildings.
The mystery surrounding Isaiah, Brooke, and Mariah is far from over.
FADE OUT.
