The Birthday Party Confrontation

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY CONFRONTATION

A Birthday Celebration Turns Into An Unexpected Confrontation
Scene 01
INT. DAVE’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – AFTERNOON

The house is quiet as DAVE stands near the window, checking his phone.

His phone suddenly rings. He looks at the screen.

It’s WAYNE.

DAVE Hey, Wayne. What’s going on?

Wayne sounds frustrated on the other end.

WAYNE Dave, I need to ask you something. You personally invited me to your birthday party, but Amber called me and said there was no need for me to come.

Dave’s expression changes. He looks toward the hallway, where AMBER is getting ready.

DAVE Wait, what?
WAYNE That’s what she told me. She said I didn’t need to come to your birthday party.

Dave shakes his head, clearly uncomfortable.

DAVE Wayne, I’m sorry about what Amber said. I personally invited you, and I meant it.
DAVE You have to come to the party. Don’t let that stop you.
WAYNE Are you sure?
DAVE Absolutely. It’s my birthday, and I want you there.
WAYNE All right, Dave. I’ll come.
DAVE Good. I’ll see you there.

They hang up. Dave lowers his phone and stares toward the hallway.

DAVE Amber…

Before he can say anything else, Amber walks into the room. She’s dressed for the birthday party and carries her purse.

AMBER Are you ready?
DAVE Yeah. But we need to talk about Wayne.
AMBER What about him?
DAVE He just called me.
AMBER Why?
DAVE He told me what you said to him.
AMBER I told him the truth. He didn’t need to come.
DAVE Amber, I invited him. It’s my birthday party.
AMBER And I told you I didn’t want him there.
DAVE You don’t get to decide who I invite to my own birthday party.

Amber looks away, irritated.

AMBER Whatever. Let’s just go.

Dave grabs his jacket. Neither of them says another word.

EXT. DAVE’S HOUSE – LATE AFTERNOON

Dave and Amber walk toward their car. The tension between them is obvious.

Dave opens the driver’s door. Amber gets into the passenger seat.

The car pulls away.

Scene 03
INT. WAYNE AND LAUREN’S CAR – EVENING

WAYNE drives while LAUREN sits beside him. Lauren notices that Wayne seems distracted.

LAUREN You okay?
WAYNE Yeah. It’s just Dave’s birthday.
LAUREN Then why do you look so serious?
WAYNE Amber called me earlier and told me there was no reason for me to come.
LAUREN Seriously?
WAYNE Yeah.
LAUREN But Dave invited you.
WAYNE Exactly. That’s why I called him.
LAUREN And he still wants you there.
WAYNE Yeah. So I’m going.
LAUREN Then don’t let anybody ruin Dave’s birthday.
WAYNE That’s the plan.
Scene 04
EXT. PARTY VENUE – EVENING

Cars fill the parking area. Music can be heard from inside.

Guests arrive dressed for the celebration.

Dave and Amber step out of their car.

For a moment, everything seems normal.

Then Amber suddenly stops. Her eyes widen.

Across the parking area, WAYNE and LAUREN are walking toward the entrance.

Amber’s face immediately changes. She looks furious.

AMBER I can’t believe he actually came.
DAVE I told him to come.
AMBER You told him to come after I specifically told him not to?
DAVE Amber, this is my birthday party.
AMBER I don’t care!

People nearby begin noticing the tension.

DAVE Can we please not do this here?
AMBER No. I’m leaving.
DAVE What?
AMBER I told you not to invite Wayne!
DAVE I invited him because he’s my friend.
AMBER And I told him not to come!
DAVE That’s exactly the problem.
AMBER What is that supposed to mean?
DAVE It means you shouldn’t have called him and told him he wasn’t welcome. If I invited someone, you should respect that.
AMBER So you’re taking his side now?
DAVE This isn’t about taking sides. It’s about respecting me on my birthday.

Amber clenches her purse. Wayne and Lauren are now close enough to see that something is happening.

LAUREN Should we go inside?
WAYNE I think something’s wrong.
Scene 05
EXT. PARTY VENUE – CONTINUOUS
AMBER I’m leaving.
DAVE Amber, please don’t walk away.
AMBER Why shouldn’t I? You already made your decision.
DAVE My decision was to invite my friend to my
