Wayne’s Secret Call

WAYNE’S SECRET CALL

A Secret • A Phone Call • A Truth
“WAYNE! WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?!” Lauren’s angry voice suddenly filled the room.
Wayne froze. For a second, he didn’t know what to say. His phone was still in his hand, the call connected, and the voice on the other end had gone completely silent.
Wayne quickly lowered the phone. “Lauren… calm down.”
But Lauren wasn’t calming down.
She had been watching him for the last few minutes. Wayne had been standing near the window, speaking quietly and turning his back whenever she came closer. At first, she thought he was just taking a normal call.
Then she noticed something strange.
Every time Lauren looked at him, Wayne moved the phone away from her.
“Why are you hiding your phone from me?” Lauren asked.
“I’m not hiding anything.”
“Really?” Lauren stepped closer. “Then why did you suddenly turn your back when I came into the room?”
Wayne didn’t answer.
“Who was that?”
“Nobody.”
“Nobody?” Lauren repeated. “You were whispering to somebody for five minutes.”
Wayne finally ended the call and slipped the phone into his pocket.
Lauren immediately noticed.
“Why did you put it in your pocket?”
“Because the conversation is over.”
Lauren gave him a suspicious look.
“No… you put it away because you don’t want me to see who you were talking to.”
Wayne sighed. “You’re overthinking this.”
“Am I?”
Lauren took another step toward him.
“Then show me your phone.”
Wayne’s expression changed. Just for a moment. But Lauren noticed.
“See? You’re hiding something.”
Wayne shook his head. “You’re making this into something it isn’t.”
“Then prove it.”
Wayne stayed silent.
Lauren crossed her arms.
“Is it Tamara?”
Wayne suddenly looked at her.
Lauren’s eyes narrowed. That reaction was enough to make her heart drop.
“You know what?” she whispered. “You didn’t even deny it.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“Exactly.”
Wayne looked toward the door, clearly uncomfortable.
“Why would you be secretly calling Tamara?”
Wayne finally pulled his phone out again.
Lauren immediately looked at it. But before she could see the screen, Wayne turned it away.
“Wayne!”
He quickly locked the phone.
Lauren stared at him.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Wayne said quietly, “Lauren, there are things you don’t understand.”
“What things?”
Wayne didn’t answer.
“Tell me the truth,” she said. “Was that Tamara?”
Again, silence.
Lauren slowly shook her head.
“I knew it…”
Wayne looked at her.
But before Lauren could say anything else, Wayne’s phone suddenly vibrated in his hand.
Both of them looked down.

Another call.
Wayne’s face went completely serious.
Lauren noticed.
“Answer it.”
Wayne didn’t move.
“Answer it, Wayne.”
The phone kept ringing.
Lauren stepped closer.
Wayne finally looked at the screen.
Then his expression changed in a way Lauren had never seen before.
She tried to look.
Wayne immediately turned the phone away.
“Who is calling you now?”
Wayne said nothing.
The phone stopped ringing.
For a moment, everything was silent.
Then a new message appeared on Wayne’s locked screen.
Lauren caught only a glimpse of it.
Her eyes widened.
“Wayne…”
He quickly turned the phone over.
“What did that message say?”
Wayne stared at her.
And for the first time, he looked genuinely scared.
Lauren slowly stepped back.

“Was it Tamara?”
Wayne still didn’t answer.
Then the phone vibrated one more time.
Wayne looked at the screen.
Lauren watched his face.
And whatever he saw made him immediately walk toward the door.
Lauren called after him—

“WAYNE… WHERE ARE YOU GOING?”
Wayne stopped.
He slowly turned around.
But before he could answer, his phone rang again.
The room went completely silent.
Lauren stared at him.
Wayne stared at the phone.
Neither of them moved.
Then, from the other side of the room, Lauren heard the phone speaker connect.
A woman’s voice whispered one sentence.
Lauren’s eyes widened.

Wayne immediately reached for the phone.

But Lauren stopped him.

“Wait…”
She stared at him.

“If it’s really Tamara… why are you so scared?”
Wayne said nothing.
The phone remained between them, still connected.
Then the woman on the other end spoke again.

This time, Lauren heard her clearly.
“Wayne… she still doesn’t know the truth.”
Lauren looked at Wayne.
Wayne looked back at her.
Neither of them spoke.
Then the call suddenly ended.
Lauren whispered, “What truth?”
Wayne slowly put the phone in his pocket.
And just before he walked away, he said something that made Lauren even more suspicious.
“You really don’t want to know.”
Lauren grabbed him.

“Is Tamara the person you were hiding from me?”
Wayne opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Lauren’s phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
“What does it say?”
Lauren raised her eyes.

“I think you should read it.”
Wayne saw the message.
He went still.
CUT.
