Quiet Observations
A soft hum of distant traffic filters through the window. BROOKE stands near the glass, arms folded. SHARRA sits on the couch, studying her carefully.
BROOKE: “The HOA still doesn’t treat Bethany right.”
SHARRA: “What do you mean?”
Brooke glances toward the hallway before answering.
BROOKE: “They ignore her emails. Fine her for things they let others slide. Last week they warned her about her lawn… when it looked just like everyone else’s.”
Something Isn’t the Same
SHARRA: “That’s unfair. Did she say something?”
BROOKE: “No. That’s the thing. She didn’t say a word. She just… accepted it.”
A beat of silence settles.
SHARRA: “That’s not like her.”
BROOKE: “I know.”
Soft footsteps echo faintly from the hallway — unnoticed.
BROOKE: “Ever since that incident with Lynette… everything changed.”
Unheard
SHARRA: “You think that’s why?”
BROOKE: “I do. She used to fight back. Stand her ground. Now she just stays quiet.”
In the hallway, unseen — BETHANY stands frozen. Her hand tightens around her bag strap.
BROOKE: “She went to the last HOA meeting. They talked over her the entire time. Didn’t let her finish one sentence.”
A heavy silence fills the room.
BROOKE: “And she just sat there. Quiet.”
The Truth in the Hallway
Bethany’s eyes glisten. She hadn’t meant for anyone to know.
SHARRA: “Why didn’t she tell us?”
BROOKE: “Because she doesn’t want to seem weak.”
SHARRA: “She’s not weak.”
BROOKE: “I know. But I don’t think she believes it anymore.”
A faint creak sounds from the hallway floor.
No More Whispering
BROOKE: “Hello?”
Bethany steps into the doorway. Her eyes are red, but steady.
BETHANY: “You don’t have to whisper about me.”
BROOKE: “We’re not judging you.”
BETHANY: “I heard enough.”
The room feels smaller now.
BETHANY: “The HOA hasn’t been kind. But I’m tired of fighting every battle.”
SHARRA: “You don’t have to fight alone.”
Together
BETHANY: “When Lynette confronted me… I realized pushing back sometimes makes things uglier.”
BROOKE: “Not pushing back makes you disappear.”
That lands deeply.
BETHANY: “You really noticed I changed?”
BROOKE: “We both did.”
SHARRA: “You’ve been quieter. Careful.”
BROOKE: “We see you.”
A shift fills the room — tension melting into strength.
SHARRA: “Next HOA meeting — we go together.”
BETHANY: “Together.”
Three women. No whispers. No hiding. And at the next meeting… silence would no longer belong to Bethany.
