Wayne, Yaya, and Mike:
Love or a Show of Wealth?
“Take it, Yaya. From today onward, I don’t want you worrying about shopping, bills, or anything else. If you need something, buy it. If you want something, get it. Don’t ask me twice.”
Yaya stared at the card, then at Wayne.
“Wayne, I’m your ex-girlfriend, not someone who needs to depend on your money. Why are you suddenly trying to pay for everything?”
Wayne smiled confidently.
“Because I can. And because I want to.”
Across the table, Mike leaned back in his chair, watching the exchange with a curious smile.
Was Wayne trying to win Yaya’s heart again, or was he simply trying to prove to Mike that he could afford to buy anything he wanted?
Neither Yaya nor Mike knew that the little card sitting on the table would soon expose a truth Wayne had been hiding.
SCENE 1 — THE OFFER YAYA DIDN’T EXPECT
INT. UPSCALE RESTAURANT — AFTERNOON
Sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the elegant restaurant. Soft music played in the background as Wayne sat beside Yaya, looking unusually pleased with himself.
Mike sat across from them, enjoying his meal while occasionally glancing at the couple.
Yaya had expected a quiet lunch. Instead, Wayne had spent the afternoon talking about expensive shopping trips, luxury stores, and all the things he wanted to do for her.
Wayne reached into his wallet and pulled out his American Express card. He placed it directly in front of her.
WAYNE“Here. Keep it.”
YAYA“What’s this for?”
WAYNE“Shopping. Your personal expenses. Anything you need.”
YAYA“Wayne, I have my own money.”
WAYNE“I know that.”
YAYA“Then why are you giving me your card?”
WAYNE“Because I want you to enjoy your life without worrying about every little expense. You deserve nice things, Yaya.”
For a moment, Yaya didn’t respond. They had shared beautiful memories before their relationship fell apart, but their past had also taught her that expensive gifts could never replace honesty, trust, or emotional security.
She slowly pushed the card back toward him.
YAYA“I appreciate the thought, but I don’t want you thinking that money can solve everything between us.”
WAYNE“Who said anything about solving everything?”
YAYA“Then tell me what this is really about.”
Mike stopped eating. He could tell the conversation was becoming more serious than Wayne had expected.
WAYNE“It’s about taking care of someone who still matters to me.”
YAYA“Then start by understanding what I’m telling you.”
Her words left Wayne unusually quiet. For the first time that afternoon, he didn’t have an immediate answer.
SCENE 2 — WAYNE MAKES HIS POINT
INT. UPSCALE RESTAURANT — MOMENTS LATER
Wayne picked up the card and placed it beside Yaya’s handbag. He wasn’t ready to give up.
WAYNE“Listen to me. I’m not asking you to quit your job or stop making your own decisions. I just want to help.”
YAYA“And I keep telling you that I can take care of myself.”
WAYNE“You can. Nobody is questioning that. But if you’re with me, your expenses are my responsibility, too. That’s how I see it.”
Yaya’s eyes narrowed slightly.
YAYA“If I’m with you?”
Wayne immediately realized what he had said. Mike raised his eyebrows.
MIKE“That’s an interesting choice of words, Wayne.”
WAYNE“Don’t start.”
MIKE“I’m just listening.”
YAYA“Wayne, we haven’t even figured out what we are to each other. You’re talking about taking responsibility for my entire life.”
WAYNE“Maybe because I already know what I want.”
YAYA“And what exactly do you want?”
Wayne looked at her for a long moment. His confident expression softened.
WAYNE“I want another chance.”
The words hung between them. Mike slowly lowered his glass.
YAYA“Then why didn’t you say that first?”
WAYNE“Because I didn’t want to pressure you.”
YAYA“But giving me your credit card isn’t pressure?”
Wayne looked down at the card. For the first time, he seemed to understand how his generous offer might look from her side.
WAYNE“Maybe I’m not explaining myself properly.”
YAYA“Then explain yourself without talking about money.”
Wayne opened his mouth, but no words came out. Mike wondered whether his friend understood his own motives at all.
SCENE 3 — MIKE QUESTIONS WAYNE
INT. UPSCALE RESTAURANT — LATER
Yaya excused herself to take an important phone call outside. As soon as she left, Mike leaned forward.
MIKE“Can I ask you something?”
WAYNE“You’re going to ask whether I know what I’m doing.”
MIKE“No. I’m going to ask whether you know why you’re doing it.”
Mike gestured toward the American Express card.
MIKE“You gave your ex-girlfriend a credit card in the middle of lunch. You’ve spent the last twenty minutes trying to convince her that she should let you pay for everything. Are you trying to make her happy, or are you trying to make yourself look like the kind of man who can buy her anything?”
Wayne’s expression hardened.
WAYNE“You think I’m showing off?”
MIKE“I think you care about her. But I also think you like being the man who has all the answers.”
WAYNE“I work hard for my money. There’s nothing wrong with using it to take care of someone.”
MIKE“Absolutely. But there’s a difference between helping someone and making them feel like they owe you something.”
Wayne looked toward the restaurant entrance.
WAYNE“I would never make Yaya feel that way.”
MIKE“Then don’t. If you want Yaya back, show her that you’ve changed. Show her that you can listen when she says no. Show her that you can respect her independence.”
WAYNE“You make it sound so easy.”
MIKE“It’s not easy. That’s why you have to do it honestly.”
Wayne had imagined Yaya smiling, accepting the card, and realizing he was ready to give her the world. He hadn’t imagined her looking at him as though she needed to protect herself from his generosity.
WAYNE“What if she thinks I don’t care because I stop insisting?”
MIKE“Then tell her you care. You don’t need to turn your wallet into a speech.”
SCENE 4 — YAYA RETURNS WITH A QUESTION
INT. UPSCALE RESTAURANT — AFTERNOON
Yaya returned to the table and slipped her phone into her handbag. She immediately noticed the silence between the two men.
YAYA“Did I miss something?”
MIKE“Nothing important.”
Yaya sat down. The American Express card was still beside her handbag. She picked it up and held it out to Wayne.
YAYA“I need you to understand something. If I ever decide to give our relationship another chance, it won’t be because of expensive dinners, shopping trips, or a credit card.”
Wayne listened without interrupting.
YAYA“I need someone who respects my decisions. Someone who doesn’t assume that paying for everything gives him the right to make decisions for me.”
WAYNE“I would never take away your choices.”
YAYA“Then let me make this one.”
She placed the card in his hand. Wayne stared at it.
YAYA“I don’t want to accept something that makes me feel like I have to prove my feelings in return.”
WAYNE“You wouldn’t owe me anything.”
YAYA“Then you shouldn’t need to convince me so many times.”
Wayne slowly closed his fingers around the card.
WAYNE“Okay. I won’t force you to take it.”
Yaya looked surprised.
YAYA“Thank you.”
WAYNE“But can I still take you shopping sometime?”
Yaya laughed softly despite herself. Mike burst out laughing, and for a brief moment, the tension disappeared.
But beneath Yaya’s smile was a question she still couldn’t answer. Could she trust the man Wayne was becoming, or was he simply the same man wearing a more generous disguise?
SCENE 5 — A SHOPPING TRIP CHANGES EVERYTHING
EXT. UPSCALE SHOPPING DISTRICT — LATE AFTERNOON
After lunch, Wayne suggested walking through the shopping district. Yaya agreed, making it clear that she intended to browse rather than spend his money. Mike decided to join them.
The streets were busy, and luxury storefronts reflected the golden afternoon sunlight. Yaya stopped outside a designer boutique and admired a handbag displayed in the window.
WAYNE“You like that one?”
YAYA“It’s beautiful.”
WAYNE“Then let’s go inside.”
YAYA“Wayne, I said I’m just looking.”
WAYNE“And I’m just suggesting.”
She gave him a playful look.
YAYA“You’re impossible.”
WAYNE“Maybe. But at least I’m consistent.”
Inside the boutique, Yaya examined the handbag before checking its price. Her expression changed.
YAYA“Oh, no. Definitely not.”
She carefully returned it to its display.
WAYNE“That’s all?”
YAYA“Excuse me?”
WAYNE“I mean, if you like it, why walk away?”
YAYA“Because liking something doesn’t mean I need to buy it.”
Wayne studied her face, then nodded.
WAYNE“Fair enough.”
