The Slap That Changed Everything

THE SLAP THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

A CHARLATOO AND BETHANY STORY
Sometimes, the person who comes to save you is the same person who ends up breaking you. Charlatoo had arrived at Charlotte’s house with one mission: to take Bethany home. She believed that if she could convince Bethany to listen, they could leave the painful past behind. But neither of them knew that one argument would change their relationship forever.
SCENE 1 — CHARLOTTE’S HOUSE
The house was unusually quiet. Sunlight filtered through the windows as Charlatoo found Bethany sitting on the couch, looking exhausted and distant. Charlatoo approached carefully, hoping a gentle conversation would be enough to bring her home.
CHARLATOOBethany, come on. Get up. Let’s go home.
BETHANYI’m not going anywhere.
CHARLATOOPlease, Bethany. We’ve been through enough already. Whatever happened, we can deal with it later. Just come home with me.
BETHANYYou think it’s that simple?
CHARLATOONo. I know you’re hurt and angry. But staying here won’t fix anything.
BETHANYAnd going back with you will?
CHARLATOOAt least you won’t have to face everything alone.
For a moment, Bethany seemed to consider the offer. Charlatoo reached for her hand, but Bethany pulled away. The rejection hurt more than Charlatoo expected.
CHARLATOOI came all the way here because I care about you. I didn’t come to argue. I want you back home, where you belong.
BETHANYI don’t belong anywhere anymore.
CHARLATOODon’t say that. You have people who love you. You still have me.
BETHANYThen why does nobody understand what I’m going through?
Charlatoo fell silent. She could see the pain in Bethany’s eyes, but she did not know how to reach her. Every attempt to help seemed to make Bethany feel more trapped.
SCENE 2 — THE ARGUMENT BEGINS
BETHANYI’m not going!
CHARLATOOBethany, please. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.
BETHANYI’m not making anything difficult! You came here expecting me to follow you like nothing happened!
Charlatoo tightened her jaw but tried to remain calm. She reminded herself that Bethany was upset and that a little patience might prevent the situation from getting worse.
CHARLATOOAll right. You don’t have to explain everything now. Get your things, and we’ll talk on the way home.
BETHANYAre you even listening to me?
CHARLATOOYes, I am.
BETHANYNo, you’re not! You never listen! You arrive with your own ideas about what’s best for everyone, and you expect everybody to do exactly what you say!
CHARLATOOThat’s not fair, Bethany.
BETHANYI don’t care whether it’s fair!
The sharpness of Bethany’s voice made Charlatoo flinch. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then Bethany brought up the one person Charlatoo had hoped would remain outside their argument.
SCENE 3 — MATT’S NAME
BETHANYMaybe you should worry less about bringing me home and more about what Matt has done.
CHARLATOOWhat did you just say?
BETHANYYou heard me.
CHARLATOOBethany, don’t bring Matt into this.
BETHANYWhy not? Is Matt too important to be questioned?
Charlatoo took a slow breath. Matt’s name had immediately changed the conversation. She wanted to understand what Bethany meant, but the anger in Bethany’s voice made it difficult to ask calmly.
CHARLATOOWhatever problem you have with Matt, you can talk about it without turning this into another fight.
BETHANYOf course. That’s exactly what you would say. You always have an excuse.
CHARLATOOI’m not making excuses for anyone.
BETHANYReally? You look like someone who would defend Matt no matter what happened.
CHARLATOOYou don’t know everything about my family, Bethany.
BETHANYMaybe I know more than you think.
Charlatoo stared at her. There was something in Bethany’s tone that sounded less like an insult and more like a warning.
CHARLATOOWhat is that supposed to mean?
BETHANYNothing.
CHARLATOONo. You don’t get to say something like that and then pretend you said nothing. What do you know about Matt?
BETHANYWhy don’t you ask Matt yourself?
SCENE 4 — CHARLATOO LOSES HER PATIENCE
Charlatoo’s hands curled into fists at her sides. She had expected a difficult conversation, perhaps tears or angry words. She had not expected Bethany to challenge everything she believed about her family.
CHARLATOOBethany, I’m asking you nicely. Whatever you think you know, tell me without turning this into a personal attack.
BETHANYNicely? You want me to be nice while everyone else gets to do whatever they want?
CHARLATOOThat’s enough.
BETHANYNo, it isn’t!
Bethany stepped closer, her voice growing louder. Charlatoo could feel her patience slipping away, but she still tried to reason with her.
BETHANYYou came here pretending to care about me, but the moment I refuse to do what you want, you show your real face!
CHARLATOOI came here because I care about you. Don’t twist my intentions into something they’re not.
BETHANYThen stop acting like you own my life!
CHARLATOOI have never said that!
BETHANYYou don’t have to say it! You show it every time you walk into a room and expect everyone to listen to you!
Charlatoo looked away, desperately trying to control her breathing. She knew Bethany was hurting, but she was hurting too. Then Bethany mentioned Matt again.
BETHANYAnd Matt is no better! Maybe if Matt had learned how to treat people properly, you wouldn’t be standing here acting like you’re some kind of saint!
CHARLATOODon’t talk about Matt like that.
BETHANYWhy? What are you going to do about it?
CHARLATOOBethany, stop.
BETHANYMake me.
For one brief moment, Charlatoo said nothing. The room seemed to shrink around them. Every word struck another nerve, and the tension became unbearable.
CHARLATOOI am warning you for the last time. Do not insult Matt again.
BETHANYOr what? You’ll go running to Matt and complain that somebody finally dared to speak the truth?
CHARLATOOYou have no idea what you’re saying right now.
BETHANYOh, I know exactly what I’m saying! Matt is part of the problem, and you’re so busy defending Matt that you can’t see what’s happening around you!
Charlatoo’s expression changed. For a second, she looked less angry than wounded. She had come to bring Bethany home, believing they could work through their problems together. Now it seemed that Bethany had no intention of listening.
CHARLATOOI came here because I thought we could put this behind us and figure things out together. I did not come here to listen to you attack my family.
BETHANYThen leave.
CHARLATOOWhat?
BETHANYYou heard me. If you can’t handle the truth, leave me alone.
CHARLATOOI’m not leaving you here like this.
BETHANYYou don’t get to decide that!
CHARLATOOI am trying to help you!
BETHANYI DON’T WANT YOUR HELP!
SCENE 5 — THE SLAP
The shout echoed through the room. Bethany moved closer, her face flushed with anger. Charlatoo’s eyes filled with hurt and fury. She had pleaded, reasoned, and swallowed her anger because she believed bringing Bethany home mattered more than winning an argument.
BETHANYI don’t want your influence following me everywhere I go! You can keep your opinions, your judgments, and your perfect little family!
CHARLATOOStop attacking my family!
BETHANYMake me!
The challenge was immediate. Before Charlatoo could think through what she was doing, her anger took control. She raised her hand and slapped Bethany across the face. The sound cracked through the room. Bethany’s head turned sharply to one side.
Silence followed. Charlatoo froze. Her hand slowly lowered as the anger disappeared from her face, replaced by shock at her own actions. She had come to bring Bethany home. Instead, she had just struck her.
CHARLATOOBethany…
Bethany stood motionless, one hand slowly rising to her cheek. For several seconds, she did not cry or speak. She simply stared at Charlatoo as if she no longer recognized the person standing in front of her.
CHARLATOOI didn’t mean to do that.
BETHANYYou hit me.
CHARLATOOI lost control. I’m sorry.
BETHANYYou came here telling me you cared about me. And this is what your care looks like?
Charlatoo tried to step forward, but Bethany immediately moved away. The small movement hurt more than any insult she had heard that afternoon. She wanted to explain herself, to take back the slap, but she knew there was no explanation that could undo what she had done.
CHARLATOOBethany, please. I know I was wrong. I should never have touched you.
BETHANYDon’t come near me.
CHARLATOOAll right. I won’t.
SCENE 6 — THE TRUTH COMES OUT
Bethany’s eyes finally filled with tears. She wiped them away angrily, refusing to let Charlatoo see how deeply the moment had affected her.
BETHANYYou know what hurts the most? I thought you were different.
CHARLATOOI am sorry. I know that doesn’t fix anything.
BETHANYNo, it doesn’t. You wanted me to trust you, but the moment I said something you didn’t like, you hit me.
CHARLATOOYou’re right. I had no right to do that.
For the first time since the argument began, Charlatoo stopped trying to defend herself. She could have blamed the insults, the anger, or the painful things Bethany had said about Matt. But none of those things justified what she had done.
BETHANYAnd you still expect me to come home with you?
CHARLATOONo. I can’t demand that from you. I wanted you to come home because I was worried, but I understand that you don’t feel safe with me right now.
BETHANYThen why did you come here?
CHARLATOOBecause I was afraid of losing you. And I made everything worse.
Bet
