The Miami Trip Begins

After Brooke finally leaves for Philadelphia, Larry and Bethany suddenly find themselves with an unexpected amount of time alone. Bethany sees it as the perfect opportunity to spend some peaceful time with Larry, away from all the family drama. She suggests that they take a short trip to Miami and use the time to reconnect.

But Bethany has no idea that Larry has a completely different reason for agreeing to the trip.

Larry has already made up his mind about their marriage. Before leaving home, he secretly takes the divorce papers with him and carefully places them inside his luggage. His plan is simple: once they arrive in Miami, he wants to find a quiet moment to give Bethany the papers and finally tell her that he wants to end their marriage.

Larry believes Miami could give him the distance he needs to make the decision final.

Bethany Is Excited

As they arrive in Miami, Bethany is excited. She looks around at the beautiful surroundings and immediately starts talking about everything they can do together.

Bethany: “Finally, Larry. It’s just me and you. No Brooke, no family drama, no interruptions. We can actually enjoy ourselves.”
Larry: “Yeah, Bethany. Maybe we can finally get some peace.”

Larry forces a smile. Bethany notices that Larry seems unusually quiet.

Bethany: “What’s wrong with you? You don’t look excited.”
Larry: “I’m just tired from traveling.”
Bethany: “Well, you’re going to have to get over that because I came here to have fun.”

Larry Hides the Divorce Papers

Later, while Bethany is getting ready, Larry quietly opens his suitcase. He looks at the divorce papers sitting inside. For a moment, he hesitates. He knows that once he hands them to Bethany, there may be no turning back.

Larry: “This is what I came here to do.”

He closes the suitcase before Bethany can notice anything.

Bethany Notices Larry’s Behavior

The next morning, Bethany wakes up excited about spending the day with Larry.

Bethany: “Larry, what are we doing today?”
Larry: “I don’t know. We can figure something out.”
Bethany: “You’ve been acting strange since we got here.”
Larry: “I’m fine.”

Bethany Talks About Their Future

But the words stay in Bethany’s mind.

That evening, they return to their hotel after dinner. Bethany sits down and begins talking about Brooke and how strange it feels with her gone.

Bethany: “I already miss Brooke. But I’m glad she gets to enjoy Philly. This gives us some time for ourselves.”
Bethany: “I really wanted this trip because I thought maybe we could fix everything.”

Larry sits quietly. Bethany notices his silence.

Bethany: “Larry, are you listening to me?”
Larry: “Yeah, I’m listening.”
Bethany: “Then tell me what you’re thinking.”
Larry: “I’m thinking about a lot of things.”

Larry Reveals the Papers

Larry stands up and walks toward his suitcase. Bethany watches him closely.

Bethany: “What are you doing?”
Larry: “Getting something.”

Larry opens the suitcase. His hand moves toward the envelope containing the divorce papers. He stops for a moment, knowing that this is the moment he has been preparing for.

Bethany: “Larry?”
Larry: “Bethany, there’s something I brought with me to Miami.”
Bethany: “What?”

Larry reaches into the suitcase and pulls out the envelope.

Larry: “I didn’t bring this trip just because you asked me to.”
Bethany: “What are you talking about?”

Larry looks directly at Bethany.

Larry: “I brought the divorce papers.”

Bethany Is Stunned

Bethany: “What?”
Larry: “I was planning to give these to you while we were here.”
Bethany: “You brought divorce papers on our trip?”
Larry: “Yes.”
Bethany: “You let me think this was a romantic getaway while you were planning to divorce me?”
Larry: “I didn’t know how else to do it.”

Bethany shakes her head, struggling to understand what Larry has planned.

Bethany: “Larry, why would you bring me all the way to Miami just to tell me our marriage is over?”
Larry: “Because Brooke is gone. We’re finally alone. And I knew I needed to have this conversation without everybody else getting involved.”

Larry Reveals His Real Plan

Bethany: “So what was the plan?”
Larry: “I was going to give you the papers, explain everything, and then leave you here.”
Bethany: “You were going to leave me in Miami?”
Larry: “I thought maybe having some distance would make everything easier.”

Bethany looks at the envelope and realizes that the trip she thought could save their marriage may have been planned by Larry as the final chapter of their relationship.

The Final Question

Bethany: “I thought you brought me here because you wanted to spend time with me.”
Larry: “You wanted the trip. I agreed because I thought it would give me the chance to do what I’ve been afraid to do.”

The room falls silent. Bethany looks at Larry and realizes that Miami may not be the fresh start she imagined.

Bethany: “Are you really done with me?”
Larry: “I’ve been thinking about this for a long time.”
Bethany: “Then why didn’t you tell me before we came to Miami?”
Larry: “Because I knew you’d try to stop me.”
Bethany: “And what happens now?”
Larry: “I think we finally have the conversation we’ve been avoiding.”

The Miami Trip Was Never What Bethany Thought

For Bethany, the Miami trip was supposed to bring her and Larry closer. For Larry, it was the opportunity to finally deliver the divorce papers and walk away.
