The Bag That Slipped

1. A Heavy Silence

The living room was unusually quiet.

Larry sat on the edge of the armchair, scrolling through his phone.

Brooke paced near the coffee table, rubbing her palms together.

Late afternoon light stretched long shadows across the room.

Something felt off—too quiet, too tense.

2. The Question That Slipped

Brooke: “So… you know how that bag was moved last night?”

Larry’s thumb froze on his screen.

Larry: “What bag?”

Brooke blinked, her heart skipping.

Brooke: “Oh—uh—I thought you knew.”

3. Suspicion Grows

Larry straightened, his expression sharpening.

Larry: “Brooke, I don’t like games.”

Larry: “What bag are you talking about?”

Brooke: “The one near the back storage.”

Brooke: “The one people have been whispering about.”

Larry stood up, the chair scraping loudly behind him.

4. Fear in Plain Sight

Larry: “Whispering?”

Larry: “Who’s been whispering?”

Brooke’s face drained of color.

Brooke: “I didn’t mean it like that.”

Larry: “Things don’t slip unless there’s something to hide.”

Brooke: “Please… let it go.”

5. The Secret Nears the Surface

That single word—please—changed everything.

Larry: “You don’t say that unless you’re scared.”

Brooke: “I didn’t want you involved.”

Larry: “Involved in what?”

Brooke: “It’s not my secret.”

Larry: “But you said it.”

Footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Larry: “Who else knows?”

Brooke stayed silent.

The secret hovered in the air, dangerously close to being spoken.
