Jesse Proposes to Bethany, but Larry Shows Up and Catches Him!
The evening was quiet, but Bethany’s heart was anything but peaceful. For months, she had been trying to save her relationship with Larry, hoping that the man she once fell in love with would finally return to the person he used to be. Unfortunately, every attempt seemed to push them further apart.
Larry had become distant, impatient, and increasingly disrespectful. Bethany no longer knew whether he genuinely wanted to remain married to her or whether he was simply staying because leaving would require him to admit that their relationship had failed.
What Larry didn’t realize was that someone from Bethany’s past had been watching her struggle from a distance.
His name was Jesse. And now, Jesse was ready to do something that could change Bethany’s life forever.
Scene 1: Jesse Discovers the Truth
Jesse sat in his living room, scrolling through his phone when a message from a mutual friend caught his attention.
“Have you heard what’s going on with Bethany and Larry?” the message read.
Jesse immediately sat up. He had known Bethany long before Larry became the center of her life. Their relationship had once been filled with affection, laughter, and dreams about the future. But things between them had fallen apart because of misunderstandings, hurtful decisions, and mistakes neither of them had known how to repair.
He called their mutual friend.
Jesse: “Tell me exactly what’s happening.”
Friend: “Man, Larry isn’t treating Bethany right. They’re constantly arguing. From what I’ve heard, she’s been trying everything to fix their marriage, but Larry keeps making her feel like she’s the problem.”
Jesse: “Are you serious? That’s the woman he promised to love.”
Friend: “I know. But things have gotten bad. Bethany deserves somebody who actually listens to her.”
Jesse remained silent. He had imagined speaking to Bethany again countless times, but he had always convinced himself that too much time had passed.
Jesse: “Does she have anybody helping her through this?”
Friend: “Not really. She acts like she’s fine, but anybody who knows her can tell she’s hurting.”
Jesse ended the call and stared at the wall. He knew he couldn’t simply walk back into Bethany’s life and pretend the past never happened. He had hurt her, too.
But one thought kept returning to him: What if Bethany and I were given another chance?
Finally, he whispered, “I need to talk to her.” And he made the call.
Scene 2: Bethany Receives an Unexpected Call
Bethany was sitting alone in her bedroom when her phone began ringing. She glanced at the screen and froze.
Jesse.
For a moment, she wondered whether she was imagining things. She answered cautiously.
Bethany: “Hello?”
Jesse: “Hey, Bethany. It’s Jesse.”
Bethany: “I know who it is, Jesse.”
Jesse: “Right. Sorry. I just wasn’t sure if you’d answer.”
Bethany: “Honestly, neither was I.”
The silence that followed carried years of unfinished conversations.
Jesse: “How have you been?”
Bethany: “I’m fine.”
Jesse: “Bethany, I know you better than that.”
Her expression changed.
Bethany: “No, Jesse. You knew me a long time ago. You don’t know what’s happening in my life anymore.”
Jesse: “Maybe you’re right. But I heard things haven’t been easy between you and Larry.”
Bethany: “Who told you that?”
Jesse: “Does it matter?”
Bethany: “Yes, it matters! The last thing I need is somebody from my past calling me because they’ve heard rumors about my marriage.”
Jesse: “I’m not calling to judge you.”
Bethany: “Then why are you calling?”
Jesse took a deep breath.
Jesse: “Because I still care about you.”
Bethany didn’t respond. Those words were ones she had once desperately wanted to hear from him. But hearing them now brought back memories she had spent years trying to put behind her.
Bethany: “Jesse, please don’t do this.”
Jesse: “Do what?”
Bethany: “Come back into my life when everything is already falling apart.”
Jesse: “I’m not trying to make things harder for you. I just want to see you. Let me explain a few things, and if you decide you don’t want to talk to me again, I’ll respect that.”
Bethany closed her eyes.
Bethany: “One conversation. That’s all I’m agreeing to.”
Jesse: “That’s enough for me.”
When the call ended, Bethany sat quietly, wondering whether opening a door to her past would bring her peace—or create an entirely new storm.
Scene 3: Jesse Arrives at Bethany’s House
The following afternoon, Bethany heard a knock at the front door. She opened it and found Jesse standing outside, holding a small bouquet of flowers.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Jesse: “Hi, Bethany.”
Bethany: “You actually came.”
Jesse: “I said I would.”
She stepped aside. “Come in.”
Jesse entered the house and placed the flowers on the table. He noticed a framed photograph of Bethany and Larry on a nearby shelf. The photograph showed them smiling together, looking like a couple who believed their future would be beautiful.
Jesse: “That must be difficult to look at now.”
Bethany: “Sometimes.”
Jesse: “Do you still love him?”
The question caught her off guard.
Bethany: “That’s not something I can answer in five seconds, Jesse.”
Jesse: “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked it like that.”
Bethany: “The truth is, I remember the man I fell in love with. I remember the things we promised each other. I keep hoping he’ll come back, but every time I try to talk to him, we end up arguing.”
Jesse: “And what happens when you tell him you’re hurting?”
Bethany: “He tells me I’m too sensitive. Or that I’m making everything about myself.”
Jesse shook his head.
Jesse: “You shouldn’t have to beg somebody to care about your feelings.”
Bethany: “And you think you know how to treat me better?”
Jesse: “No. I think I know what it’s like to make mistakes and realize too late what you’ve lost.”
That answer surprised her.
Jesse: “I know I hurt you in the past. I made decisions that damaged your trust, and I can’t pretend I didn’t. You have every reason to be cautious around me.”
Bethany: “Then why are you here?”
Jesse: “Because I heard you were hurting, and I couldn’t keep pretending I didn’t care.”
Bethany looked away, struggling to understand what she was feeling.
Bethany: “Why now? Why didn’t you contact me six months ago? Or a year ago?”
Jesse: “Because I heard you were happy. I thought you’d moved on, and I didn’t want to destroy what you had built.”
Bethany: “And now?”
Jesse: “Now I hear you’re struggling, and I realize that keeping my feelings to myself might have been another mistake.”
Bethany stood and walked toward the window.
Bethany: “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with all of this.”
Jesse: “You don’t have to do anything right now.”
But as Bethany turned back toward him, Jesse made a decision he had been considering since the moment he arrived. He wasn’t going to leave without telling her everything.
Scene 4: The Past Comes Back to Life
Jesse took a deep breath.
Jesse: “When we were together, I thought walking away would make everything easier. We were fighting, we weren’t communicating, and I convinced myself that leaving was the only way to stop hurting each other.”
Bethany: “You didn’t just leave, Jesse. You made me feel like everything we had meant nothing.”
Jesse: “I know.”
Bethany: “No, I don’t think you do. I spent so much time wondering what was wrong with me. I kept asking myself why I wasn’t enough for you.”
Jesse lowered his head.
Jesse: “You were enough. I was the one who didn’t know how to handle what we were going through.”
Bethany: “Then why didn’t you fight for us?”
Jesse: “Because I was afraid. And instead of admitting that, I ran away.”
Bethany wiped her eyes.
Bethany: “You don’t get to come back years later and act like an apology fixes everything.”
Jesse: “I know it doesn’t.”
Bethany: “Then what do you want from me?”
Jesse looked directly into her eyes.
Jesse: “A chance to prove that I can be different.”
Bethany: “Jesse, I’m married.”
Jesse: “I’m aware of that.”
Bethany: “And regardless of what Larry and I are going through, I can’t pretend those vows don’t mean anything.”
Jesse: “I’m not asking you to make a decision today. But I also don’t want you to believe that your current situation means you have to spend the rest of your life feeling unloved.”
Bethany became quiet. For the first time in a long while, somebody had listened to her without immediately turning the conversation into an argument.
Scene 5: Jesse Makes an Unexpected Proposal
Jesse stood up.
Jesse: “Bethany, there’s something else I need to tell you.”
Bethany: “What is it?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small ring box. Bethany’s eyes widened.
Bethany: “Jesse, what are you doing?”
He opened the box, revealing a ring.
Jesse: “I’m doing something I should have had the courage to do a long time ago.”
Bethany: “Jesse, don’t.”
Jesse: “Please, just hear me out.”
He lowered himself onto one knee. Bethany immediately covered her mouth.
Jesse: “I know this isn’t the situation either of us imagined. I know you’re still married, and I know there are things we need to work through before any future together could even be possible.”
He looked up at her, his voice trembling slightly.
Jesse: “But I need you to know that I don’t see you as somebody who needs rescuing. I see you as the woman I loved, the woman I lost, and the woman I never completely stopped caring about.”
Bethany’s eyes filled with tears.
Bethany: “Please don’t make this harder than it already is.”
Jesse: “I’m not asking you to run away with me. I’m asking you to consider the possibility that someday, when your life is settled and your heart is ready, we might build something real together.”
He held the ring box toward her.
Jesse: “Bethany, I want to spend my life with you. I want to be the person who listens when you’re hurting, who stands beside you when things get difficult, and who never makes you question whether you matter.”
Bethany stared at him, completely overwhelmed. She was shocked that Jesse had returned after all these years. She was touched by his words, but she was also frightened by the consequences of what he was asking.
Bethany: “Jesse, I don’t know what to say.”
Jesse: “You don’t have to say yes. I just couldn’t keep pretending that I didn’t want another chance with you.”
Bethany took a small step forward. For one brief moment, it seemed as though she might reach for his hand.
Then a loud voice shattered the silence.
Bethany spun around. Her face went pale.
Standing in the doorway was Larry.
And he had seen everything.
Scene 6: Larry Catches Jesse
Larry stood frozen for a second, staring at Jesse kneeling in front of his wife. Then his expression changed.
Larry: “Get up!”
Jesse slowly turned toward him.
Jesse: “Larry, listen—”
Larry: “I SAID GET UP!”
Bethany: “Larry, please. Let him explain.”
Larry looked at her as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Larry: “Explain what, Bethany? Why is this man on his knees proposing to my wife?”
Jesse: “I came here to talk to Bethany.”
Larry: “Talk to her? You call that talking?”
Jesse: “I know how it looks.”
Larry: “Then you should have thought about that before you walked into my house and pulled out a ring!”
Bethany hurried forward.
Bethany: “Jesse didn’t force anything on me. We were talking, and he told me how he felt.”
Larry turned toward her.
Larry: “And you let him?”
Bethany: “Don’t speak to me like I’m a child.”
Larry: “Excuse me?”
Bethany: “You heard me. You don’t get to ignore me, dismiss my feelings, and treat me like I’m a burden, then act shocked when somebody else listens to what I have to say.”
For a moment, Larry had no response. Then he stepped toward Jesse.
Larry: “You need to leave. Right now.”
Jesse stood up.
Jesse: “I’ll leave when Bethany and I finish this conversation.”
Larry gave a bitter laugh.
Larry: “You really think you have a place in this situation?”
Jesse: “I think Bethany has a right to be heard.”
Larry: “You’re going to stand in front of me and tell me what my wife deserves?”
Jesse: “I’m telling you what she told me. She’s hurting, and you need to stop pretending everything is fine.”
Larry suddenly grabbed Jesse by the front of his shirt and pulled him forward.
Bethany gasped.
Bethany: “LARRY! LET HIM GO!”
Jesse caught Larry’s wrist, trying to create some distance between them.
Jesse: “Let go of my shirt.”
Larry tightened his grip.
Larry: “You walk into my life, get on your knees in front of my wife, and think I’m just going to let you leave?”
Jesse: “This isn’t about you controlling me. This is about Bethany deciding what she wants.”
Larry shoved him backward. Jesse stumbled but managed to regain his balance.
Bethany rushed between them.
Bethany: “STOP IT! BOTH OF YOU!”
Larry looked down at her.
Larry: “Move, Bethany.”
Bethany: “No! You’re not going to turn this into a fight!”
Jesse straightened his shirt.
Jesse: “I’m not here to fight you, Larry.”
Larry: “Then get out!”
Jesse looked at Bethany.
Jesse: “I’ll go if that’s what you want.”
That question silenced the room. Larry turned toward his wife, waiting for her answer.
Bethany looked at Jesse, then at Larry. She could feel her heart pounding. For years, she had tried to keep everybody happy, even when doing so meant ignoring her own feelings.
But now, both men were standing in front of
