The Unexpected Discovery

Scene 01 — Living Room — Evening
The room is calm. Iman sits beside Shayla, listening as she talks.
He seems distracted, occasionally glancing toward the hallway.
Then—the front door opens.
LAUREN
Hey, everybody.
SHAYLA
Hey, Lauren.
Iman looks up. His expression changes immediately.
A brief smile crosses his face before he quickly tries to hide it.
SHAYLA
What’s that smile about?
IMAN
Nothing.
Lauren looks toward the hallway.
LAUREN
Is Wayne here?
SHAYLA
He’s in the other room. He’ll be back soon.
Scene 02 — The Departure
Wayne enters while checking his phone.
WAYNE
I need to handle something real quick.
He looks toward Shayla.
WAYNE
You coming with me?
SHAYLA
Yeah.
Shayla turns toward Iman.
SHAYLA
We’ll be back.
IMAN
Alright.
Wayne and Shayla leave. The front door closes.
Silence fills the room.
LAUREN
I should probably go too.
IMAN
You wanted to talk to Wayne. You can wait.
LAUREN
Iman, Wayne could come back any minute.
IMAN
We’re just talking.
Scene 03 — Private Room
Iman leads Lauren toward a quieter room.
Lauren remains uncertain as she follows.
LAUREN
This isn’t a good idea.
IMAN
Nobody is doing anything wrong.
LAUREN
Wayne trusts everybody in this house. I don’t want him walking in
and misunderstanding something.
IMAN
Then let’s just talk.
A tense silence follows.
IMAN
You’ve been acting different lately.
LAUREN
So have you.
IMAN
Maybe there’s a reason.
LAUREN
What reason?
Before Iman can answer, footsteps echo from outside.
Lauren immediately looks toward the door.
LAUREN
I told you Wayne might come back.
The atmosphere suddenly changes. Someone is back.
Scene 04 — The Discovery
Wayne’s voice echoes through the house.
WAYNE
Shayla!
Iman and Lauren exchange a worried look.
They step into the hallway.
Wayne and Shayla appear at the end of the hallway.
They stop immediately.
Wayne looks at Iman.
Then Lauren.
Then the room behind them.
SHAYLA
What are you two doing in here?
IMAN
We were talking.
WAYNE
Talking? In a private room?
Iman doesn’t answer.
LAUREN
Nothing happened.
WAYNE
I didn’t ask what happened.
The hallway becomes completely silent.
SHAYLA
Why didn’t you just talk to her out there?
IMAN
I thought it would be better to have some privacy.
WAYNE
Privacy?
Wayne looks from Iman to Lauren.
Scene 05 — The Confrontation
Everyone gathers in the living room.
Nobody speaks.
WAYNE
I want the truth.
Lauren looks at Iman.
Iman looks back at Lauren.
SHAYLA
There’s clearly something nobody is telling us.
LAUREN
It’s complicated.
SHAYLA
Then explain it.
Lauren takes a deep breath.
LAUREN
I came here to talk to Wayne. Things got confusing.
WAYNE
Confusing how?
Lauren remains silent.
IMAN
That’s enough.
WAYNE
No. It’s not.
Shayla watches everyone carefully.
Her expression shows that she knows there is more to the story.
WAYNE
Whatever happened in that room, we’re going to figure it out tonight.
Lauren looks nervous.
Iman remains silent.
Shayla shakes her head in disbelief.
