The house was unusually quiet that evening.

Shayla sat alone on the couch, staring at the television without actually watching it. Her mind was somewhere else. Outside, the wind moved softly through the trees, and the sound of distant traffic filled the silence.

When Shayla finally reached Iman’s neighborhood, she slowed down.
