The Tension Builds

The hotel room was quiet, almost too quiet, except for the soft hum of the air conditioner and the occasional sighs of frustration. Bethany paced back and forth, glancing nervously at the clock. Brooke sat on the edge of the bed, trying to calm her, though her own worry was clear.

BETHANY
Frustrated
“Brooke… something’s not right. Why hasn’t Larry called us yet? He promised he’d handle everything.”

BROOKE
Trying to soothe her
“He’ll call, Beth… just relax. Let’s not stress before we have to.”

Bethany’s hands trembled slightly as she grabbed her phone again, scrolling through messages. Nothing. No calls, no updates. Her gut twisted, a sense of unease creeping in.

Meanwhile, at a completely different part of town, Larry had already arrived at the hospital with Jaden and Lynette, escorting little Kaylee for her checkup. The hallways were busy with the steady flow of patients and nurses, the sterile smell of disinfectant filling the air. Larry had a serious look on his face, trying to stay composed, but his mind kept drifting to Bethany and Brooke.

BETHANY
Suddenly snapping
“Brooke! I’m not staying here doing nothing while they’re at the hospital. We have to go!”

Brooke sighed, knowing there was no reasoning with Bethany once she got like this.

BROOKE
Sighing, trying to keep calm
“Fine… let’s go. But we don’t even know which hospital they’re at!”

That didn’t matter to Bethany. She threw on her jacket, grabbed her bag, and dragged Brooke down to the waiting Uber. The driver gave them a curious look as they hopped in, both of them tense and anxious.

BETHANY
Demanding
“Take us to the hospital, now! And hurry!”

The ride was chaotic. Bethany’s hands gripped the edge of her seat, her eyes darting out the window every few seconds, while Brooke tried to calm her down.

BROOKE
Worried
“Beth… maybe we should call Larry first?”

BETHANY
Snapping
“No! He should’ve told us where they were! This is his fault!”

Hours seemed to pass as they drove around, going in circles, stopping to ask for directions, and getting wrong addresses. Every wrong turn only fueled Bethany’s frustration and anger. She slammed the window in exasperation, her face twisted in fury.

Finally, exhausted and more confused than ever, they found themselves back near their hotel. Bethany buried her face in her hands, the tension in her body finally giving way to sheer frustration.

BETHANY
Frustrated, defeated
“I can’t believe this! We’re literally back where we started, and Larry… he didn’t even think to tell us anything!”

BROOKE
Trying to be the voice of reason
“Let’s just go back inside and wait. Maybe he’ll call soon.”

Bethany sank into the armchair by the window, her fingers tapping nervously on the armrest. Her mind raced with thoughts of Larry, Jaden, Lynette, and Kaylee. How dare he go without telling her? Her chest tightened, and a storm of emotions brewed inside her—anger, betrayal, and worry all tangled together.

The minutes dragged on. Bethany’s eyes stayed glued to the entrance, waiting for any sign of Larry. Every shadow, every sound made her jump. She clenched her fists, her jaw tight, her breathing uneven.

BETHANY
Angrily
“Where is he? Why didn’t he think we should come with him?”

Brooke sat beside her, silent now, watching her friend’s storm unfold. She had learned long ago that Bethany needed to work through her emotions before she could think clearly.

Outside, the city moved on, unaware of the small but intense drama unfolding in that hotel room. Bethany’s thoughts flickered between what could be happening at the hospital and what she imagined Larry was thinking. Her frustration was palpable, her eyes occasionally glancing at her phone for a call that wasn’t coming.

BETHANY
Determined, quietly seething
“He better not even think about walking in without explaining everything. I’m not letting him get away with this.”

Brooke gave a small nod, understanding the storm was far from over. The room was tense, a mix of anticipation and anger hanging in the air. Bethany’s stare out the window remained fixed, ready for Larry’s arrival, and ready for the drama that was about to unfold the moment he stepped through the door.

For Bethany, patience was gone. Anger, worry, and a burning need to confront Larry consumed her. She sat, fists clenched, mind racing, waiting for the moment she would finally have answers… and make him realize that leaving them in the dark was not something she would forgive easily.
