A Family’s Night

Scene 1 — The Living Room, Evening

The house is quiet. Brooke sits on the couch, looking nervous. Larry stands across from her, his expression serious.

Larry

“Brooke, I need you to answer me honestly. Have you and Isaiah ever had a physical relationship?”

Brooke immediately looks down.

Brooke

“No, Dad. Nothing happened between us.”

Larry studies her face. He doesn’t look convinced.

Larry

“Brooke, look at me. I’m giving you one chance to tell me the truth. Are you absolutely sure?”

Brooke

“Yes, Dad. I’m telling you the truth.”

Larry

“Okay. Then we’re going to the doctor.”

Brooke’s eyes widen. She asks why. Larry says he needs to know what’s really going on. Brooke asks if he doesn’t trust her. His expression softens for a moment.

Larry

“It’s not that I want to hurt you. I’m worried about you.”

Brooke insists nothing happened. Larry grabs his keys and says the doctor will give them answers. Brooke slowly stands and follows him toward the door.

Scene 2 — The Car, Later

Larry drives in silence. Brooke stares out the window.

Brooke

“Dad… please don’t be angry with me.”

Larry looks confused and asks why she’d say that. She doesn’t answer. The car falls silent again. Larry notices how nervous she looks.

Larry

“Whatever happens, we’re going to deal with it together.”

Brooke nods quietly.

Scene 3 — Doctor’s Office, Night

Larry and Brooke sit in the waiting room. Brooke nervously taps her fingers against her leg. Larry watches her.

Larry

“You okay?”

Brooke

“I’m just nervous.”

Larry

“I know.”

A nurse calls Brooke’s name. She stands, and Larry follows her inside.

Scene 4 — Exam Room

The doctor speaks calmly with Brooke and Larry, explaining that they’ll run the appropriate tests and discuss results afterward. Larry tells Brooke to just tell them the truth once the results are in. The test is completed. The room feels painfully quiet as they wait. Brooke stares at the floor; Larry keeps checking the clock. Finally the doctor returns, expression serious.

Doctor

“Larry, Brooke… the pregnancy test came back positive.”

Silence. Brooke freezes. Larry slowly looks at the doctor.

Larry

“What?”

The doctor repeats the result calmly. Larry stares at Brooke. Her eyes fill with tears.

Brooke

“Dad…”

Larry stands, his face filled with shock and anger.

Larry

“You told me nothing happened!”

Brooke

“I was scared!”

Larry

“Scared? Brooke, I asked you directly!”

Brooke

“I didn’t know what to do!”

The doctor raises a hand, reminding Larry that Brooke needs support and proper medical care right now. Larry takes a deep breath — his anger still there, but he sees how frightened she is. He sits back down.

Larry

“Okay… but I need answers.”

Brooke wipes her tears and apologizes. Larry looks at her.

Larry

“I’m disappointed that you didn’t feel like you could tell me.”

Brooke

“I thought you would hate me.”

Larry

“I could never hate you. I’m angry about the situation. I’m angry that you kept this from me. But you’re still my daughter.”

Brooke begins crying harder. Larry reaches for her hand.

Larry

“We’re going to figure this out.”

Scene 5 — Hospital Hallway, Moments Later

Larry stops near the hallway window, trying to control his emotions. Brooke stands several feet away.

Brooke

“Dad? Are you going to tell Mom?”

Larry pauses.

Larry

“She deserves to know.”

Brooke looks terrified and begs him not to tell her yet. Larry walks toward her.

Larry

“Brooke, this isn’t something we can hide. We need to tell her together.”

Brooke nods reluctantly.

Scene 6 — The Parking Lot, Night

Larry stops before opening the car door.

Larry

“There’s something else. I’m going to talk to Isaiah.”

Brooke immediately grows nervous and asks him not to go after him. Larry shakes his head.

Larry

“I’m not going there to start a fight. I need to hear the truth from him.”

Brooke asks what if he doesn’t care. Larry looks directly at her.

Larry

“Then we’ll know exactly what kind of person he is.”

Brooke wipes her eyes, saying she doesn’t want her life to fall apart. Larry puts a hand on her shoulder.

Larry

“Your life isn’t over. This is a serious situation, but you’re not facing it alone.”

Brooke nods.

Scene 7 — The House, Later That Night

Larry and Brooke walk through the front door. Bethany immediately notices their expressions and asks what happened. Larry says they need to talk. Bethany looks from Larry to Brooke, confused. Brooke’s eyes fill with tears again. Larry knows there’s no easy way to say it.

Larry

“We went to the doctor tonight.”

Bethany’s face grows concerned, asking if Brooke is okay. Larry looks at Brooke, who slowly nods.

Larry

“She’s going to need us now more than ever.”

Bethany looks confused, asking what he means. Larry finally says it.

Larry

“Brooke’s pregnancy test came back positive.”

Bethany freezes, her hand moving to her mouth. Brooke begins crying and apologizes. Bethany rushes to her and embraces her. Larry watches them — his anger hasn’t disappeared, but neither has his love for his daughter.

Larry

“We’re going to handle this as a family.”

Bethany asks about Isaiah. Larry’s expression turns serious.

Larry

“That’s the conversation we’re having next.”

He looks toward Brooke.

Larry

“But whatever happens from here, nobody is going to abandon her.”

Brooke looks at her parents through tears — for the first time that night, she feels less alone. Larry looks toward the door, knowing the next conversation could change everything.

Larry

“I’m going to get the truth from Isaiah.”

The room falls silent.
