BETHANY WANTS TO GET STERILIZED — LARRY FINALLY SPEAKS OUT!

Genre: Family Drama | Marriage Conflict | Emotional Confrontation

Format: Cinematic Screenplay

Setting: Larry and Bethany’s House — Living Room, Bedroom, and Kitchen

SCENE 1 — THE LIVING ROOM — EVENING

The house is quiet, but the tension between Larry and Bethany has been building for days. Bethany sits on the couch, staring at the floor. Larry walks into the room and notices that something is troubling her.

LARRY

What’s going on with you now, Bethany? You’ve been acting differently all day, and every time I ask you something, you look at me like you have something important to say.

Bethany takes a deep breath. She looks at Larry, determined to speak honestly, even if her words change everything between them.

BETHANY

Larry, I’ve made a decision about my life. I’ve thought about it for a long time, and I don’t want to keep pretending that everything between us is fine.

Larry folds his arms, waiting for her to continue.

LARRY

What kind of decision? Because I’m tired of these conversations turning into another argument.

BETHANY

I want to get sterilized, Larry. I don’t want to have any more children, and I want to make that decision for myself.

Larry freezes. He never expected Bethany to say something so serious.

LARRY

You want to get sterilized? Are you serious right now?

BETHANY

Yes, I’m serious. I’ve thought about it carefully, and I don’t want you to turn this into another fight. It’s my body, Larry, and I need you to respect my decision.

Larry shakes his head, struggling to understand why Bethany has chosen this moment to tell him.

LARRY

After everything we’ve been through, you come to me with this? Do you even think about how these decisions affect our marriage?

Bethany’s eyes fill with tears, but she refuses to look away.

BETHANY

I’ve spent so much time worrying about what you want that I’ve forgotten to think about what I want. I’m tired of feeling like I have to explain every decision I make.

Larry turns away, visibly frustrated.

SCENE 2 — THE KITCHEN — MOMENTS LATER

Bethany follows Larry into the kitchen. He opens a cabinet, takes out a glass, and fills it with water, trying to avoid another argument.

BETHANY

Larry, please listen to me. I’m not telling you this to hurt you. I’m telling you because I don’t want to keep secrets from you.

LARRY

Then why does it feel like every conversation we have ends with you telling me something that changes everything?

BETHANY

Because we never really listen to each other anymore. You hear my words, but you don’t try to understand why I feel the way I do.

Larry places the glass on the counter.

LARRY

And what about me, Bethany? Do you ever stop to think about how I feel? Do you think I enjoy coming home and feeling like I’m walking into another confrontation?

Bethany takes a small step closer.

BETHANY

I know you have feelings, Larry. I’ve never said you don’t. But I cannot keep making myself unhappy just to keep you comfortable.

Larry lets out a bitter laugh.

LARRY

So now I’m the reason you’re unhappy?

BETHANY

I didn’t say that. But you make everything difficult when I don’t agree with you. I can’t even talk about my own future without worrying about how you’ll react.

A long silence settles over the kitchen. Larry looks at Bethany, searching for something to say, but his frustration keeps getting in the way.

LARRY

You know what? I’m tired of being blamed for everything that happens in this house.

BETHANY

And I’m tired of being blamed for trying to make my own choices.

They stand on opposite sides of the counter, both realizing how far apart they have become.

SCENE 3 — THE BEDROOM — NIGHT

Later that evening, Larry enters the bedroom and finds Bethany sitting on the edge of the bed. Her hands are clasped together, and her expression is exhausted. He closes the door behind him.

LARRY

We need to settle this tonight. I don’t want to keep having the same conversation over and over again.

Bethany looks up at him.

BETHANY

Then let’s settle it. I’ve told you what I want, and I’m not going to keep defending myself for making a decision about my own body.

Larry begins pacing across the room.

LARRY

You always say you want peace, but somehow we never get any. There’s always another problem, another disagreement, another reason for us to fight.

BETHANY

Larry, I’m not asking you to agree with everything I say. I’m asking you to stop treating me like I have no right to make decisions for myself.

He stops pacing and turns toward her.

LARRY

You want me to respect your decisions? Fine. But I want you to understand something, too. I cannot keep living like this.

Bethany’s face changes. She knows his words are leading somewhere painful.

BETHANY

What exactly are you trying to tell me?

Larry takes a deep breath before answering.

LARRY

I want you to stop pressuring me. Stop questioning me every time I disagree with you. I’m tired of feeling like I can never do anything right in your eyes.

Bethany stands up slowly.

BETHANY

I never wanted you to feel that way. But what about how you make me feel? Every time I try to explain myself, you turn it into a fight.

LARRY

Because I’m tired, Bethany! I’m tired of all this tension!

His raised voice makes her step back.

BETHANY

You think I’m not tired? I’ve been carrying this pain for a long time, Larry. I just stopped pretending that I wasn’t hurting.

For a moment, Larry seems ready to respond. Instead, he looks away.

SCENE 4 — THE LIVING ROOM — THE NEXT MORNING

The following morning, Bethany sits alone on the couch with a cup of coffee. Larry enters the living room, already dressed, and notices that she barely looks at him. He stands in front of her.

LARRY

Bethany, we need to understand each other. I don’t want to wake up every morning wondering what argument we’re going to have next.

BETHANY

Neither do I. But understanding each other means both of us have to listen.

Larry shakes his head.

LARRY

I’ve heard enough about what you want. You want to get sterilized, and you’ve made up your mind. I understand that you’re serious.

Bethany studies his expression carefully.

BETHANY

Then why are you still talking to me like I’ve done something wrong?

LARRY

Because I’m frustrated! I feel like I’ve lost control of my own life, too. Everything has become an argument, and I don’t know how to make it stop.

BETHANY

You don’t have to control my choices to have a place in my life, Larry. You can tell me how you feel without trying to make me feel guilty.

Larry sits in the chair across from her.

LARRY

Maybe we’ve both been doing things that have made this marriage harder than it needs to be.

Bethany looks surprised by his admission.

BETHANY

That’s the first honest thing you’ve said to me this morning.

Larry gives her a frustrated look.

LARRY

Don’t start again, Bethany.

BETHANY

I’m not starting anything. I’m telling you that I want us to talk without attacking each other.

Larry leans forward, his voice becoming firm.

LARRY

Then let me make myself clear. I don’t want you bothering me about this anymore. I don’t want another argument every time we disagree. If you’ve made your decision, then stop bringing it to me like I’m supposed to change your mind.

Bethany’s eyes widen.

SCENE 5 — THE FINAL CONFRONTATION — LIVING ROOM

Bethany slowly puts her coffee cup on the table. She looks directly at Larry, hurt by the way he has spoken to her.

BETHANY

Bothering you? Is that what you think I’m doing? I’m your wife, Larry. I’m trying to talk to you about something important in my life.

LARRY

And I’m telling you that I don’t want to keep arguing about it! I have my own problems, and I cannot spend every day dealing with another confrontation.

Bethany wipes a tear from her cheek.

BETHANY

You know what hurts the most? It’s not that you disagree with me. It’s that you make me feel like my feelings are a burden to you.

Larry looks at her, but his expression remains guarded.

LARRY

I’ve had enough, Bethany. From now on, I want you to leave me alone about this. You’ve made your decision, so make it. Just don’t keep bothering me.

The room falls silent. Bethany stares at him as his words sink in.

BETHANY

Fine, Larry. I won’t keep asking you to understand me. I won’t keep begging you to listen. But don’t expect me to forget how you treated me when I tried to be honest with you.

Larry looks away, unable to answer immediately.

LARRY

I didn’t say I wanted you to forget anything.

BETHANY

You didn’t have to. Your actions have already told me enough.

She turns and walks toward the bedroom, leaving Larry alone in the living room. Larry sits down, rubbing his forehead. He wanted the argument to end, but the silence that follows feels heavier than the fight itself.

SCENE 6 — BETHANY MAKES HER DECISION

Inside the bedroom, Bethany closes the door and sits quietly on the bed. She takes out her phone and looks up information about scheduling a medical consultation.

She knows sterilization is a serious, generally permanent decision, and she wants to discuss the procedure, its risks, and her options with a qualified medical professional.

Her phone begins ringing. Larry’s name appears on the screen. She watches it ring for a moment before answering.

BETHANY

What do you want, Larry?

LARRY

I just wanted to know if you were coming back downstairs.

BETHANY

Not right now. I need some time to think.

LARRY

Fine. Take your time. I don’t want another argument.

Bethany closes her eyes briefly.

BETHANY

Neither do I, Larry. But I need more than silence from my husband. I need respect.

She ends the call and places the phone beside her. Downstairs, Larry stares at his phone, realizing that telling Bethany to stop bothering him has not solved anything.

For the first time, he begins to wonder whether his anger has pushed his wife further away. Bethany, meanwhile, looks toward the bedroom window, determined to make her next decision carefully and for herself.

Their marriage remains uncertain, and neither knows what the future holds.

FADE OUT.

END OF EPISODE.
