She had been looking forward to attending the party all week, but there was one problem she didn’t want to deal with: her young son, Kai.
Kai sat quietly on the couch, watching cartoons while Shayla searched for her handbag. She glanced at him and smiled.
SHAYLA: Kai, Mommy is going out for a little while. You stay here and watch your cartoons, okay?
Kai looked up at her with a confused expression.
KAI: Mommy, where are you going? Can I come with you?
Shayla sighed and walked over to him.

She noticed Kai’s favorite toy lying on the floor. His cartoon was still playing on the television, but her little boy was nowhere to be found.
